My assumption is not all of this is out there or else Game Show Network and/or Buzzr would air more than the handful of episodes from the same handful of weeks that we've seen a lot of times before.
Here's an episode from the studio master, including the slate AND the original commercials!! Heck, it's even got a ticket plug, which I imagine you have never seen before. Taped 4/20/70, our celebrities are Jackie and John Davidson, Sally Field and Steve Craig, Nanette Fabray and Ranald "Randy" McDougall, and Joyce and Alejandro Rey.Whats My Line? with Mystery Guest Willie Mays (1968)GarryMooreFan2024-06-19 | As always, I wish I was uploading stuff like this under better circumstances, but RIP. As a child, Bill Walton was one of my favorite sports commentators and I have so many fond memories of his weird sense of humor while calling games for the NBA on NBC, ESPN, and ABC. And I had so much respect for him as an athlete, the original posterchild for sports legends who had their careers taken from them too early due to injuries beyond their control. There's no way the Blazers don't dominate the rest of the 1970s into the early 80s if Bill stays healthy.
I was so sad when he took a break from broadcasting in the early 2010s and glad that he decided to return in recent years on a much more reduced schedule doing college basketball games and was the same weird, quirky guy that I loved listening to when I was a kid. When I heard that he was taking time off for medical reasons again a few months back I feared the worst, and unfortunately my fears were indeed founded. RIP Bill. Throw it down, big man.
Here's the January 6th, 1980 airing of the nighttime version of The Hollywood Squares with Peter Marshall, with Stars from the World of Sports. This was an interesting one in that usually when they did themed celebrity weeks the show will try to include a comedian or two to add more humor to the game, but this time they didn't add a single one.
The Squares are packed with sports legends, unfortunately some of them are no longer with us. Mickey Mantle, JoJo Starbuck, Moses Malone, Janet Guthrie, Bill Walton, Cathy Rigby, "Sugar" Ray Leonard, Bob Seagren, and Paul Hornung as your Center Square. Fittingly, even in this episode Bill makes sure to namedrop The Grateful Dead, the only passion of his that was bigger than basketball.
Unfortunately this cuts off after the 18 minute mark, but I hope you still enjoy. Our usual Cass/Cullen/Carlisle trio are joined by an old friend, Nipsey Russell, and tasked with some interesting subjects in this episode.
Our first subject is a man who is an expert on privacy, and America's growing loss of privacy. It features Bruno Zirato and Roger Peterson, producers of the show, and *HILARIOUS* portions of phone conversations the two had with the panel!! While hilarious, it also hammered home the first subject's concerns over privacy invasion and how shockingly easy it is to record a phone conversation without someone even knowing. Very interesting game on a subject where nothing really has changed over the years.
Our second game while exciting isn't exactly as thought-provoking, but still fun is had. We have a woman who is a rafting expert, having been on very dangerous rivers and rapids, that even runs some touring events on the waters.Japanese McDonalds commercial for McMuffin breakfast sandwiches, 1986GarryMooreFan2024-04-13 | Here's a McDonald's Japanese TV spot touting the chain's world famous breakfast sandwiches, McMuffins.Ninja Hattori-kun Famicom commercial, 1986GarryMooreFan2024-04-13 | 1986 commercial for the Famicom video game port of Ninja Hattori-kun, a long-running Japanese anime/manga franchise. (1970)GarryMooreFan2024-01-07 | Here's a fun episode of To Tell the Truth from the 2nd season of the series in 1970. Our panel of Cass, Cullen, and Carlisle are joined by Gene Rayburn and tasked with identifying a man who is working on walking the length of the entire world in the first game, but it's the second game this episode is being uploaded for. In game two, Goodson-Todman staffers Jerry Chester, Ann Nixon, and Ira Skutch are the three contestants. One of them was recently involved in jury duty and have written a book about their time on the jury. Luckily someone happens to be in the audience to help him out!!
