BMX Belt Grinder - Stupid Quick Make
Bikes are so good...so many possibilities.
who would have known that a 50mm x 1525mm [2"x60"] grinding belt would fit the wheel perfectly!
let out the air, fit the belt over the tyre and pump up for a nice snug fit.
Bolt the BMX frame together, stand on end, add a foot pedal from an old front forks, fix on an old long spring and you have a foot powered BMX belt grinder...and a little bit of welding to make the rest fitted to the seat post.
works really nicely and can even work in a power cut!

Lathe Belt Grinder - Stupid Quick Make
Hey I don't need to grind knives though I like to think that maybe I will if I had a belt grinder...I am not going to afford to buy one and have no space in my tiny workshop.
A small workshop has to work hard so use the spinning ability of a lathe to power a belt grinder...throw together some scraps of ply and hang it from the ceiling...it works really well...I can now make pointy things!

I-Beam Forge - Stupid Quick Make
I am a woodworker though I did a one day give blacksmithing a go experience...it is fantastic when metal becomes soft and bendable...I need a forge...only for occasional use and the rest of time it can be a BBQ!

So I saw a tenon saw attachment that Ishitani Furniture has on the side of his planner...Ever since seeing it I have wanted one.
An old tree muncher was perfect to make a tenon saw machine...it is all it does though it cuts them perfectly every time.

Moxon Vice - Stupid Quick Make
Does the internet really need another Moxon Vice [vise for our North American friends] you know those ones that cramp to the worktop and are used for cutting dovetails and the like...the maker scene is awash with them!
Not really!...though I met a maker at Makers Cenrtral last year and he gave me the solution that I had been looking for on where to get the course threaded bars for as cheap as possible...get hold of an old weight lifting bar...cut off the ends and perfect for the Moxon Vice.
Try your recycling centre or your shed!

A timber, metal and plastic box with a skull motif on each face, made with a unique 'stick of rock' technique.
My project as part of the Maker Box Challenge made for @simply_orn8 who sent me the box of off cut materials for me to create with.
Why not take part yourself...box up off cuts of your favourite materials and send them off to a maker friend and challenge them to make something with it...maybe you will receive a great object back at the end.
My box is on its way to @badgersworkshop, really look forward to seeing what he makes with his box of potential.
The Evolution table saw R255MTS was put through its paces in the making of this project, it would have been harder to have made without it. Big thanks Evolution Power Tools.

A chess piece made for the Makers Central chess piece challenge...turned on a bandsaw!
Makers Central show - NED - Birmingham UK - 5-6th May 2018...the first big makers meet up in the UK with loads of YouTube makers turning up...and 32 of them turning [or carving] a chess piece for a chess set that will be auctioned off for charity.
The challenge was for any material, any colour! and about 35mm in diameter.
How about a chequered pattern to the pawn...is it white or is it black?
Cut, glued, cut and glued a block up into a chequered block.
Made a a jig to spin the block with a cordless drill...made two identical templates of the piece that I wanted to turn and glued to a bandsaw sled.
Nail two guide pins into the turning jig and spin the block with the drill carefully reducing the block of wood following the shape of the template.
Take it slowly and keep hands out of the way...and the chess piece shape takes shape.
Spin the shape and sand to a nice finish.
Cut off the pin...and drill a hole in the neck of the pawn...for a snug fit of the head.
Sand down a piece of each of the timbers, maple [white] and walnut [black] and glue together...cut and sand into a disc...drill a hole in the middle and place between the body and head of the chess piece...which ever colour points upwards denotes the colour of the chess piece.
Spray stencil my makers mark on the bottom so that the winner of the set knows who made which piece and finish with some wax...
...make a little packing case with left over stripy wood and carefully pack inside with some of the shavings and a little concertina booklet.
All done to join the rest of the set...super excited to see the whole set together.

Big thanks to Evolution Power Tools as they kindly sent me their new sliding mitre saw and asked what I could do with it...
...grab some off cuts of timber and pieces of steel and lets put the machine to the test.
Apart from providing me with the saw Evolution Tools have not paid for the video and my use and reaction was to see what it could do. I admit that I already own one of their hand held circular saws and I really like it, great littlesaw and as with all of their saws it can cut both timber and metal...and plastic, which is super handy.
I hope that you will agree that the saw was up to the challenge of making a cool coffee table that has the unusual use of steel breadboards and rebar shelf.
It cut all with ease and accuracy and I really like the depth stop feature that allows for easy trenching.
Steel and timber...I know...shrinkage!
Yes the timber has had a little shrinkage since making the coffee table and the steel is slightly proud...this I will re-sand in a week or two when the timber has stabilised. The glued up timber top has stayed stable as the Gorilla Glue has allowed sufficient movement between the timber and metal parts.
Really happy with the results...now where is my coffee!

