3D Animation Internships 2023-01-05 | Was going to wait a little bit to share work - didn’t want to spoil. But this shot was in the trailer, so..😅 -hope you enjoy!

3: Early development test. Used Houdini’s vellum solver. The membrane felt too flimsy, like a parachute.

4: So along with other adjustments, I painted this map. The painted areas retained their shape better. Didn’t want to lose rounded bumpy shapes.

5: The result.

6: Here, I just wanted more variation in the torn-off pieces.

7: First render test. Added some goopy stuff on the areas that gets torn. Colored it purple by mistake. Notice also that Layout pulled the camera back so the ship doesn’t leave screen anymore. These kinds of late small adjustments are made all the time. We want the best composition!

8: This is the render the Directors approved.

9: The final shot, again, out of Lighting. Always appreciate how Lighters plus every shot!!

3D Animation Internships 2023-01-04 | A bit of process for one of my frozen 2 shots ✨ ❄️
final - refrence - blocking - polish
This one didn't change a whole lot from my first blocking pass, but i changed Anna's reaction at the end to try and make it a little funnier and feminine with her hand coming up to her chest.
There wasn't a dress in the reference room so i fashioned a cape that was in there as a skirt which allowed me to hold it as she went down the stairs.
Also when you're shooting reference it can be useful to know where you should be looking if there is another character so since there was also no Sven in the ref room, i drew some eyes and a mouth and stuck them to a pillow which was atop a fan (?) for the height. Sometimes you just gotta improvise 😆
Michael Woodside ended up animating the boy and
father that Anna is waving to as he was supervising the crowds team at the time. The other charcaters were done by the crowds dept, and the rest of the team handled the hair, cloth, and lighting!

3D Animation Internships 2022-12-29 | Taking a break on my inktobers so I’ll share the first and only shot of Angry Heihei on Moana that we animated before turning him into Dumb Heihei! And as it turns out, he’s scared (not angry) in this shot because he was smart enough to know Maui wanted to eat him.
I animated this and finished it, and then immediately found out we were re-working him 😩 So this is the final version followed by my first blocking version. And a point of trivia, the boat snack shot was (other than the fish short) the only shot I animated of Maui! Good memories.

3D Animation Internships 2022-12-22 | In this video, we're going to be working on a prep and landing shot progression! This is a really common shot in motion graphics and it's a great way to show off your skills.

First, we're going to start with a basic prep and landing shot. After that, we'll add some motion effects to make the shot look more realistic. Finally, we'll add some finishing touches to the shot to make it look really polished! This is a great progression to work on if you're looking to improve your animation skills. Thanks for watching!

3D Animation Internships 2022-11-05 | Wreck it Ralph was 10 years ago!! This is my favourite shot that I worked on the movie. I tried to capture Sara Silverman's cocky , over-confident expressions. By drawing her caricature I started to get the 'feel' for her facial expressions and tried to apply it to Vanellope.It took me a bunch of tries and a lot of help from the sups to get the timing and the energy of her performance just right.

3D Animation Internships 2022-11-04 | This was my first assignment 10 years ago for Wreck it Ralph! It was a marketing piece that I blocked in, but I got rolled onto shot production so I think someone else finished it. I liked playing with the idea that fix it Felix would bounce around as he moved, sort of like how the Ninja Turtles did in the original TMNT NES game. Ultimately we went a different direction and played him more simple in the film. To mock-up the different letters, I pushed the geometry of the words under the ground plane and reassembled them for each title card, planning on the effects department to do it correctly later. Crazy to think this was a decade ago, but somehow, it feels longer?

3D Animation Internships 2022-11-04 | A bit of process for one of my frozen 2 shots ✨ ❄️
final - refrence - blocking - polish
This one didn't change a whole lot from my first blocking pass, but i changed Anna's reaction at the end to try and make it a little funnier and feminine with her hand coming up to her chest.
There wasn't a dress in the reference room so i fashioned a cape that was in there as a skirt which allowed me to hold it as she went down the stairs.
Also when you're shooting reference it can be useful to know where you should be looking if there is another character so since there was also no Sven in the ref room, i drew some eyes and a mouth and stuck them to a pillow which was atop a fan (?) for the height. Sometimes you just gotta improvise 😆
Michael Woodside ended up animating the boy and
father that Anna is waving to as he was supervising the crowds team at the time. The other charcaters were done by the crowds dept, and the rest of the team handled the hair, cloth, and lighting!

Moana Heihei and Pu Animation Test #shorts #youtubeshorts #viral #trending #trend #trendingshorts

3D Animation Internships 2022-11-04 | This is a (sort of) never-seen-before Animation Performance Test with Pua and Heihei! In early versions of the film, Heihei was an aggressive and angry rooster, and we wanted to contrast his crankiness with Pua’s innocence for comedy. So I did this test to see how that dynamic could work.
Heihei is decidedly more “rooster-like” in this iteration, complete with isolated head and fast, twitchy, direct movement. We played him severe and mean to sell the contrast as much as we could.

We observed a lot of chicken behavior and part of me is sad none of that made it into the final film. The rest of me is happy we eventually got to make Heihei the dumbest chicken in the world.

3D Animation Internships 2022-10-26 | Early on in the show, we were tasked to do a small test animation to help familiarize ourselves with the characters/rigs as well as the style of the show. We only had a week to do our test, we called it, "Heist Week". Everyone did some really fun, expressive, and over-the-top tests. They really helped us discover and explore what the style ultimately became.

For my test, I chose Police Chief. I absolutely loved her design and felt she was such an expressive and fun character. Looking back I could have taken this shot much, much further and wish I had more time to clean it up but this is where I finished with it and I had a blast doing it.

3D Animation Internships 2022-10-21 | When Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana hit screens in 2016, it immediately connected with audiences of all ages. Directors Ron Clements and John Musker had found a story rich in Polynesian culture that was also daring, funny, dramatic and powerful.

Moana, which follows the ambitious plans of the titular young girl (voiced by Auli'i Cravalho) who leaves her island paradise in search of the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) to help her in her quest to save her people, was heavily praised for its 3D animation and effects. Much of the film is set on the ocean, an environment that would need to be simulated in high detail - all the way from calm seas to more powerful storms, and even to appear as a watery character.

3D Animation Internships 2022-10-18 | Here’s a little bit of process work from Moana! ✨
Back when I was on my first film at Disney as an apprentice animator i got the chance to do a few marketing shots. This one was a simple one where i didn’t shoot any reference. The marketing pitch i got was a single image and they needed the characters to lean into frame, which would be used as an overlay to any kind of video they had. I did a quick 2d pass to give myself something to work off of, and went straight into splines to work with the feeling of the motion rather than following live action footage.
Marketing can be really fun because there often isn’t a completely set idea and as an animator you can put on your directors hat and pitch ideas to the directors..
