What Matters to Me and Why Alumni Series - Laura Yeager 86 UCI Media 2023-02-06 | Major General Yeager recently retired as the Commander of the 40th Infantry Division and the California Army National Guard. She currently serves as a member of the UCI Alumni Association Board of Directors. This informal, conversational speaker series explores how student experiences have profoundly impacted the career paths and life journeys of some of UCI’s many distinguished alumni. Major General Yeager began service in 1986 in the Army after commissioning as a Second Lieutenant from the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at CSU Long Beach and following graduation from UC Irvine having earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She has held staff and leadership positions of increasing responsibility as both a medical service corps and aviation officer at multiple duty locations across the country. She is qualified as a helicopter pilot and deployed to Iraq in 2011 as the Deputy Commander for the 40th Combat Aviation Brigade. Major General Yeager holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Chapman University College and a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. In her assignment as the Commander of the 40th Infantry Division and the California Army National Guard, she commanded over 13,000 Soldiers, managed budgets in excess of $100 million, the hundreds of vehicles and aircraft throughout the state of California to remain prepared to support state emergencies and federal deployments.

Galileo initiated electromagnetic astronomy 400 years ago by pointing a telescope at the sky and discovering the moons of Jupiter. LIGO recently initiated gravitational astronomy by observing gravitational waves from colliding black holes. Thorne will describe this discovery, the 50 year effort that led to it, and the rich explorations that lie ahead.Kip Thorne was a co-winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for the detection of gravitational waves. The discovery, part of the LIGO experiment, validated Albert Einstein’s longstanding prediction that during cataclysmic events the fabric of spacetime can be stretched, sending gravitational tremors across the universe. Thorne is a graduate of Caltech and Princeton University. His research has focused on Einstein’s general theory of relativity and on astrophysics, and he co-founded the LIGO Project. Among his many distinctions, Thorne has been awarded the Albert Einstein Medal, the UNESCO Niels Bohr Gold Medal, the Common Wealth Award for Science, and was named California Scientists of the Year. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. In addition to his renowned scientific research in theoretical physics, he is involved in writing and movie production. Most notably, he worked on Christopher Nolan’s film Interstellar.The Reines Lecture Series honors Frederick Reines, UCI’s Founding Dean of Physical Sciences and co-recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize for discovering the neutrino.