A simple wooden storage box with splines to keep it all together, made from a scaffold board.
Putting my Evolution Tools circular saw through its paces. It can cut both timber and metal at the same time...never again worry about blunting the blade and no kick back.
Make up a simple spline cutting jig and cut the spline slots with the circular saw.
Glue all together and clean up.
Cut off the lid from the box.
Braze the cut scaffold board metal ends into one long strip and form to the inner shape of the box.
Use Gorilla Glue that sticks metal to wood to glue the metal strip to the lid...this will keep the lid in place.
Cut some finger pulls on the edge...
...and all ready to store stuff...
...like a circular saw that shouldn't be able to fit! Every workshop needs a Mary Poppins moment!

Mini branding iron made from a wire nail, easy to make and great to use.
Uses a wire nail something about 125mm with a nice sized flat head.
Hammer the nail into the end of a piece of wood...this will become the handle.
Cut out a design from sticky backed vinyl and stick on the end of the nail.

Etch your design onto the nail head...remove the vinyl and black gunk.
Use files or a rotary tool to grind away the excess metal to allow the branding to give the best results.
Cut the piece of wood to length and form a comfortable handle.
Heat up the end of your wire nail branding iron and brand your, great results are easy to achieve.

A super easy welding project to make a metal version of a paper light lantern.
Cut and weld lengths of 4mm steel rod to form the lines of the lantern.
Grind welds to a nice finish.
Spray the frame to a colour of your choice...
...and fill up with a string of LED tree lights.
Hang up and enjoy!

A super easy welding table that works well and is cheap to make.
Get an old radiator place it on some blocks, grind the surface to bare metal...and it is ready!
I am very new to welding and I needed a welding table though I didnt want to spend much money. Also I have restricted space and I wanted it to be easily put up and taken down.
Concrete blocks work well for a base though look clunky...
,,,so a great first welding project is to make some leg frames from reinforcing bar, sprayed up poked through some drilled holes in the radiator and a couple of old scaffold boards as a bottom shelf and as spreaders to keep the structure tight.
Clamp on your earth, crank up the welder and get to do dome hot metal glueing!

As a compliment to the previous barrel bolt video, these window latches and stays are inspired by the simple window latches found in traditional Scandinavian buildings.
Two latches per hinged sash that click in place to hold the window tightly shut.
Made from 4mm steel rod, bent with a mini metal bender, back plates made with some more rod and flat bar, welded together.
A wire nail acts as a retainer on the window frame.
The finger pull snaps into place onto the retainer and the sprung nature of the design holds firm.
The window stay similar in design with steel 4mm rod and flat plate retainer.
All finished with clear coat to help stop rusting.
These window latches are super simple, effective and easy to make.

The barrel bolt is cheap to buy though just sometimes a project needs something a little more special.
A recent garden room project required for some bespoke window and door furniture.
A pair of steel barrel bolts for the door and a large through door bolt for padlocking shut.
All finish with clear lacquer .
Looks great...get out your welder and get making!

A really simple BOOM BOX for my workshop.
My digital radio speakers stopped working though an external speaker could be plugged into the earphone jack.
A friend gave me an old PC speaker combo with a good sub woofer and two smaller speakers and a nice inbuilt amp.
Put them together in a strong ply box.
Cover with thin ply to hide away the speakers so that they cant get all dusty.
Paint up with some graphics.
Fit to the wall and use the top as a shelf.

I put a roll of tape into my one handed tape dispenser the wrong way around by mistake...and it works even better!
Who would have known that by putting tape the sticky side up that it is even easier to grab onto the end...just tap a finger onto the sticky tape and instant grab pull and tear.

I was inspired by Adam Savage and Laura Kampf's one day build to make a tape dispenser that could hold three rolls of tape and to tear off the tape with one hand, the project was also to allow the tapes to removed with one hand. And easily carried around the workshop.
As Laura Kampf explained there are many times when making a project that you just need a piece of tape whilst holding onto the workpiece with your other hand!
They also wanted to achieve to be able to load up the dispenser one handed...which unfortunately they didn't succeed to do.
Whilst watching their video I started sketching and came up with a different solution that achieves all of the one handiness including loading up the dispenser.
The tapes slot into troughs within a laminated ply dispenser, bearings are set into the troughs to allow the tapes to run smoothly.
The ply is pinned together with threaded rod that go through the bearings.
Sprung ply arms keep the rolls of tape in place and stop them pulling out.
An offcut of a bandsaw blade is used to cut the tape to length.
In the video I pretend that I am pulling the bandsaw blade out of the machine for visual effect. In no way am I suggesting to grab bandsaw blades and do not do it when the machine is running, you will loose fingers with these machines.
I am surprised how useful this one handed tape dispenser has been in the workshop and I would like to thank Adam Savage, the Tested team and Laura Kampf for the inspiration.

