This Gel Plate Hack Blew My Mind 🤯 Drew Steinbrecher - Art 2025-09-07 | Did you know you can make beautifully textured gel prints using baby powder?It sounds a little wild, but it works!Here’s how I do it:First, roll out some paint onto your gel plate like you normally would. Then sprinkle baby powder right over the paint. You can use just a little for subtle texture, or go heavy-handed for bold effects.Next, lay your paper down and let it sit on the plate for a moment so the texture really grabs before pulling your print.And the best part is, you don’t even need to clean your plate. Just keep layering more paint and printing again and again for a really cool textured effect. You can also try using transparent paints for layered depth.If you don’t have baby powder on hand, you can also use pure cornstarch/cornflour.This technique is one of those “why not try it?” experiments. Layering Prints = Instant Wow 🤯 Drew Steinbrecher - Art 2025-08-31 | Basic layering on a gel plate...it might sound simple, but it will give you endless possibilities!Here are some key things to remember:Stencils work well for layering. I like to use stencils on the first layer for crisp shapes or texture. This will show up on top in the final print.You always need to let each layer dry before moving on to the next step.Consider the opacity of the paint. I started this print with a transparent color so that the base layer would shine through. On the next layer, I used an opaque paint, which sits on top and gives you that contrast and definition. Playing with transparency versus opacity is what creates depth and dimension in your print.Once you add your last layer of paint, place your paper down, let it sit for a few minutes, and then pull the print.Layering is all about experimenting and seeing how colors, stencils, and masks interact.If you’re interested in learn more about how to work with gel plates, I’m teaching a free class that goes over the very basics of gel plate printing. Drew Steinbrecher - Art 2025-04-27 | One of the easiest ways to create texture on a gel plate...yarn!🧶 It's simple:- Add paint to the gel plate.- Lay down the yarn.- Experiment with different weights of yarn and thread.- Lay down your paper and press, making sure the paper is making contact with the plate.Ghost prints are always great with yarn... remove the yarn, and after the paint is dry, add more paint to the plate. Select collage papers for base layer. Most of my collage papers are printed on a gel plate.- Here I'm use a Speedball Handbook Journal.- I use gel plate printed papers printed on copy/cartridge paper.2. Trim papers and glue down on to page.- I use UHU or Elmer’s glue sticks.3. Add a layer of translucent acrylic ink.- I like Liquitex alcohol inks- I use a silicone color shaper to spread the paint4. Add marks using markers.- I like various markers, from Sharpies to Tombow to acrylic paint markers.5. Add more collage elements.6. Add opaque paint to cover up some of the previous layers.- I like using Golden heavy body acrylics.7. Layer of gel printed tissue papers using matte medium as glue.- Spectra art tissue works well. Any wet strength tissue can work.- I like Liquitex Matte Medium.8. One last layer of collage, because I can’t help myself.- In this collage I used pieces of torn posts I ripped off walls in NYC, applied with glue stick.9. Troubleshooting magazine transfers on a gel plate, part 1: contrast… #art #gelplate #shorts Drew Steinbrecher - Art 2024-06-26 | Troubleshooting magazine transfers on a gel plate, part 1: contrast…Choose images that have high contrast.The first magazine page does not have enough contrast and doesn’t leave the resist on the plate.Images with a lot of contrast work best.Black and white images work really well.BTW, “image transfer” is a misnomer... what’s really happening is a resist... the black/darker areas on the magazine page resist the paint on the plate and leave it.