And because I know some of you will ask about this in the comments, the reason for the help, as well as the reason why celebrities would often help the other celebrities up to the $32,000 Question, is because if you pay attention to the credits of any of these episodes, there's a disclaimer that says that every celebrity who appears on the show is given $32,000 to their favorite charity right off the bat, automatically. Which indeed means that yes, the playing up for the $32,000 Question is basically considered superfluous. At that point they're just farming for good funny moments. Which, if you have an issue with that, this is for charity so who cares?Space Battleship Yamato: Final Saga/Final Yamato television commercial (1983)GarryMooreFan2023-11-08 | 1983 television commercial for the impending theatrical release of Space Battleship Yamato: Final Saga/Final Yamato. It had such a short life on the air but it was such a nice concept that I wish gained more viewers than it did, and Peter Tomarken as great as usual. Love his narrations for the history video packages!! Last night I went down a YouTube rabbit hole and wanted to listen to the theme again because it's a bop imo and then happened to see that almost every upload of this show on YouTube is in absolute atrocious quality. Like, I'm not gonna pretend any of the episodes in my collection are pristine, but frankly these uploads by other people on this website are inexcusably bad and I wish I knew this earlier. So I'm going to try and help this little show out with some better quality uploads from my collection.
Our first episode will be the premiere from January 3rd, 1983, a cool day in game show history as Sale of the Century and the short-lived Betty White game show Just Men! also both made their debuts on NBC on this date (saying this in the description so that poindexters don't flood the comments like usual). Our subjects will be The Wizard of Oz and the history of jeans. Expect a couple more episodes coming up!!Circle K convenience store commercial featuring a young Arino from GameCenter CX (1998)GarryMooreFan2023-08-14 | Another commercial featuring Arino before his fame from GameCenter CX and his Yoiko comedy partner Masaru Hamaguchi, this time promoting the Japanese version of the Circle K convenience store that existed for a few decades in Japan. This comes from a December 31st, 1998 Doraemon New Year's Eve special. Always cool to see Arino!!Kodocha fansubbers call it quitsGarryMooreFan2023-08-06 | Been watching a collection of Kodocha episodes that were fansubbed by a group of people in the late 90s. It's a show I've seen before, I like it a bunch, but I'm mostly watching these versions because they even included the original commercials from the timeframe, but also it's been a fascinating time capsule of fansubbing at the time.
During commercial breaks of various episodes they've used the commercials as a collection of translation notes and general housekeeping, but more hilariously they've also used some of the commercial breaks as a soundboard for how much they dislike the show as well as their general dislike for Sana's character. Some of the more hilarious notes include them completely misunderstanding a joke about German, as well as them trying to shut down weird rumors like how the voice of Sana was also in Evangelion. Just weird, pointless stuff in hindsight but really makes you feel like you're involved in a little community in a way.
You see the complaining, general confusion, and disappointment on the directon of the show happen more and more throughout the episodes, as well as constant problems with finding consistent translators, and then it's finally at the end of episode 16 where the fansubbers have reached their breaking point and finally decide to call it quits in a long soliloquy airing their grievances about the series once and for all while also telling you where you can go instead if you want to keep following the series from here. Overall, just fascinating stuff in my eyes.Remote Control syndication promo (1989)GarryMooreFan2023-08-06 | From the December 28th, 1989 airing of the Dragon Ball movie (well technically it's movies one and three smushed together and edited but you know what I mean) on a local Philadelphia station is this commercial promo for the syndication season of Remote Control.Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer TV commercial (1984)GarryMooreFan2023-07-31 | This cool little thing aired after the 1/13/84 episode of Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel, a special 90 second TV commercial for the upcoming movie theater release of Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer. Bill Cullen is hosting while Garry Moore is away on vacation, and we have a pretty legendary doozy of a notable first subject in this one.