Super simple to make vehicle key safe for safely padlocking the keys to the underside of the vehicle so you can go off surfing, walking, canoeing....
Having a newish vehicle means having a door unlocking key with water phobic insides...no more tucking the key inside the wetsuit when surfing.
I had an old steel bike frame, already cut up from making the bike maintenance stand project...
...the key and fob fitted inside with room to spare.
cut of a rough length of the bike tube, grind off the paint...
...hammer one end flat leaving the corners with holes for any potential water to drain out in use...
...weld the join together or pop rivet closed to form a secure box.
trim the open end to length, drill a hole right through big enough for the shackle of a padlock and file to a nice finish.
Add some cool graphics and spray with your own colour choice, peel of the stencils to reveal the shiny metal beneath.
Spray all with clear lacquer so the metal dose not rust.
Go to your favourite surf beach, pop the keys into the vehicle key safe, attach a long shackle combination lock through the hole and snap lock to the underside of the vehicle...
...go surfing in the knowledge that your vehicle is safe.
I am a complete beginner at surfing though I love it and the Cornish beaches are such a great place to play in the waves.

In this client project i make a solid oak bench to sit alongside the Shoe Store project for putting on shoes.
Made with big mitred corners with walnut splines to help strengthen the joints...and to look good.
A very simple looking bench that belies the amount of work and skill level to achieve perfect mitres to the large thickness timber.
Finished with hardwax oil for a tough water resistant finish...
...looks great in the clients home.

Follow the build and fitting of a unique shoe storage cupboard for one of my clients.
The brief was to provide a shoe store by the front door for visitors shoes, out of the way visually and from their great dog who really likes to chew shoes...as I found out!
The shoe store is to replace an already existing fitted open shelf unit.
Due to the lack of depth I devised it for shoes to be hung on simple turned oak pegs or larger boots or more delicate footware can be placed on the floor of the store.
As the shoe store is located beside the stair I wanted a set of sliding doors and came up with maybe a unique solution of a 'train' of sliding doors that all slide together both opening and closing.
I was unable to find a latch that would achieve this and so built my own with the use of magnets to attach the doors together and a simple sprung latch to release the magnets.
the way the doors slides add a little bit of theatre to the public entrance of the home.
With great thanks to the clients for the opportunity to build this truly unique shoe store for them and in allowing me to release the video of the making of it onto my YouTube channel for all to watch.
Great creativity needs great clients.

Make a FIDGET LIGHT!
I had a bicycle rear wheel hub left over from my Softbox light project...check the video out to see more youtube.com/watch?v=W2gIiQ4xCM4
The wheel hub was kicking around the workshop though I would play with it, it looks so cool and I loved twisting the cassette hub to hear it click...
...I wonder if it could be made into a Fidget light?
Get a piece of steel rod as an armature for the light...
...drill a hole in the hub for the rod and glue in place with epoxy glue.
Thread some lighting wire through the wheel hub and safely wire up to a threaded lamp holder...screw this to the hub.
Paint the wire black...add a nut on the end and glue the wire in place.
Get a vintage laboratory stand and fix the fidget light to the stand...
...find your favourite place...
Switch on...and FIDGET!
You don't have a vintage lab stand to hand?
Get some threaded rod, drill a hole for the fidget light armature to slide through...
...clamp in a pillar drill vice...
...for a funky industrial design look...
OR get a nice plank of wood...plane flat and sand and oil...
...drill a hole and thread the threaded bolt into the wood...slide on the fidget light...COOL
BUT I WANT IT ON THE WALL...
Make a circle of ply with a bandsaw circle cutting sled...
Drill out a hole...stencil some cool graphics...
...pop in a bearing...
...play with your new fidget spinner...
...drill a hole in the wall...
...and fit the fidget light and spinner in the hole for a super cool wall mounted fidget light / fidget spinner combo.

Easy to make Softbox light for photography or a cool ambient light for the home.
I had one old road bike wheel kicking about and it seemed perfect for making a super thin Softbox light.
A Softbox light is usually used for photography to add a nice diffused light to portraits or photos of objects. They also look cool attached to a tripod in the corner of a room in the home and add a nice ambient light.
Remove all of the spokes and the hub from the wheel.
Make the front diffuser from some white lycra material that stretches in both directions.
Mark out the circle, cut and sew some elastic around the edge so that it fits the wheel tautly.
Cut out two circles from thick card one black, one white. Cut a 40mm rim from the white circle to act as a light baffle.
Attach a tripod mount to the rim through the valve hole.
Fit a LED strip light to the inside of the wheel rim.
Glue on scrunched up roasting foil to the inside face of the large cardboard circle. Helps to diffuse the light.
Glue both the cardboard circle and the light baffle to the wheel.
Fit the white fabric diffuser.
Re fit the tyre to finish the edge.
Wire the LED strip to the transformer.
Fit to a tripod and...
...switch on....
...use and enjoy!

