linolafettatnetHello there, this is a break down of my workflow for the "one hour of greeble" images. It is a recording of a live workshop session done at the Blender Conference 2022. In this video i explain how to create huge sci fi greeble scenes quickly and show how to manage them efficiently.
A huge thanks to the Blender Foundation to give me an opportunity to have a talk at the Blender Conference. It was an incredible experience.

I will talk about light, colours and space ships ;)
We had slight technical issues, but thanks to a member of the audience, we could start the tutorial on his laptop, thanks again! Please excuse the slightly slower render performance, i tried my best to convey the principles with the limited performance.

In this tutorial i show you the "Vectorscope" and a very simple example on how to use it to tweak a imperfect colour contrast and improve your light setup! How to create a circular array - Quick Blender tutoriallinolafettatnet2024-01-25 | Did you struggle to create circular arrays in Blender? If you like to support me and get the files, stop by my Patreon page. patreon.com/LinoThomas
Here is a quick tutorial on how to create a circular symmetry or radial array in Blender. Don't be scared of using geometry nodes, they are really useful and by packaging up the project into an asset, its really a thing you have to do only once :)
Instead of only using the geometry as an input, you can also use collections to create even crazier arrays! How to create reflectors - 60 second Blender tutoriallinolafettatnet2024-01-18 | Ever wondered how you can create retro reflective surfaces in Blender? If you like to support me and get the files, stop by my Patreon page. patreon.com/LinoThomas
In this super short tutorial i explain how to use a dense volume to reflect light back to the light source! Useful to create cat eye reflectors which are used on roads or clothing. How to create hot glowing metal - Quick Blender tutoriallinolafettatnet2024-01-11 | A reusable material to make your assets glow like hot metal! If you like to support me and get the files, stop by my Patreon page.https://www.patreon.com/LinoThomas
I am introducing you to the "blackbody" node which will make the heat glow in the right colour! Additionally i show how to create a mask for the effect by using the ambient occlusion shader as well as on how to make it reusable as an asset for other projects. How to create night vision goggles - Quick Blender tutoriallinolafettatnet2024-01-04 | A bit longer this time but full of tricks! If you like to support me and get the files, stop by my Patreon page. patreon.com/LinoThomas
The entire trick revolves around boosting only the green colours through a refraction shader. It will filler out pure red or pure blue light, therefore never fully saturate your light sources for this trick to work with them.
Here is my entry for the “Endless engines” challenge of clint (pwnisher). The competition contains a basic template animation which you have to exchange with your own assets. Artstation link: artstation.com/artwork/qe990P
My approach to the challenge: As i like space ships, i was thinking about making one. As fighters and similar types are all well known and done to death, i though of a different role - a lifeboat. So collecting references and resources was on the plan and after a bit i had an idea how to make a spaceship look like a rescue boat. I mix elements from coastguard boats and the ISS. Makes total sense, i know. To create the scene i use just assets i have created in the past, the boat is of course now a fresh creation. There is no third party kitbash in the scene. The only paid addon is “flared” for the lovely lensflare. Learned some new things in the artwork, first time spending more time animating things (thanks Christian for the help) and experimenting more with simlation of VFX. Created in Blender 3.4 Rendered with Cycles on a 3060 @512-2k samples per frame ~10min each. How to change the colour of the Chromatic Aberrations - 60 second Blender tutoriallinolafettatnet2020-11-29 | If you are bored by the default blue/red hues of the distortion node, here is a way to colour it differently.
Pro tip: Never overdo the Chromatic Aberrations effect, keep it subtle to not have your images scream "CG!" ;)How to create fake light cones - 60 second Blender tutoriallinolafettatnet2020-03-22 | Sometimes volumetrics are too slow for the result you are going for, in this tutorial i show you how to create fake volumetric light cones for a much quicker rendering. How to make it work in EEVEE: Change the cone materials blend mode to "alpha blend" and add a color ramp node after the subtract node. Thanks to "Justin" to suggest this change!
Important: In the "light paths" tab you can find the "max bounces" settings. Do increase the "max bounces" number if any black areas appear when using many light cones.
Pro tip: These light cones render noise free with only one sample. You can render them on a separate render layer and add them in the compositor to save even more render time ;)How to get that space look - 60 second Blender tutoriallinolafettatnet2020-02-09 | A quick run down on how i light up and composite (super reduced node setup though) my space renderings.
Please use "medium high contrast"- I did say it right but captured it incorrectly in the video, sorry for that!
Make sure your albedo values of your surfaces are roughly where they should be (white paper has a value of ~0.65, there should not be a lot in you scene which is brighter), otherwise your result will be a completely white image.

Other channels can stay untouched and the image retains more detail that way.
At the end you can also group the denoising setup to use it in other files, too :)