Today, our panel of Nipsey Russell, Kitty Carlisle, Orson Bean, and Peggy Cass and tasked to identify the real Charles Hickson in game one. UFO enthusiasts will know that name very well, as he is one of the two men that claimed to have been abducted by alien creatures in what is known as the Pascagoula Abduction. Very notably, even Orson Bean is skeptical of the lie detector aspect, pointing out that all a passed lie detector test means is that you truly believe what happened happened, rather than if it truly happened. Orson also calls Godzilla an "obscure monster"... how interesting to think of a world where Godzilla films didn't dominate the syndication stations on weekend afternoons!! :) *cough cough* OK, I can make fun of Orson for knowing nothing about Godzilla just a little bit, as a treat.
Meanwhile in game two, the panel is tasked to identify an anthropology professor and expert on native tribes in Peru, who even spent time living there and took a hallucinogenic drug offered to her by one of the natives.Japanese Mac Tonight McDonalds commercial (1989)GarryMooreFan2023-06-04 | Yup, Mac Tonight wasn't just a mascot in the US. But still cool!!To Tell the Truth #1444 (Taped 12/19/72) w/Miss Teenage America 1972 + an adolescent suicide expertGarryMooreFan2023-05-25 | An episode of Garry Moore's version of To Tell the Truth today, because if I don't return to my namesake and roots every now and then I am only disappointing myself. Taped December 19th, 1972 (and one of the last episodes from the era of the second set before the show moves into the third and final blue, blocky set), a panel of Jack Cassidy, Peggy Cass, Orson Bean, and Kitty Carlisle are tasked with two interesting subjects today.
In game one, we have Melissa Galbrey, Miss Teenage America 1972. In game two, in a move that I somehow feel was a subtle jab at the expectations of children who are forced to compete by their parents in contests and pageants like in the first game, we have a child psychologist, Dr. Pamela Cantor, who specializes in adolescent suicide. Game two is great, with some great questioning and incredibly well-briefed imposters, and it's very apparent that this is a subject that everyone takes very seriously.
At the end of the game, we even get a cameo from Bill Wendell, who goes into the studio audience to see if any audience members have questions they'd like to ask to Dr. Cantor. Dr. Cantor is more than happy to give out wonderfully detailed answers in what was an unfortunately all too brief segment of the show.Whats My Line? episode with Vida Blue as the Mystery Guest (1973)GarryMooreFan2023-05-13 | Taped May 31st, 1973, here is an episode of What's My Line? with baseball legend Vida Blue as today's Mystery Guest. Worth it to hear Regis Philbin saying the names of various Pokémon alone imo. Also wild because imagine living in a world today where Frodo (which yeah, is the correct answer here) wasn't a recognized enough name for anyone to make the "well duh, Frodo isn't a Pokémon" connection.
Yes, this is the episode where John Carpenter, at the tail end, begins his run towards $1,000,000 which concludes on the next episode. Only saying it here because I know there's a couple of Poindexters whose days I'm ruining by not giving them the opportunity to be the first to say so in the comments. :)Concentration: clip from July 23rd, 1971 episodeGarryMooreFan2023-01-18 | Proud to present this to you!! A sadly all too brief clip from the July 23rd, 1971 episode of Concentration on NBC. I'm just glad that it's long enough that we even get to see some gameplay!!
As far as I know, this is the first publicly available color videotape (I know the finale exists from a color kinescope) footage from this series that has made its way anywhere. Enjoy this look back at what will probably be the cleanest footage of this show that we'll possibly ever see. Gotta love Bob Clayton!! And again, sadly this all too brief clip cuts out before we can get really deep into the game. Unfortunately, this is all I've got, but be glad we've finally got something now!!
Special thanks to Greg Brobeck for help in locating the airdate of this clip.Super Password: Dreaming About Gene Wood?! Episodes from the first season of Garry Moore's version of To Tell the Truth are pretty hard to come by. There's a handful that are out there but none are publicly available. Not even I have seen any!! That was until this episode popped up on various private websites out of nowhere last month, seemingly from what I can tell, via some sort of Richard Nixon media archive library. Here's, from very late in the run of the first season of the show, episode #0381 of To Tell the Truth, which aired on May 18th, 1970 on the station this comes from.
