This video is pretty different to my usual, but it’s on a subject close to my heart – I’ve campaigned against airport expansion for years, and spent 18 months working on a postdoc about the effects of aircraft aerosol on cirrus ice clouds.
So here, I'm landing myself in the hotseat to talk about the science behind the other impacts of aviation, and the reasons we should work together to oppose airport expansion.

New work by my colleague Pete Tuckett shows that meltwater is collecting in surface ponds and lakes around the East Antarctic, and that this region has become more prone to melting in the last few years. In this video, I speak to the lead author to find out what this means, and whether we ought to be worried about the "sleeping giant" of East Antarctica.

2) Density of fresh snow 450 kg m-3
3) Mean melt flux (~ 2 W m-2) sustained consistently throughout event and across area.
4) Surface temperature at melting point throughout
2 W m-2 = 2 J s * m-2
Energy required to melt 1 kg of snow with density 450 kg m-3:
334000 J kg-1 * 450 kg m-3 = 150,300,000 J m-3
150,300,000 J m-3 / 2 J s * m-2 = 75,150,000 s to melt 1 m surface snow
75,150,000 s / 3,600 s hr-1 = 20,875 hours to melt 1 m surface snow
= 2.38 years
Equivalent at 200 W /m2 = 8.7 days to melt a whole m of surface snow

A sobering new report shows that warming of 2 degrees above pre-industrial temperatures will spell disaster for the world’s frozen cryosphere. But as the world’s leaders meet in Dubai to discuss climate action, it’s clear there’s a huge gap between what needs to happen, and what countries are committed to delivering.
In this video, I meet Dr James Kirkham, Chief Scientific Advisor for the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative, who is working hard to translate the science in this report into real-world policy.
