On 17th August, McMurtry debuted on the full 2.238 mile WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, going the right way round this time, having won the reverse direction Corkscrew hillclimb there the weekend prior.
Two Spéirling’s took to the legendary circuit to show drivers and spectators fan cars running again at Laguna during a 10 min demonstration session, over 50 years since the original Chaparral 2J fan car first competed there.
The blue Spéirling PURE VP1 was driven by friend of the company Philip Kadoorie, who completed 7 laps in front of the spectators at the Monterey Motorsport Reunion where he was there to race a Porsche 962 Group C car.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed record Spéirling was driven by Thomas Yates, Managing Director of McMurtry.
The aim was to demonstrate the cars doing longer session durations opposed to single qualifying style laps, and also for the cars to be driven by non-professional drivers to show that this seemingly unattainable performance level is still accessible by normal driving enthusiasts.
Philip’s first flying lap was enough to beat the EV record, almost by accident. His session best was 1:18.413 which is the new outright EV record at Laguna Seca.
In fact, every single one of Philips flying laps was under the existing EV record of 1:26.7 set by the Unplugged Performance modified 1020hp Tesla Model S Plaid which achieved a top 10 at the 2023 Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. It’s not massively fair to compare a purpose built track car to other production or production based records but it is noteworthy however that Philip achieved this lap time whilst running in a 50% power and downforce mode for the demo, which highlights the pace advantage inbuilt to a Spéirling fan car. For reference, Philips' time was 6.3s faster than the production car record set by the Czinger 21C.
This demonstration bodes well for some McMurtry customers who wish to learn with their own Spéirling’s to then set their own records on other circuits and hillclimbs.
Philip enthused he would love to return in future years to Laguna Seca to try the higher settings.
The McMurtry Spéirling generates up to 4,400 pounds of downforce from 0mph, using onboard fans, to give hard to believe dynamic performance. Using advance P50B battery cells from Molicel, the customer version of the cars will perform 20 mins of track running at GT3 pace before recharging again in 20 mins. With the potential to run much faster as demonstrated by other record’s set by McMurtry at Goodwood, Hockenheim, Castle Combe and the Laguna Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb.
Thomas Yates said “The world’s first fan car took pole position here in Can-am 54 years ago - the Chaparral 2J. To have followed in those wheel tracks, showing what our modern take on a fan car can do, has been really special. There are so many passionate spectators, drivers and collectors here, the reception has been fantastic.”
Philip Kadoorie said “Getting to drive one of my favourite tracks in the Spéirling has been truly great. I have gone four seconds faster around here than I ever have before. The car is easy to drive and invites you to build speed with each lap. The confidence I had with the fan assisted aero is one of the reasons we broke the EV record today without really trying. I’d love to return next year and try the more powerful fan and power settings next for the outright lap record.”ONBOARD - McMurtry Spéirling fan car sets LAGUNA SECA Reverse Hillclimb RECORDMcMurtry Automotive2024-08-14 | Record Time: 21.958s set on 11th August by Max Chilton in the McMurtry Spéirling.