Pricklysauce needs a light box sign!
I was inspired by many other YouTube makers to make a funky light box that would show of my pricklysauce logo to its best.
My logo is circular and needed to have a circular box...
I took off the wheels to an old knackered kids bicycle, removed the tyres and central spindles...
...and bolted them together to make the former of my box.
Cut up enough strips of thick cardboard to wrap around the bike wheel former three times...
...use masking tape and PVA glue to stick it into a solid circular shape.
Add some thinner strips to the inside to form a lip for the front plastic to sit against and to shield the LED lights to give a soft glow.
Cut a ply back board and make a French cleat for the hanger.
Cut out a circular piece of clear plastic to fit the light box front.
Design your logo, mine I made and resized on Illustrator and cut out on my Silhouette Cameo vinyl cutter.
Spray mount the logo upside down on the back side of the plastic and peel off the parts that need spraying.
Choose your colour and spray paint.
Remove the stencil and leave to dry.
Spray paint over it all with white to make the logo.
Drill a hole in the bottom of the light box and stick a LED strip to the inside.
I wonder....will a cordless drill battery light up the strip?
WOW!
Make up a ply holster for the battery and make two metal connectors to plug into the battery positive and negative terminals.
Paint it black and connect the wires and fit to the light box...it is now cordless battery powered!.
Chose your favourite location for the light box sign and fix the French cleat...
...hang the funky light box sign...
...remove the battery from the cordless drill and it in...
...stand back and admire!

In this video I show you how to make a big dovetailed tool box.
I decided that I needed to sort out my hand tools in my workshop and I had a few rough sawn scaffold boards left over from the Scaffold Board Shed project [watch it here - youtu.be/ayeNV4fqFiM]
The tool box was to be strong and utilitarian to take all the knocks of a workshop and to be able to be moved around if needed.
Cut up the boards to rough length and biscuit, glue + clamp the boards together for two sides, top, bottom + back panels.
When dry, cut panels over length by 10mm.
Make a dovetail cutting jig for the use of a power saw.
Set the saw blade to the dovetail 1:6 ratio angle.
Mark out the dovetails along the panels and set the depth of the saw to the thickness of the panels plus 5mm [half of the 10mm additional length]
Make the cuts for all of the dovetail tails.
Clamp a straight edge and use a plunge biscuit cutter power tool to accurately cut the shoulders.
Turn over and do the same on the other side as the biscuit cutter can only cut half way through.
Finally use a hand saw to make the final cuts into the corners.
Use these panels to mark out the corresponding pins, set the saw blade to 90 degrees and the jig to the 1:6 ratio and cut all of the pins.
Use the biscuit cutter and hand saw as before to cut out the waste.
Big heavy lump hammer to bash them all together with some glue, check corners for square and clamp.
Mark out the dovetails on the rear panel, and cut as before.
Place on the dried carcass and mark the pins and cut as well.
Big hammer and glue to get it all together.
Now you have a heavy and very strong box for tools.
Make some drawers.
The top drawer is designed with a flap down front so when in use I can access the most used tools directly without having to have the drawer pulled fully open.
Simply ply base and rough cut sides and back, glued and screwed together.
Fit some fully extending drawer runners and fit to the box.
Make the other three drawers same though with fixed fronts, bottom two drawers are deeper for bigger tools!
Fit with runners and fit to the box.
Now for some heavy duty funky handles made from old mountain bike knobby tires [tyres].
Cut off the rims and cut four lengths.
Glue the walls together with some silicone adhesive and clamp until dry.
Fix to the drawer fronts with nuts, bolts and washers.
They work really well and are comfy to the touch.
A last finishing touch to add some cool graphics, make a paper stencil and spray a big 'TOOL' up the front and a nice hidden logo on the drop down top drawer front.
Fill the tool box up with tools to give a tidy workshop and every tool that you need to use, just where it should be...to hand.

Sometimes it is better to not throw away those old ring binder folders...instead make a special workshop clamp...
...I will show you how to in this special workshop clamp how to make video.
Rip out the ringer binder from the cardboard cover.
Cut a couple of strips of thin ply, plane and sand the edges...
...tape together to keep in line and clamp within the teeth of the ring binder.
Push down hard to mark the positions.
Mark the positions with a punch or pencil and drill out holes for a snug fit.
Fit the ply strips onto the ring binder prongs and glue in place with some two part epoxy glue.
Screw the new Special Workshop Clamp to the bottom of a shelf...
...and you now have a super easy and quick to make workshop clamp to hold your project drawings just where you need them.
It really is that simple!

