By the 1890s, public perception of drugs in the United States had shifted. Not only did many Americans now want to ban alcohol, they wanted to ban OR regulate ALL DRUGS. Especially highly addictive drugs, like heroin and cocaine.
By that time, doctors had increasingly become more strict about prescribing such drugs to treat patients, but the fact remained that you could still buy a lot of that stuff over the counter. Oh, and most of that stuff didn’t disclose exactly what was in it. Like Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup. Although we’ll never know the exact number, thousands of parents likely accidentally killed their children when they gave them too much Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup. The American Medical Association would later call Winslow’s a “baby killer.”
Many Americans called for the federal government to do something about these dangerous, unlabelled over the counter patent medicines. Before this time, the federal government rarely got involved, though, and let state and local governments handle it. When it did get involved, it was usually the Department of Agriculture looking at the safety of agricultural products.
Americans were also increasingly getting worried about what was in the food they ate that was packaged and sold in markets. After the Industrial Revolution, food production became a worldwide industry. For the first time, food could be packaged in a way that it lasted longer and didn’t spoil so quickly. Well, some food manufacturers might add some extra spices or additives to canned food to uh...hide the bad taste of expired food. Now, since 1879, nearly 100 bills had been introduced in Congress to regulate food and drugs. But they all failed.
But one man was perhaps more determined than any other to change that. Who was that? Why... a chemist named Harvey Washington Wiley. As leader of the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Chemistry, he spent years trying to convince the United States Congress, while simultaneously fighting off the food lobbyists, to pass a law to do this.
It wasn’t just Wiley and his Poison Squad. There were all the muckrakers, or reform-minded journalists of the Progressive Era who called out unsanitary conditions in factories.. There was also this little book called The Jungle.

Do American presidents control the economy? No, not really. However, they can have SOME influence. In this video, Mr. Beat explains how a president can attempt to influence the economy.

Presidents have little control over the economy. As internet dorks like to point out, correlation doesn’t equal causation. It is absolutely ridiculous to blame Donald Trump for the COVID-19 recession. A pandemic obviously caused that recession, not Donald Trump. COVID-19 caused the COVID-19 recession. Not only that, economic indicators, or statistics about how we make choices in an economy, are often lagging, meaning they are confirming stuff that has already long already started.
And yet, this myth persists. The myth that the president pulls all the strings on the economy. That a president creates jobs. In this video, Mr. Beat explains that, despite not controlling the economy, presidents can at least sort of influence it.Why Is Science So Political These Days?Mr. Beat2024-10-17 | Mr. Beat and Nick from @ScienceAsylum sit down IN PERSON to have a conversation about why science seems to have become so political in the current era.