Today, our usual trio of Peggy Cass, Bill Cullen, and Kitty Carlisle, are joined by another old friend, Orson Bean, and tasked with identifying an Roman Catholic priest who doubles as a unicycle instructor in game one. Meanwhile, in game two, someone who tasked as a "gift buyer" for various politicians and dignitaries is our subject.
Enjoy folks, who knows when another one from this season will ever publicly turn up.Match Game 77: Just another example of Richard Dawsons insane ESP (July 12th, 1977)GarryMooreFan2022-11-03 | Richard Dawson was the best game player of Match Game, far and away. Dude was picked all the time for the Head-to-Head Match for a reason. Here's an incredible example of just how good he was. This Head-to-Head Match almost ends in disaster when Richard struggles to decide on what to pick for "BLANK Fast" with many choices but none that are calling out to him, before he finally decides to go with his gut instinct. Incredible moment, and maybe one of Richard's finest Head-to-Head matches on the show.To Tell the Truth #0862 (1971): Gene Rayburn on the panelGarryMooreFan2022-10-25 | As always, I am more than happy to provide the Garry Moore To Tell the Truth content that the internet does not get nearly enough of. Here's an episode that I have long greatly enjoyed from 1971. Our usual trio of Cass/Cullen/Carlisle are joined by Gene Rayburn for two interesting games. In game one, we have a wine expert and count who has brought along some rare wines for the panel to sample, which Peggy, Kitty, and ESPECIALLY Gene are very excited about.
Meanwhile, in game two, we have a 16 year old champion horse rider and trainer. What makes this game so interesting is not the game itself, but Gene's antics. He's *still* drinking the wine (and clearly having an, ahem, good time) even during game two, and at one point during the show he steals one of Bill's glasses, and grabs the whole bottle for himself!! If you're a Gene Rayburn fan (and really, who isn't?), here's a hidden gem of a great Gene moment for you.Beat The Clock (1971) w/Robert MorseGarryMooreFan2022-10-16 | Here's Robert "Bobby" Morse on an episode of Beat The Clock in 1971. It always was weird to me how rarely this version of Beat The Clock was in GSN's schedule rotation. Even the Monty Hall version got more play. There's quite a bunch of the Narz/Wood version that hasn't aired in 50 years!!To Tell the Truth (2000) w/horror icon and Friday the 13th star, Kane Hodder, AKA Jason VoorheesGarryMooreFan2022-10-11 | Here's a fun one for the horror/slasher fans such as myself. Legendary horror icon Kane Hodder is today's central subject in the first half of this To Tell the Truth episode from 2000. Hodder has been Jason Voorhees of Camp Crystal Lake in four of the Friday the 13th films, and is still very much a fixture in horror in the present day. Meanwhile in game two, we have a Sea World staffer who has rescued various sea life.
A panel of Meshach Taylor, Paula Poundstone, Robert Hays, Cindy Margolis are all tasked with figuring out today's two subjects.Designing Women CBS Sitcom Debut Promo (August 29th, 1986)GarryMooreFan2022-10-01 | I know I normally just do game shows most of the time but this was too neat to pass up and I am pretty sure this hasn't been seen in any capacity in over 35 years, here's a promo promoting the debut of the CBS sitcom Designing Women, featuring the entire season one main cast of Delta Burke, Annie Potts (always my eternal crush), Jean Smart, and Dixie Carter. Constance and Ritha are romantic hopefulsGarryMooreFan2022-09-22 | Here's a bit of a GSN rarity, one of the few times they ever aired an episode of the Elaine Joyce version of The Dating Game besides one of Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s appearances. This one features a Playboy Playmate in the first game. I like Elaine a lot because while she's nervous she's clearly having a good time and having a lot of fun, but there's something off about the presentation of this version of the show and I think a lot of it boils down to the set. It looks like the pilot of a show that was created to rip off The Dating Game rather than just having the iconic look the show typically had. Either way, it still had a lot of the same wrinkles and it's worth checking out at least once.Nighttime Celebrity Sweepstakes promo (1976)GarryMooreFan2022-09-09 | Promo for the nighttime version of Celebrity Sweepstakes.