I had a little project for a client to repair the timber base of a chair, one of the legs was split and so the chair was unusable.
A new tapered timber leg needed to be turned to match...
...roughing the timber to size I needed to make sure the taper was exactly as the original and I needed a set of external calipers...
...which I didn't have...
...don't have a tool...make a tool!
Two 125mm wire nails would make a great set of calipers.
Bend the ends in ...
...heat the nail heads and hammer flat...
...drill a pivot hole for a bolt...
...solder the bolt in position...
...and make a finger tightening wingnut from a nut and a washer with a cut out...
...braze together...clean up...
...and use.
The leg was turned to a perfect size and shape...
...glued in place the chair base was as good as new.
And I end up with a happy client and a new tool!

I have a project with my son to build him a mountain bike from an old frame, donated second hand parts and some high tech new bits...
...now al we need is a bike stand...to build it on.
Our neighbour very kindly gave my son an old bike stand head, though what to do for the stand..
..an old steel framed bike was slowly rusting in the garden...
...strip it down to a bare frame...
...cut off the front half...
...weld the handle bar to the rear half...
...bolt the front forks into the seat post tube...
...spray up and we have a new stand.
Just weld a threaded bar tot he back of the bike clamp bracket and attach to the upturned front forks...
...and clamp your bike for a great secure bike stand...
...look cool too!

Only a small piece of 1.5mm mild steel sheet is required.
Only basic tools are used to make this tool, general metal working tools, rotary power tool, scroll saw converted to use a metal blade, sanders.

What to get my wife for Christmas? My creativity!
She had been asking for some hooks to hang up keys...for at least two years, though I had skills to learn to make it.
Lots of new techniques for me in this sweet little project.
I wanted to try bashing some metal and decided to use some steel wire nails [50mm long] to make these key hooks.
0:00 Cut off the head of the nails, I hammered them into a piece of timber to help in doing this. Make sure you keep these.
0:09 I used an old sledge hammer head as an anvil and took it all outside
0:14 Light up a propane blowtorch and heated up the nail heads until red hot.
0:22 Bash flat with a nice heavy hammer.
0:31 Heat up the cut ends of the wire nails and bash them flat as well.
Really satisfying.
0:44 Shape the flattened nail heads into little hearts as a little detail on the hooks.
0:55 Bend the nails to shape, I am fortunate to have a CZ metal bender which makes it easy to get consistent bends.
Clean up both the hearts and the flattened nails.
1:08 Solder the heart to the nail with plumbers solder + flux.
1:28 I took an old rusty angle bar that was being used in the garden to hold up some plants and cut off a length.
1:38 Drill two holes in each hook for fixing.
1:47 Mark equal distances along the length for the hook positions and drill a hole for fixing.
1:58 Get some steel wire pins and poke through the angle and thread on a hook.
2:02 Snip to length and hammer the end over with a ball hammer.
2:07 Align the hooks and drill through the second hole on each hook + rivet as before.
2:18 Take the timber and cut to size and give it a plane to make nice and smooth.
2:37 Drill two hidden fixing holes in the timber.
2:40 Drill two fixing holes in the bottom of the angle iron and countersink.
2:45 Spray it all with some clear lacquer.
2:50 When dry fix to the wall and...

DIY wood Christmas tree - How to make
It is mid-winter and and what better than to get out loads of twinkly light to celebrate the darkest part of the year...for the northern hemisphere!
I was inspired to make this 'twinkly light' DIY wood Christmas tree by the great YouTube site 'Inspire to make', check out their video as well, youtube.com/watch?v=sfS9hawIzog.
They inspired me! to make one for my wife as an early Christmas present.
I wanted this tree to have some of the eleemnts of the projects that I have made this year, re-using materials that were left over from some of the projects.
0:02 Prepare the materials
I decided to use up the off cut ply from the making of 'Sketchup Rob' for the Scaffold Board Shed video

This ply was old and dirty and already had some over spray paint on it.
Lay out the ply and I layed over the spray stencils that I had made this year in a random fashion with some off cuts of wood and sawdust spread around...to achieve a slightly grungy feel to the ply.
Liberally spray different colours moving the stencils around a bit.
0:11 Cut up the ply
Cut the ply in long strips.
I cut a bunch of strips at 100mm wide keeping 2 for the sides of the tree and the rest to be cut again at 45mm for the front planking.
0:18 Spray again
The side strips I sprayed with number stencils to represent time...
...and the thinner front strips then had large and small dots randomly sprayed on
0:38 Cut strips to length
The tree dimensions are about 520mm high and 460mm wide at the widest point.
Cut the front strips to over length.
Drop them on the floor and toss around to mix them up well as you want to achieve a random arrangement of dots.
Place on the bench and shuffle until happy with the layout.
Cut a couple shorter strips for the bottom 'tub' shape.
0:55 Cut out shape
Make up a paper pattern to your desired shape and size.
Lay on top of the strips and mark of the shape.
Cut the strips to shape...I used a cross cut though a hand saw works as well.
1.01 Back board
Cut out the DIY wood Christmas tree shape from some ply of OSB and cut out the inner shape leaving about 25mm as a glue area.
Add wood glue to this board and clamp the front strips to the backing board.
1:12 Sides
Cut the side pieces to length with lots of mitre cuts.
Cut some thin strips about 25mm wide to give a back box for the lights wiring.
Glue and pin these to the inside of the side pieces.
Nail the sides in place with some wood glue.
1:39 Lights
Get a set of Christmas tree lights, I used some warm white LED Christmas tree lights with 50 bulbs.
Using the dots of the front strips as placement for the lights, their pattern is random and will give a great effect, drill a hole the diameter of the bulbs in the centre of 50 of the dots. The bulbs want to poke through a bit at the front.
Make sure that your holes positions don't exceed the length between the tree lights you have.
Poke them through from the back, cut a slot in the bottom side of the bottom 'tub' shape for the wire to come out.
Hot glue the back of the lights in position so that they are secure.
Switch on to make sure all is working well...and to admire the beauty of your work.
2:07 Back
Choose a sheet for the back..I had a 3mm thin MDF scrap with an old architectural plan glued to it that was perfect to use.
Lay the paper cut out onto the board, spray around the edge [or mark with a pencil!]
And cut it out.
Drill a nice big hole near the top in the centre if you would like to hang it on a wall.
Pin it in position.