It was McMurtry’s dynamic debut in the USA as part of a suite of car week activities
Goodwood Festival of Speed record holding combination Max Chilton and the McMurtry Spéirling were in action here.
Old Hillclimb record surpassed by 6 seconds (Previous record set by Lotus Type 77 F1 car), 28.6s vs 34.69s.
New record set on shorter 2024 layout, 21.958s, during the top 3 shootout
The unique fan downforce system draws power from the bespoke McMurtry battery system incorporating high performance Molicel lithium-ion cells The McMurtry Spéirling PURE hyper-track car starts at £895k + taxes & delivery. (Equivalent approx $US 1.142m)
The British built McMurtry Spéirling electric fan car claimed two records and maintained its 100% win rate in competition at the ‘Laguna Seca Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb’ on Sun 11th August.
It’s the same hyper-track car and driver combination which holds the outright record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Max Chilton, former F1 and Indycar driver, was at the wheel for the two day event as part of the Monterey Motorsports Pre-Reunion.
This event was also McMurtry’s US dynamic debut, a country home to a number of existing McMurtry customers who are looking forward to test driving the prototypes that the team have bought here for car week.
The first Hillclimb record beaten by McMurtry was the longer layout used at previous events. Max Chilton and the McMurtry Spéirling achieved 28.6s compared to the previous record set by a 1976 Lotus Type 77 Formula One Car at 34.69s. The 6 seconds advantage was achieved using the unique McMurtry fan downforce system to enhance grip coupled with the instant torque of the 1000bhp electric powertrain.
The McMurtry Spéirling also set a new record on the revised shorter layout, introduced for 2024. A 21.958s was achieved in the top 3 shootout, where timing strips were installed to record the rapid ascents from many competitors. Second place finisher was a 1967 Ford Falcon race car with a 29.004s and third place was a 2022 Ferrari SF90 with a 29.822.
McMurtry are using the coming weeks primarily for private customer test drives and also showcasing the cars in public at a number of events:
The Motorlux party on Wed 14th Aug at the Monterey Jet Centre. 17.00-22.00. The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, on Fri 16th Aug. 9.00-16.00. Demo Laps on Laguna Seca Full Circuit, Sat 17th Aug, 11.50-12.00. L'Auberge Carmel, Sun 18th Aug 9.00-22.00
The Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb uses the legendary Corkscrew corner plus turns 11, 10 and 9, driven the wrong way to normal racing. The Laguna Hillclimb was inspired by the spectacle and variety of entrant’s the Goodwood Festival of Speed and was started 3 years ago. McMurtry laid down a fresh record on the new shorter layout and beat the old hillclimb record during a specially organised run over the respective course.
The McMurtry Spéirling generates 4,400 pounds of downforce from 0mph, using onboard fans, to give hard to believe dynamic performance. Using advance P50B battery cells from Molicel, the customer version of the cars will perform 20mins of track running at GT3 pace before recharging again in 20mins. With the potential to run much faster, as demonstrated by this and other records achieved.
Max Chilton said “The Corkscrew is one of the most famous corner’s in the world. Normally it’s a blind approach on entry, so in the reverse hillclimb it’s unsighted on the exit. You have to shoot up the 18 metres elevation change and then hope you’ve picked the right line as you launch over the top. Luckily I had fan downforce to help keep me stuck to the ground. It’s been quite a special experience to compete in and set a record in the Laguna Seca Hillclimb”
The McMurtry Spéirling is the basis for an even more capable track car, which is now available to order - the McMurtry Spéirling PURE.
The McMurtry Spéirling PURE utilises the same unique downforce-on-demand system to provide exceptional downforce and grip right from 0mph. The 1000bhp electric powertrain, offers selectable performance drive modes from GT3 to F1 and Indycar levels pace.
The next driving demonstration will be back at Laguna Seca during the Monterey Motorsports Reunion on is on Saturday 17th August at 11.50-12.00. Two cars will take to the track piloted by McMurtry Managing Director Thomas Yates, and experienced historic racer, Philip Kadoorie, to show that this seemingly unattainable performance level is still accessible by normal driving enthusiasts.
Thomas Yates, Managing Director of McMurtry Automotive, said “The Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb has been such an enjoyable way to showcase the cars in motion for the first time ever on US soil. The level of excitement from everyone here at Laguna Seca has made it very memorable. You’ll be seeing plenty more of McMurtry in the US over the coming years.”FASTEST LAP EVER by over 4 seconds at ‘home circuit’ Castle Combe, with McMurtry Spéirling PURE VP1McMurtry Automotive2024-08-08 | The FASTEST LAP EVER of our 'home circuit' Castle Combe with the McMurtry Spéirling PURE VP1 driven by Max Chilton.

McMurtry Spéirlings Niche Advanced Battery Cells - High Power and Capacity: MOLICEL!McMurtry Automotive2022-07-22 | The Spéirling's battery pack is engineered and built by the McMurtry team in the UK using over 6,000 P26A cylindrical lithium ion cells from Molicel. The Goodwood edition car that broke the outright record had a 60 kWh capacity battery.
The key requirements for the cells are high power, low impedance and fast charge/discharge.
One benefit of a low impedance Molicel cell is a comparatively small temperature increase during high current drain therefore thermal design at pack system level can be simplified, making the resulting battery pack smaller and lighter.
"The battery pack is a defining element of our unique car concept. The cell capability within that has a first order effect on the mass and packaging volume of the entire car, plus the obvious power output to the drive motors. Therefore, in the heart of our car, we are leaving no stone unturned to deliver a power dense, compact and lightweight battery. The Molicel cells have delivered a competitive advantage in achieving these aims and they have been powered the novel performance that the world has just witnessed at Goodwood. I’m also looking forward to integrating the next generation of Molicel cells into our future products" Thomas Yates, Founding Director, McMurtry Automotive

All eyes on the McMurtry Spéirling and Max Chilton.
Two records to beat: 1. The unofficial outright record in any session set by the VW IDR in 39.90s in 2019. 2. The official hillclimb record in the Sunday Shootout set by Nick Heidfeld in an McLaren Formula One car in 1999 at 41.60s.
As the Red Arrows hogged the live video feed, Max stealthily flew by in the morning practice, claiming a new OUTRIGHT record of 39.14s. It was quite surreal as McMurtry staff were going crazy celebrating, but the crowd didn't realise why.

They will all have unrivalled performance by focusing on dynamic agility though lightweight design, innovate packaging and system integration, aerodynamic excellence, and powertrain efficacy.
The McMurtry Spéirling is an exclusive, collectible world beating track special to demonstrate cutting edge technology in its most extreme form. It will be pursuing potent performance records over the next two years, in the UK and abroad.
Designed from a clean sheet, this car delivers a step change in speed, range & circuit performance by focusing on reducing drag & weight and having downforce-on-demand from an onboard fan system.
It achieves dynamic excellence by having a bespoke battery and powertrain integrated into custom carbon fibre monocoque with semi-active suspension, slick tyres and nostalgically compact dimensions.
It is a single seat, closed cockpit, closed wheel car capable of accommodating drivers up to 6ft 7" (2m) tall at over 200mph.
