The woofers needed to be replaced in both speakers. Maybe the original woofers were not made to last as long as I thought. So, I managed to find the right size replacements on eBay: Concept CFA 600. That's why I said, "They've been Conceptized." :-) They would normally be used in car stereos. But they're the right size to fit in hole for the woofer and they sound as good as the originals.
What I used to play a CD was a Panasonic SL-SX420. My 2nd portable as well as my 1st that plays MP3 files.