Easy way to etch steel.
This video is an expanded 'How to' of the metal plate etching in my LM386 tybe amp video - check it out! youtube.com/watch?v=pnuW_MoHR28
This video shows you how to make an easy etching tool to etch steel, made out of a wire nail, some heat shrink tubing and a cotton wool pad.
The etching requires around 12volt 1amp provided by a wall plug transformer, mine was a little higher volts + amperage.
Please be careful as you use electricity and salt water with this technique. make sure that high voltage and water do not get mixed.
Make a stencil of your design, I use sticky backed vinyl and a Silhouette Cameo cutter plugged into my computer to accurately cut out the stencil.
Some electrical tape and a sharp knife will give good results if a little slower to cut the stencil.
Stick the stencil on the steel sheet.
Add some crocodile clips to the ends of the transformer wires.
Mix up some salt solution from table salt and water. I used hot water only to help the salt dissolve quicker.
The salt water acts to conduct the electricity from the etching tool to the metal allowing 'ion liberation' to take place.
Connect the transformer negative crocodile clip to the etching tool + the positive clip to the metal sheet.
Plug in the transformer.
Dip the cotton wool of the etching tool into the salt water and place onto the bare metal of the stencil.
The metal will start to sizzle and give off some smoke.
Etch in a well ventilated place and do not breathe in the smoke, it wont be good for you.
Move the etching tool to a new area of the stencil after a few seconds, dipping into the salt solution from time to time.
I went over the whole stencil about three times to give a good etch.
The surface will blacken up.
When done, unplug the transformer and unclip the metal sheet.
Wipe the black sludge off with a rag and clean out the etched area.
As I was making a name plate of the amp, I drilled a couple of fixing holes and cut the outer area to shape.
I wanted the etch to really stand out so spray painted the face black and when dried, sanded the front face leaving the black paint within the etched area.
Really pleased with the results.

having built the Bike Tyre Speaker youtu.be/IQeb7E0mab4 I wanted to build a little mono amp to boost the mono speaker, an amp that looked as good as it would sound.
I am still learning electronics and the LM386 op amp circuit is a great project for beginners, in fact it was the second bit of electronics that I made after lighting some LEDs with a battery.
My fascination with electronics was started from having dissected old electrical kit for a couple of years, just to see what was inside...beauty and intrigue...what are those bits...and so I started to learn how to put my own electronics together.
The vacuum tube is the embodiment of seeing the 'working' inside, the glorification of the humble into an aesthetic beauty.
This humble little amp build takes the aesthetic qualities of the vacuum amp to make an intriguing little object that is great to look at, glowing red when switched on like a vacuum tube, the power source displayed and easy to get to...
...and the on / volume knob using an old bike derailleur jockey wheel to tie the amp materially back to the bike tyre speaker.
Unfortunately the sound from an LM386 amp will never be the rich + warm tones of a vacuum tube amp, though if you ask me, I think that as it looks so good, it makes it sound good as well.

