1981 Masters of the Universe Commercial with first animated appearance of He-Man and Skeletor
Did you know the very first animated appearance of He-Man and Skeletor wasn’t in the Filmation series… it was in a toy commercial?
In 1981 to introduce the line, Mattel created this commercial to promote the line. Later on, the animation was removed and just the father and the kids were shown playing.
Trivia:
The mini animated commercial predated Filmation’s 1983 series by about two years but it was produced by Filmation.
In this first animated appearance, He-Man was just He-Man — the secret identity concept came later for the TV show.
Skeletor looks different to be closer to the original toy sculpt, more menacing and less expressive than the Filmation version.
The commercial mixed quick animation scenes with kids playing with the figures, helping launch one of the biggest toy franchises of the 80s.
The Most Powerful Man in the Universe! was also used in this very first animated promo.
