Compilation contains Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. These are NOT emulated, they are true ports to the Saturn. If they were going to do that, why they didn't get rid of the ugly over-scan areas is beyond me. I guess they didn't have modern TVs and monitors in mind.20 Mins Of...Sonic R Intro (US/Saturn)Always Game Over2025-09-21 | 20 minute loop of the attract mode for Sonic R. Cartridge was made by Acclaim for the 1995 tournament. The challenges in order are NBA JAM TE (free team select, single 2:30 quarter of play, court special icons on) and Judge Dredd (infinite lives, as much time as you're normally given to complete the stage to rack up as many points as possible) with your cumulative points being put together at the end.
I know, I'm terrible. Point is more to show what they game play of it is like, not to perform perfectly.
A few thoughts...NBA JAM TE, good, played a ton of it back in the day. The computer seems to hit 3-pointers way unnaturally well in this version, and you seem to unnaturally suck at it. You even get bonus points for 3-pointers that you do hit.
Judge Dredd...what the hell. Did the game actually suck this bad? I never played it up until now, so I have no familiarity with it. I don't know what stage you are on even. Is it the first stage? Also, is that boss thing alien at the end even able to be killed? Did I go the wrong way and there is an exit somewhere? I thought about just running around farming points and picking up items for points. I guess that is maybe what I should have done.
The event itself...I do not remember this one taking place. I did participate in the Blockbuster World Video Game Championship I (the first one, apparently this is the second one) at our local store. However, there was no cartridge that went along with it, and we played 3 games on 3 systems. I recall TMNT Tournament Fighters on Genesis, Clay Fighter on SNES, and something on NES that I cannot remember for the life of me. The store clerk manually kept track of time and scoring. My friend and I got rocked, didn't stand a chance, the older kids got us easily. Anyone work one of these?
Would love to hear any comments from folks who participated. Did you win anything? Did you play these exact games on this cartridge? Please comment away, I know I'd find them interesting!Nintendo World Championships 1990 - Full Longplay (No Commentary/US/NES)Always Game Over2025-09-08 | A run through of the NES World Championships 1990 cart. Set to 5 mins time limit via the dip switch settings. The challenges in order are Super Mario Bros (get 50 coins), Rad Racer (complete the stage), and Tetris (get highest score possible with the time you have remaining).
Yes, I know I suck. Point is more to show what they game play of it is like, not to perform perfectly.
I don't have many thoughts on this, its a cool little curiosity of a NES game. I have the new version on Switch, it would have been boss if they actually included this fully emulated as an unlockable or something. It's astounding what the real cartridges of this cost. Also, found it interesting that Nestopia allows you to turn on a visible timer while emulating it if you wish (I did not). Was there a real external clock while you played at the event?
Would love to hear from anyone who participated in this back in the day. I was only 11 at the time, and they did not hold this anywhere near where I lived (at least to my knowledge, I followed all the teasers in Nintendo Power pretty closely). Please comment away, I know I'd find them interesting!20 Mins Of...Strip Fighter II Intro (JPN/PCE)Always Game Over2025-09-08 | 20 minute loop of the intro to Strip Fighter II (Japanese only release on the PC-Engine). Very good game, actually. It's a shame the TG16 failed in the states or perhaps we would have seen this come over. I'd say I like it better than the Genesis version, but not as much as the SNES version.
