I was glued to my TV when I first started Bowsers Fury. I honestly dont know what I expected, but I didnt expect what felt like a Super Mario Odyessy quality Mario experience, albeit, shorter of course. I had an absolutely blast getting all 100 shines within 24 hours of installing the game (with some time to play 3D World with Adriana in there too!), but the real reason I was excited to dig into this was the trailer that was released and about a million messages immediately asking if I was going to cover this once it was heard.
Ive always been iffy on covering things that are already metal, it takes a lot of the creative process out and some of the reward for getting to hear a composition ramped up in intensity. Lately, Ive been really trying to let go of that and find that songs like this have their fun in the playing rather than the production as theyre actually written for the instrument Im playing it with (wow, imagine that). This was a lot of fun and I tried to still ramp up the intesity with it.
I usually go with someone else for vocals, but I think Im finally reaching a point of saying f*ck it and just going for stuff like this even if I dont feel confident. I did vocals for my Red Dead Redemption 2 cover mostly as a joke, but people seemed to really enjoy them and also the back up vocals I did for Devil Trigger and Rules of Nature. Everytime I cover something from Danganronpa and sometimes even on songs that arent Danganronpa, I get comments demanding I cover Scrum Debate from V3. I finished V3 about a month after it came out and even still I find myself thinking about the ending, the characters, and the story to this day... But the one thing that puzzled me most of all is how to make Scrum Debate, an epic yet fairly repetitive electronic bop, into an enticing metal cover. I found myself coming to the conclusion it wasnt possible so I usually just told people not to expect it.
This week I just decided to do it. Even if it didnt sound good, I wanted to at least try it. It got me to break out my Digitech Whammy Pedal again to take on those crazy synth lines and also got me to try my hand at incorperating 808 kicks like I did way back in my Winterbliss cover from Castle Crashers. Even with all that and putting in a wacky solo, I still found myself worrying it wouldnt work. Adriana took a listen and told me, not every song has to be attention grabbing at every moment, sometimes a song just has to be a vibe. So I hope thats what this cover is for you guys. A vibe.