They'll also be voting to CHANGE THE LAW.
There are at least 160 statewide ballot measures across 41 states in the 2024 United States elections.
11 of these measures are related to abortion, a record amount for a single year. Ten ballot measures would create state constitutional rights to have an abortion. In Nebraska, a ballot measure would limit the ability to have an abortion.
6 of these measures ban voting for people who aren’t American citizens. By the way, there’s already a voting ban on noncitizens for federal elections.
5 of these measures would implement ranked choice voting. One would get rid of ranked choice voting in Alaska. Another would prevent ranked choice from ever happening in Missouri.
4 raise the minimum wage. 3 legalize marijuana, including notably in Florida. Massachusetts could become the third state to legalize psychedelics.
There’s a lot more to vote for than just the president.
Hey man, got any of that SAWEET polling data? I need me some more delicious polling data. GIVE IT TO ME.
Wait a second, does polling actually predict election results?
Most of the time, yes. Actually. But while polls may give us a GENERAL picture of who will win, they are much less accurate predicting by how much. For example, they generally predicted Joe Biden would win the 2020 presidential election, but they were about 4 percentage points off.
It’s not surprising that polls wouldn’t be completely accurate because any time we conduct polls there’s a margin of error, the range of values below and above a sample statistic to let us know how much a poll could be wrong. Since it’s nearly impossible to poll EVERY SINGLE VOTER before an election, EVERY poll has a sampling error. But there are also non-sampling errors because stuff just goes wrong, man. (list them on screen)
So what does that mean for the upcoming 2024 election? Well, based on polls, it could be extremely close or a landslide victory for Trump or Harris. Oh no.Jared Bauer and Mr. Beat Interview Each OtherMr. Beat2024-10-05 | Jared Bauer and Mr. Beat have both come up with 10 open-ended questions for each other and have not told each other what they will be ahead of time. For the few Americans who know about what we now call the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the only thing they know about it was that it was a failure. In this video, I'm going to tell you WHY it was a failure, and you better just, like, listen, because if you don’t I will fail you.
The Bay of Pigs Invasion, as most folks call it now, was an embarrassing defeat for Kennedy and the United States. It showed the CIA was in over their heads. They got too cocky and miscalculated. And the agency must have been embarrassed, too, as it classified lots of information that made it look bad.
The invasion also ended up being quite a political victory for Castro and his authoritarian government. It turned not only most Cubans, but most LATIN AMERICANS against the American government, and only made Castro more popular.
Still, despite feeling abandoned by the American government, many of the Cuban exiles who participated in the Bay of Pigs Invasion remained steadfastly loyal to the United States in the following years. Some went on to become officers in the military. Some even served in the Vietnam War. Today, here in the United States we honor members of Brigade 2506 as heroes who tried to overthrow a dictator and free their home country. And what an honor it was to visit the Brigade 2506 Museum and Library in Miami. And good news…it’s getting a brand new building soon! Exciting stuff.
And it was an even GREATER honor to have the privilege of speaking with an actual Bay of Pigs Invasion VETERAN. Dr. Eduardo Zayas-Bazán, thank you for sharing your story with us.Kamala Harris is the Most Active Vice President in U.S. HistoryMr. Beat2024-10-03 | Kamala Harris is the most active Vice President in American history. Produced by Matt Beat. Music by @ElectricNeedleRoom(Mr. Beat's band). #kamalaharris #uspolitics #ushistory
Kamala Harris is the most active Vice President in the United States Senate in history.
Remember, there’s 100 members of the Senate. Whenever there’s a 50-50 tie after a vote, one of the few jobs a Vice President actually has is to BREAK that tie, and of the 301 tie-breaking votes ever cast by vice presidents in the Senate, Harris has cast 33 of them. Yep, she’s broke more ties in the Senate than any other Vice President in American history.
While most of these votes were to approve Joe Biden’s judicial nominees, two notable laws that Harris broke ties for to get them passed were the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act, the biggest law Congress has ever passed to invest in fighting climate change and a big reason why prescription drug prices are going down for tens of millions of Americans.
Hey! I guess being a Vice President isn’t such a useless job after all.A Brief History of the End of the WorldMr. Beat2024-09-27 | Stop leaving yourself vulnerable to data breaches. Go to my sponsor aura.com/mrbeat to get a 14-day free trial and see if any of your data has been exposed.

According to one poll, nearly four out of ten American adults believe that we are currently living in the end times. According to another poll, 83% of people living in Afghanistan said the end times would happen in their lifetime. According to yet another poll, 10% of people around the world think the world is probably going to end THIS YEAR. Oh wait, that was a poll taken in 2012. Well, I guess the world DIDN’T end in 2012, after all. Oh hey…yeah…remember that? Back in 2012 when a lot of people were freaking out about the world ending? There was even a movie that got in on the fun. A really crappy movie. Anyway, the 2012 phenomenon was when a bunch of people thought either world-ending or world-transforming events would happen on or around December 21, 2012, the end-date of a 5,126-year-long cycle described in an ancient Maya calendar. Yeah, that date came and went and the end of the world did not, in fact, happen.
But humans have been saying the end of the world is near. I should clarify, that the end of the end of the world is near FOR HUMANS for at least a couple thousand years.
Here in the United States, it’s often certain Christians are the ones who won’t stop talking about the End Times, often paired with the return of Jesus Christ. But it’s not just Christianity that has been all about apocalypticism, or the belief that the end of the world could happen any day. No, no no no no. Other religions have got in on the fun, too.

