The girl always felt guilty for being so dependent on him, but she still really liked him. And then, the day she died, he cried for her, even if he had been strong enough never to cry before. And she wanted, wished to stay. Her wish was granted, but somehow, it was different. Maybe they couldn't touch each other, or something. She was like a ghost of sorts. But as the days passed, she realized that staying behind really didn't make any of them any happier. She was still causing trouble for him, and he couldn't move on. I've said it before, but I'm a sucker for those. In fact, one of my favorite Gumi songs back in the day was "Your Love Will Surely Skyrocket!", and it had these cutesy pitch shifts that in retrospect sound pretty terrible! But back then, boy, I melted. I found it so neat and lovely... Enough reminiscing! The title of this song was a bit tricky. It's supposed to be like "the word for X", but instead of expressing it in word, you use flowers. Thus, "The Flower for Undecember." Undecember, speaking of, is a 13th month following the same system as last four (SEPTember, OCTober, NOVember, DECember). I've heard it referenced twice now in Japanese lyrics, which is a bit weird. Anywho, that's the gist of it. The tuning is marvelous and the lyrics are rather nice and sufficiently sad. At least that's what I gathered. Well, Vocaloid or not, this is just beautiful. These vocals are some of the most realistic I have ever heard from a synthesizer, and that's saying a lot! These types of slow, traditionally inspired songs have a tendency to fall flat unless sung with great tuning that brings out the emotion in the voicebank, but here's is a great example of how to pull it off. Simply marvelous!Small translation note: The title, Kachou Fuuei, represents this very vague concept of nature and the harmony of nature as a poetic theme (for example in haiku). Or is it you?"Requested by Totalidiocy. And uh, I guess I gotta thank him/her/it for the request, because this song was freaking awesome. First things first, Miko sounds wonderful and the music is so bizarre in places, I love it just as much as I did in Lying Wolf. But this story, oh lawd this story. The title...it sounds bad, I know, but I really didn't want to ruin the meaning since it pertains to the actual "plot". I also wanted to keep it congruent with "existence affirmation" which is in the lyrics themselves. A more accurate title might be "A View on the Affirmation of Narcissistic Tendencies", or something of the sort. Another translation quirk is the line "I'll die of loneliness." That's, uh, totally made up. The actual lyrics quite literally means "being alone is hard", BUT instead of using 一人 (literally one person) for the word "alone", they use 一匹 (one small animal), to reinforce that Miko is indeed like a pet. And I figured, animals being able to die of loneliness is a common misconception, so it sorta fit. Some creative freedom there. Lastly, I just wanna express how damn clever I think this story is. Seriously, listen to it, think about the lyrics and the title and the little comment in quotations. It's so neat. I mean, there has been other songs with sort of a pseudo story, but this is an actual from-start-to-finish story, and it was SO much fun translating and, well, reading! It features Miko Ooka, a pretty popular UTAUloid with an adorable voice. In Japanese, her name is read Ooka Miko, ookamiko, meaning wolf-child, which reflects her design. So I guess this is kind of HER song, isn't it?Let's see, there were some other things. There is a modified proverb in there, translated as "If man's rumor last but 75 days, how long does a wolf's last?" The original proverb is the equivalent of the English "a wonder lasts but nine days", but I translated it pretty literally since its literal meaning is important to the song itself. There is also mention of the Tower of Babel. The story goes that people, all speaking one unified language, began building a tower to heaven. God didn't much care for this, so he "confounded the language of all the earth" and scattered the people to different corners of the world. I guess wolves were included in this story, eh? Also, there is a lot of Monogatari-style screen with neat text that gives some additional story, so make sure you pause to read them! That's all I had to say.
