It's been a long and at times difficult process, filled with many obstacles and breakthroughs. The development of Sapiens has changed my life. The game is really starting to come together with lots of refinements in the gameplay and UI. Finally the game has gone out to the very first few testers, and it's great to be getting some feedback. This time I focussed on AI, getting the sapiens to find comfortable places to sit when they want a rest, and looking at things of interest. They also have basic multitasking, allowing them to wave at each other while walking or sitting. I also added flint, and rich and poor soil types.

This time I've been focused on terrain, how you command up orders to dig, fill and clear areas, and how you choose what type of earth you want to fill with. This time the focus has been on a new mini-map radar view for selecting multiple objects. I've also started working on individual personalities, variations in the motivations and behaviors for nomad tribes, and the ability to recruit nomads and talk (well wave, really) them into joining your tribe.

I've had a nice break, but it's time to get back to work and I've started adding nomadic tribes which pass through the area. I've also added Ambient Occlusion. SSAO is a nice effect which adds soft shadows around objects and helps bring the world to life. And lastly I have started experimenting with weather, and how the world changes on a cloudy/rainy day.

This week I tried to pull back on the rate at which I record videos, but failed miserably so here is another one! I've been focusing on UI, and in this video I take a look behind the scenes and show some UI code along with how I use Lua to put my UI together using C++ under the hood. With a continued focus on gameplay, this week I worked on the relationship system, and the re-addition of pregnancy and sapien life stages. As a result it is now finally possible to actually grow your tribe and create more sapiens. This is enough of a goal that the game is actually fun to play now, and it marks the beginning of the transition to playtest driven development.

Farming is the next feature I want to work on, but for the planting, growing, fruiting, and harvesting cycles to make any sense, I needed to add seasons. It went really well and the new varying seasons make the world feel a whole lot more dynamic and realistic.

In this video I show the new map mode that allows quick zooming between space and your sapiens on the ground. The global map is also now used to locate a starting location and tribe for the game. Rivers can be a bit of a problem with procedural terrain, so instead of trying to calculate rivers on top of perlin noise based terrain, I've instead started with the rivers and built the terrain up from there. I also have a whole new world creation menu where you can see a preview of the globe, and customize it before you start a game.

Children are now in the game! Along with children came aging, and the idea of families & relationships, which adds more of a sense of realism and progression to the game. I've worked a lot on the sapien character models, adding more variation. Sapien skin tone and hair color now varies a little within tribes, and more so as you travel longer distance. I've also added the concept of genes to carry those traits from parents to children.

I decided if I was going to support Virtual Reality, then now was the time to make it work. It's amazing being in this world in VR, and I know people are going to love it. In this video I show how it all works, and explain the process I went through to add VR support to my engine and the game.

Over the past few weeks I've been mostly working on pathfinding. The sapiens will now avoid obstacles like trees or walls, find their way through narrow gaps like doorways or corridors, and can even walk up planks and find their way around a maze of floating platforms in 3D space. This is all done using A* pathfinding and a procedurally created navmesh.
I've also been thinking about language. When the sapiens communicate with each other, it's looking likely that I'll be using the constructed language Toki Pona. In this video I show the new AI where they actually think individually and react to what is in their field of vision, including a lot of awkward hand waving. The game has now finally hit that elusive buttery smooth 60FPS, and I explain what it took to get there. The water has seen some more improvements yet again, and the new stockpiles are fully functional.

You can now clear the grass away and build hay beds, which eventually your sapiens will be able to sleep in. There are also changes to the digging, building and snapping mechanics, and a number of improvements to the renderer and game engine.

The cavemen can build themselves little houses now, and find their ways around holes in the ground. There’s also a new way of generating rivers, much faster terrain generation and a bunch of other little tweaks and fixes.