Often, we learn history directly from those who experienced it firsthand. But the vast majority of folks who experienced World War Two, firsthand, are now dead. Around 70 million people fought in World War Two. Less than 75,000 of them are still around today. The youngest World War Two veterans today are in their late 90s.
Based on current estimates, nearly all of them will be dead by the year 2040.
I was extremely fortunate to spend some time with two of them.
Wilbur Grisham served as a medic in the Pacific Theater of the war.
Marvin Blakeman served with the 83rd Infantry Division in the European Theater of the war. He landed at Normandy and saw combat as he marched through France, eventually fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.
I also was extremely fortunate to spend the day with Hudson, who works with the channel Memoirs of World War Two. The folks at the channel travel to as many places as they can to interview and honor the few surviving World War Two veterans left. These veterans have not only important stories to share, but fascinating stories. And because they are PERSONAL stories, they capture what history books often can’t. And the videos are incredibly well produced. The channel is a gem. Check it out.

Well now you do. Oh, and uh...watch this video for other facts.
Australia currently has the highest minimum wage in the world.
A minimum wage is the lowest pay employers can legally pay their employees. But while many people around the world take a minimum wage for granted, minimum wage laws have only been around since the 1890s. And approximately 29 countries around the world do not have a minimum wage. Other countries only have a minimum wage for certain TYPES of jobs. Sometimes the minimum wage is per month, not per hour.
Even WITHIN countries there’s lots of different minimum wages. The United States has more than 100 different wages across the country, mostly due to cost of living differences. India has around 2,000 minimum wage rates for different types of industries and skill levels.
So do minimum wage laws actually reduce poverty? Well, we don’t know. That’s a debate that’s been raging since the 1890s. After all, there’s a pretty high standard of living in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and the United Arab Emirates, which are all countries without a minimum wage.4 Reasons Why Were So DividedMr. Beat2024-09-06 | Go to https://ground.news/mrbeat to become a smarter news consumer and stay fully informed. People seem to be more tribalistic than ever. Often, there are two teams, and you’re either with US or you’re with THEM. And if someone from our team joins the rival team, boy we hate them even more than our enemies, don’t we. The word “TRAITOR” seems to roll off our tongues a bit easier these days.
And sure, most of the time it just seems like there are TWO teams, but within these two teams there is an endless amount of smaller teams. The number of people we identify as part of our team seems to be shrinking. The number of enemies we have? Well that seems to be growing. And we seem to hate our enemies more. And while our teams used to be more aligned with families, nations, countries, or religions, now our teams are more aligned with political parties, universities, neighborhood associations, media figures, or even Discord servers. This realignment has even caused family members to not talk to each other anymore. We have splintered so much that it’s even difficult to find someone to date on one of those dating app thingies.
And while the political divide in the United States seems to get all the attention these days, I argue that this is a much more systemic problem.
So why do we no longer have anything in common? In this video, I will tell you exactly why we no longer have anything in common, and I even got some insights from Dr. Sam Richards, the brilliant sociologist who runs the famous SOC 119 class at Penn State that has quite a YouTube following as well. Well, it's probably not as rare as you might think. Nearly 1/3 of all American presidents chose not to run for another term in office.
U.S. President Joe Biden recently announced he would be running for re-election But that was in 2023, which was, like, forever ago, and now he’s actually NOT running for re-election So which OTHER American presidents CHOSE not to seek re-election when they could have?
Well, before presidents were limited to two terms, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Ulysses Grant, Grover Cleveland and Harry Truman all declined to run for a third term. James Buchanan and Rutherford Hayes both announced they’d be one-term presidents at their inaugurations. James Polk announced he’d be a one-term president before he even got elected. And finally Calvin Coolidge and Lyndon Johnson both shocked the nation by announcing they wouldn’t seek a second elected term. So yeah, I get why Biden announcing he would not seek re-election was surprising. He was the first since Johnson to do so.
In total, six presidents didn’t seek a second term and eight presidents did not seek a third term. What makes a good president?Mr. Beat2024-08-16 | Go to https://ground.news/mrbeat to see through media bias and become a smarter news consumer. Henry Clay won an American presidential election by just 4 votes… in Maryland.
Now, Andrew Jackson won the presidential election of 1832 OVERALL, but Clay’s 4-vote victory in Maryland is the smallest margin between two major party candidates in any state in any presidential election ever.
See? Every vote counts. But yeah actually every vote DOESN’T COUNT. Especially back then.
Why? Well because back then electoral votes weren’t awarded based on the popular vote. Sure, USUALLY whoever won the popular vote got all the state’s ELECTORAL VOTES, which are what REALLY count in presidential elections. Even though Clay won Maryland by just 4 votes, Maryland normally WOULD have awarded ALL 10 of its electoral votes to him, but it didn’t. Clay got just five, Jackson three, and two electors didn’t even cast votes! Phhh. I mean, whatever. It’s just the most important American election ever. Would you vote for a politician who could have a conversation with 45,000 different constituents at the same time? Well, voters in Brighton Pavilion in the United Kingdom recently had the opportunity to vote for AI Steve, the first candidate to run for Parliament supposedly controlled by artificial intelligence. AI Steve is actually the brainchild of entrepreneur Steve Endacott, and acted as a virtual double for himself that can supposedly be there for voters when he physically can’t.
But AI Steve isn’t the first political candidate entirely made from AI. A dude from New Zealand introduced the world’s first virtual politician two years ago. Four years before that, an AI candidate ran to be president of Russia against Vladimir Putin. And this year, another dude tried to run an AI Bot for mayor of an American city.
An AI politician? I’m pretty sure that was an episode of Black Mirror, wasn’t it?2024s Most Important Supreme Court DecisionsMr. Beat2024-07-07 | Mr. Beat breaks down what he feels are the most important Supreme Court decisions announced in 2024.