What Matters to Me and Why - Interview with Dr. Albert Chang UCI Media 2022-09-28 | Albert Chang MD MPH has been a pediatrician and patient advocate in Orange County for nearly 20 years, and prior to UCI served as the Regional Medical Director of AltaMed Health Services Corporation of community clinics in Orange County. He obtained his MD/MPH combined degree from the Boston University School of Medicine, trained in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), and completed a Preventive Medicine Residency at UCLA.After residency, he worked with the Orange County Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, where he developed a Childhood Injury Prevention Training Program for the pediatric residents at both CHOC and UC Irvine, and integrated a similar safety program into physician offices. Dr. Chang has been closely involved with the Orange County Children and Families Commission (First-5) programs, including an Emmy-nominated PBS parenting program called “Help Me Grow”, where they filmed educational vignettes directed to the parents of young children. Dr. Chang has worked as a Pediatric Consultant for the Orange County Health Care Agency, providing medical evaluation and direction for children with special needs through the California Children's Services program. This work was done on-site at school-based Medical Therapy Units, and this is where he became closely involved with not only the physical and occupational therapy services but also the educational and long term life-style goals for these very special children and their familiesAs the Regional Medical Director at AltaMed, Dr. Chang was responsible for providing the clinical oversight for 7 primary care clinics in Orange County, managing the Medical Directors at each site, advocating for the needs of over 60 medical providers, and supporting the delivery of care to over 65,000 patient lives. As an active member of the Medical Leadership Council, and serving as the chair for many committees and project teams, he has worked very closely with the Clinical Operations, Quality Department, Medical Management, Health Education and Marketing teams, to ensure the success of many programs and projects within the Orange County clinics.Dr. Chang took these opportunities to better develop his business acumen and understanding of how to develop and implement policies, oversee the training and continuing education of staff, enforce best practices and procedures, and ensure all operations are compliant with state, local and federal regulations. He truly enjoys building successful partnerships with governmental agencies that have supported the clinics including the Orange County Health Care Agency and CalOptima, as well as local community organizations such as the Coalition of Orange County Community Health Centers, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Orange County Medical Association. This shared work has allowed for the leveraging of support from local Hospitals and ER’s, Family Resource Centers, School Districts, and other groups to reach out and provide service to as many members of the community as possible.Being with UC Irvine for over 3 years now, Dr. Chang strives to maintain health in student and staff populations, prevent illness and injury, and promote healthy living for the people of our community.
What Matters to Me and Why - Interview with Michael R. Arias UCI Media 2022-09-28 | Michael R. Arias served as a UCI staff member for nearly 40 years. He joined UCI in 1979, starting as support staff for the School of Physical Sciences. Two years later, he became director of the academic budget until 1990, when he was named assistant dean of the School of Social Sciences. In 1998, he was recruited to be associate executive vice chancellor and chief of staff. Mike has played many critical roles in the university, where senior leadership relied greatly on his deep knowledge and insightful advice. As one of Chancellor Gillman’s principal advisers from 2014 until his retirement in 2018, Mike played a major role in every significant initiative in recent years, including the development of the UCI strategic plan, the establishment of the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, the creation of the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, the gift of the Buck Collection of California art, the construction of two student housing complexes and the Anteater Learning Pavilion, and the planning for the Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Building. He also served on the UCI Foundation board of trustees and the Chief Executive Roundtable, demonstrating admirable skill in connecting with our external partners. His decades of contributions have been enormously valuable and will benefit UCI for generations to come. A proud alumnus, earning his bachelor’s degree in social sciences magna cum laude, Mike is secretary of the UCI Phi Beta Kappa chapter.
What Matters to Me and Why - Dr. Shruti Gohil UCI Media 2022-09-28 | Shruti Gohil, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the UCI School of Medicine and Associate Medical Director of Epidemiology & Infection Prevention. Dr. Gohil earned her Medical Doctorate from Tufts University School of Medicine, completed her residency in Internal Medicine at UC Davis, and held a Clinical and Research Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York City. Dr. Gohil’s research focuses on infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship. She has led several large-scale epidemiologic studies evaluating patient risk for sepsis and hospital readmissions. She has created a novel scoring system to identify high risk patients to prevent central line associated bloodstream infections and is currently lead investigator of 4 large randomized controlled trials that develop a “precision medicine” approach to empiric antibiotic selection. In her current administrative role, she is leading UCI Health’s response to the COVID pandemic, including clinical and epidemiologic assessment of healthcare worker and patient management, COVID testing, exposure definition and response, contact tracing, infection prevention strategies to limit spread (e.g., PPE management, environmental handling and cleaning), and vaccination.
What Matters to Me and Why - Paula Smith UCI Media 2022-09-28 | Paula Smith is the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, she has 30 years of experience in college athletic administration.Currently a member of the NCAA Division I Council and Competition Oversight Committee, she's also active in campus entities such as the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, the Chancellor's Advisory Council, and the Campus Ethics and Compliance Risk Committee. Recently she was elected to serve as an ex-officio trustee on the Foundation Board of Trustees.Smith, who is the ninth athletic director in school history, is in her 15th year with the Anteaters and is a member of UCI Athletics' senior management team. She also provides administrative supervision of UCI's athletic program and its 18 intercollegiate athletic teams.In addition to her UCI duties, Smith has served on several national committees such as the NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Committee from 2013 to 2017, the Minority Opportunity and Interest Committee, and the Division I Strategic Planning Cabinet.

What Matters to Me and Why - Joel Veenstra UCI Media 2022-09-28 | Joel Veenstra serves as Associate Chair of Production and Co-head of the Stage Management Program for University of California’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts’ Drama Department. In addition to being a Professor of Teaching, he is an Actors’ Equity Association stage manager, production manager, producer, and improviser. Within his hundreds of credits, his collaborators include Cirque du Soleil, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Cornerstone Theatre Company, Improbable, Warner Bros. Entertainment via Alcon Entertainment, among others. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Applied Improvisation Network (and the 2017 World Conference Chair); the William and Anna VandenBosch Gospel Foundation; and the Stage Managers’ Association (as Western Regional Director), a national organization headquartered in New York City. Improvisation also plays a key component in Veenstra’s teaching, research and creative ventures. While improvisation can be a framework for creating entertainment, Veenstra has also applied improvisational concepts within the fields of business, healthcare, and intergenerational and cultural bridge building. On a human level: whether he’s practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, performing improv comedy, coordinating a production, or advising a struggling student, Veenstra has made a name for himself as the person who can find a path forward when none seems to exist. He calmly and compassionately engages challenges, solves problems, supports his associates, and ensures the show indeed goes on.