I had a lump of mountain bike tyre laying around on my creative bench and right beside it an old small speaker that I had kicking about after an electronic dissection...
...they seemed to fit.
This is a super easy project to make and I wanted it that way, no extra electronics, wirless, wi-fi to get in the way...just rugged.
Get an old mountain bike trye, I think this one was a 26x1.9 with good tread though had a tear in the sidewall.
Cut a section out at about 240mm long cutting up to the and along the wire edge.
Find an old speaker 50mm in diameter, not going to be huge sound as only 0.25watts 8 ohm.
This will need to be glued to the tyre and to help with this you will need to make a timber enclosure that the speaker will be glued into and that will give a greater area for glueing.
I took a scrap piece of redwood wider than the speaker and turned it down on the lathe, turning out the inside for the speaker to snugly fit.
Finish the outside to the exact diameter of teh speaker as you don't want to see ant of the is when it is all glued up.
I put ballast in my tyre speaker to give it a bit of heft and to make sure that it sits in the correct position and dosen't rock over onto its side.
I made lead shot with a small hole punch and a scrap piece of lead flashing. Sand or rice would work well as an alternative.
Strip the ends of a couple pieces of wire, tin and solder to the speaker.
Drill a hole in the timber enclosure, pock the wires through and hot glue the speaker in place.
I added shrink wrap tubing to the wires so that they are protected from the ballast. Add a loose piece of shrink wrap for the jack end.
Tin and solder the wires to the cylindrical 3.5mm audio jack, and shrink the wrap over the connections.
Apply some rubber glue to the mid inner edge on one side of the tyre and place the audio jack flush with the outside of the tyre wall, clamp tight and leave to dry.
Add the ballast, apply glue to all of the inner tyre edges and push all the edges together and onto the speaker enclosure, make sure that the speaker id sitting nicely flush with the tyre ends.
Tightly clamp all together and leave to dry.
Remove the clamps...
...plug in...
...and play some music.

Pricklysauce's latest garden room, this time a makerspace for clients who wanted a space at the end of the garden for being creative with pottery and woodwork.
An existing shed existed and permission was given for a similar sized room under permitted development.
The design was led by the makerspace use and the fact that all of the materials had to go through the house as there was no other access.
Scaffolding is a fantastic system that I am exploring more with and the scaffold board seemed an ideal material for the structure of the building being robust and utilitarian, work like.
Comes in convenient lengths and easily maneuvered through a house.
The boards were used to make the frames of the room with bolted joints that were easily put together on site.
The frames were then clad with structural ply as a complementary material.
Scaffold boards were fixed as a roof sarking flying out at the end to give a generous overhang, providing solar shading and rain shading for the external bench beneath.
The bench is a place to rest after a hard day at work with maybe a barbecue and a cold beer.
The end glazed wall again framed with scaffold boards giving an amazing glazed wall for the display of the makers art.
Strip windows to the front following the linear line of the end glazed wall and at eye height when sat at a potters wheel.
Double glazed doors at the front for a generous opening and for more light.
Externally the front clad with a rainscreen of more scaffold boards with a shelf design for the clients to use for bringing on seedlings and small plants. In the summer the front of the shed should be a riot of colour.
The hidden side, rear walls and roof clad with black corrugated tin, fitting in well with the rough sawn timber.
The internal floor finished with more scaffold boards with a coating of floor varnish, reflecting the ceiling above.
The internal of the Scaffold Board Shed is all about shelving, the timber frames are pre-drilled for dowels of metal rods to hold loose fit scaffold board shelves making the internal walls into a massive adjustable shelving unit.
You can never have too much storage in a makerspace!
And for the long lengths of timber, metal + plastic there is a hidden storage space between the back wall and the wiggly tin for dry storage.
Sketchup was used for the initial modelling with my own 'Sketchup Rob' who followed the build right through to completion.
The music 'Enviable Road' for this video was created by Jukedeck a really interesting concept of music composed by algorithm. It is a little like a lucky dip, you never know what you are going to get!

Rake Key Hook Pricklysauce has a Diresta moment!
FIrst up - I was really miffed as my camera was videoing out of focus and I thought that I had lost this project.
I really like the simplicity of the key hook and so I decided to make a quick stop animation video and hopefully you wont notice the bad focusing too much - Apologies.
This key hook wouldn't have happened if not for the maker Jimmy Diresta, check out his youtube chanel if you havn't already come across him, he is huge in the maker field and has inspired me to look again at rusty old junk metal as a gold mine for new ideas.

This was a true moment, having removed a clients shed ready for my Scaffold Board Shed [video on its way] I found a load of rubble and old rusty metal bits of tools and pans under the floor.
It just felt right that Pricklysauce had a Direst moment!
This is nearly too easy, an old rake head, already snapped off.
Cleaned off old cement and rust, a bit of buffing up with drill wire brushes, grind the ragged snapped edge, drill two holes and screw it to a wall...
hang up your keys, screwdrivers, hammers....

Coat stand made with Kreg R3 jig
Our kids just dump their school jackets and bags on the floor and sofa!
A compromise was needed to be found and what better than to help my son build a cool little coat stand that he would be happy to use [it has worked!]