A generation is all the humans born AROUND the same time AND who experienced pretty much the same culture growing up. Specifically, we are talking about SOCIAL generations. Ok, well...almost.
James Madison was the 4th president of the United States But he also could have been the 4th president to die on the 4th!
John Adams, the second American president, and Thomas Jefferson, the third American president, died on the same day- July 4th, 1826. Which is pretty cool not only because that’s the day Americans celebrate as the BIRTHDAY of the United States but it was specifically the 50th birthday of the country.
Less people know that James Monroe, the FIFTH American president, ALSO died on July 4. July 4, 1831…exactly five years after Adams and Jefferson died. And ya know what? Doctors thought it’d be cool if Madison died on the Fourth of July, too. I’m not joking. In June 1836, when Madison was sick and old, his doctors offered to give him stimulants to keep him alive until the 60th birthday of the country, but Madison turned them down.
Instead, Madison broke tradition and died on June 28th.The Full House House Is For SaleMr. Beat2024-06-28 | Look, ain't no way Danny Turner be able to afford the Full House house. Just sayin'.
Yep, THIS house, the one featured in the hit sitcom Full House and the sequel series Fuller House. Located in San Francisco’s Lower Pacific Heights neighborhood. As you could imagine, it’s been a popular tourist attraction for fans of the shows.
Believe it or not, the creator of those shows, Jeff Franklin, owned it for a few years to preserve it for fans. If YOU wanna buy the 3,700 square-foot, 124-year old house, you get the option of buying handprints cast in concrete from members of the cast. Now, you probably know that San Francisco is one of the world’s most expensive cities to live in.
When Full House first aired in 1987, the house was likely worth at least $450,000. In 2016, when Fuller House first aired, Franklin bought it for $4 million.
What’s it being sold for today? $6.5 million. I just don’t think Danny Tanner would have been able to afford it today.hoser and Mr. Beat Interview Each OtherMr. Beat2024-06-22 | Aidan (better known simply as @h0ser) and Mr. Beat came up with 10 open-ended questions for each other and didn't tell each other what the questions were ahead of time. Fletcher v. Peck was the first case in which the Supreme Court ruled a state law was unconstitutional. The decision also established a strong precedent for the importance of contracts. More specifically, the decision further cemented the protection of property rights. Over the next several decades, it established a big obstacle for the state regulation of private companies. Unfortunately, the decision also introduced another precedent- Native Americans did not hold the complete title to their own lands. And so who won the case Fletcher v. Peck? Fletcher AND Peck. Oh snap.

I used to believe that MANY Vietnam War veterans were called “baby-killers” and even spat on by anti-war protestors when they returned home from the war. I bet many of you watching this right now believe this, too. In fact, there are videos on YouTube that bring it up.
But that’s another historical myth.
There is no conclusive evidence of this ever happening, despite many historians trying to uncover such evidence. In fact, according to one poll, only 1% of Vietnam War vets said that their homecoming was “not at all friendly.” Now, I’m not saying a spitting incident didn’t happen at all, but if it did, the evidence proving it is shaky.
So how did this myth originate? Eh, it maybe started with this G.I. Joe cartoon from the 1980s, then was later repeated by politicians making fun of anti-war protestors.Mr. Beat and MrBeast ComparedMr. Beat2024-05-17 | 🔒Remove your personal information from the web at http://JoinDeleteMe.com/mrbeat and use code MRBEAT for 20% off US consumer plans 🙌 DeleteMe International Plans: international.joindeleteme.com

People confuse Mr. Beat and Mr. Beast all the freaking time. But they're very different YouTubers. One makes quickly-paced videos with highly professionalized production. The other makes much slower-paced videos with much less flashy production. I mean, look at that. That’s pathetic.
Mr. Beast makes entertainment videos that sometimes accidentally educate his audience. Mr. Beat makes educational videos that sometimes accidentally entertain his audience. Most of Mr. Beast’s videos are basically game shows for an audience with a much shorter attention span. Baby boomers and Generation X had the Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune. Gen Z and Generation Alpha have Mr. Beast. That said, Mr. Beast also has had success with videos in which, ya just get to see things you would NEVER get to see otherwise. There’s a lot of stunts, like “last person to leave” stuff. Mr. Beat, on the other hand, mostly makes American political history videos. He’s mostly known for his videos about American presidents, but he also has more general history stuff, as well as geography and economics stuff.

The Vietnam War was the longest war in American history up to that point, only surpassed by the War in Afghanistan in 2021 lasting six months longer. The war dramatically hurt the reputation of the United States. It hurt…uh…the UNITED STATES quite a bit, too. Today, the Vietnam War is seen as pointless. That was a quote not from me, Mr. Beat, but from a dude who was never supposed to be president. But he was!
A dude who never even sought to be a LEADER, but who history FORCED to be one of the greatest leaders in American history.
A dude who failed at multiple business ventures and even went bankrupt.
A dude who, after he was president, moved back into the same house he lived in back when he went bankrupt, and then went into debt again because his only income was an Army pension of $112.56 a month. That’s less than $1300 a month in today’s money.

Carnegie proved that not just people born into privilege could become extremely wealthy. Sure, he was ruthless at times. Many argue that he exploited and dehumanized his workers. Throughout his working career, he seemingly prioritized the bottom line over all else. It was all about making as much money as possible. He believed individualism ultimately improved society more than collectivism.
But Andrew Carnegie would argue that the ends justifies the means. He argued that the rich were obligated to use their wealth to give back to society. Heck, he even argued that if the rich weren’t going to give back willingly to society, then governments should tax them so that they are forced to give back. Carnegie firmly believed that the future leaders of society would and SHOULD come from the working class.