...and I wanted to play with it and see if I could use it in a more unusual application.
We wanted the coat stand to look cool in the room and not to look like a coat stand when not in use.
The idea was for a heavy base to make it self supporting with four poles at differing angles to add interest to the sculptural form.
We used an off cut of off sawn scaffold board from the Scaffold Board Shed that I am building for a client.
Cut it in half and thickness flat.
Shoot in the meeting edges to make a tight joint.
Clamp the Kreg jig to one board and drill a pocket hole right through and carry on down the length for three or four more times.
Mark the opposing board inbetween the already drilled holes and drill out with the Kreg jig.
We also did a few on the backside as well for added strength.
Glue the edge and cramp together.
Using the auger bit from the Kreg jig drill the holes deeper into the opposing board.
Cut up some 9mm doweling and glue them in using a small hammer to knock home.
Leave to dry.
When dried remove clamps and cut off the dowels flush with the board.
Cut the board to the desired length.
I found that there was a shake right through one part of the board.
Taking off the side wings of the Kreg jig clamp beside the shake and drill as before, we did three holes along the shake to stitch it together.
We squirted some glue into the shake and glued and hammered in doweling into the pocket holes, cutting them off flush.
Using a sander, sand the faces flat and smooth, also give the edges a good sand finishing off by hand to slightly round over the arris's.
The 20mm dowel for the coat poles was too large for the Kreg jig!
So we made a big 'Kreg' block jig out of a scrap of the scaffold board.
Mark the distance that is required for the poles to be positioned back from the edge.
Mark the two differing angles one on each end and transfer the lines around to the top measuring in about 50mm.
Using a 20mm auger drill two holes angled to the corresponding angles marked.
We used four poles and so marked out equal distances along the back edge of the base board.
Line up the jig block with the marks and cramp securely.
Work out the depth required to make a stopped pocket hole and stick on some tape to the auger as a guide.
Drill each hole making sure to alternate the angles.
Cut the 20mm dowel in half giving us about 1200mm lengths.
Sand one end of each pole to make a pleasing rounded shape.
Glue the poles into the holes.
All done.
Clear the space for the coat stand and stand back and watch as your son admires their wood working skills.
This was a great and simple project to make with my son and he now uses it mainly I believe because he made it.
The stitching of the boards together with the Kreg R3 pocket hole jig worked really well and I like the elongated doweling shapes that mark the surface.

Pricklysauce Scaffold Signboard
Having seen a cool spray painted advertising board on a recent trip to a beautiful Arctic beach,
I decided I wanted to make one for myself, to advertise to passer-by's that they too could have their very own funky garden room!
I took a gashed twisted scaffold board from the Scaffold Board Shed that I am building...
...cut the board to length...
...drilled a hole in each corner for the signboard to be tied to a tree...
...laid out the card stencil to register...
...the lettering, tacked down with spray glue...
...remove the stencil and spray black...
...the negative space.
Remove the letter cut outs to reveal the sign.

Pricklysauce Logo Stencil
A little video of testing a new to me spray stencil technique of spraying the negative space.
I came across this idea recently up in the Arctic on a stunning beach when I came across a sprayed timber sign for an adventure company.
It looked cool, so I had to make one for Pricklysauce...but I just wanted to check it out first.

How to make a sail tent
I was given an old sail and we were off to a mountain biking festival so why not make a...
...Sail Bivvy Tent!
A bivvy tent is a single layer tent that may let in a little water though it was wet at the festival and I was no wetter in this tent than our normal 'family' tent.
The sail is a Jib sail, the skinnier front sail.
Lay it out and fold over into the rough shape needed to work out the length needed.
Cut off the top section.
Cut out two triangular parts from the off cut for the two doors and sew them to the main part of the sail.
Make two end poles from fencing stakes using the eyelet holes in the tent to hook over the stakes.
I re-used the metal rings from the tent and spliced some braid on braid rope for the guys.
Cut some more of the fencing stakes for tent pegs.
Silicone up any eyelet holes not needed and apply some brush on waterproofer to the sailcloth.
Find a beautiful place to camp and put up the tent, or your garden would do!
It sleeps two adults with ease.
If it is hot in the day and you want some shade, open up the side an d use an adjustable paint roller handle with a bolted added to the end and guy out for a cool sun shade tent.
Just remember to pack a good heavy hammer.

Stomp box shoe
I have an old pair of Crocs with a hole in the sole and instead of throwing them away, I give them a second life as a cool pair of Stomp Box Shoes.
A stomp box is a box that you stomp! and makes a drum beat when playing an instrument like a guitar.
I adapted my Crocs by making a very simple electronic circuit by using two Piezo discs and a female guitar jack.
Solder them together.
Drill a hole into the side of one of the shoes and insert the jack.
Let the Piezos poke out of the base of the shoe and hot glue them to the bottom.
Plug into the guitar amp and stomp away!
This was my first time playing a stomp box so maybe I need some practice! The Stomp shoe worked well with my Fender modelling amp giving some interesting effects to the beat.
Super simple and so effective.

How to make a BBQ
Summer is here and we were heading off to a little hidden beach that we like in Cornwall and we needed a BBQ that we could carry in.
I had kept our old gas boiler when it had been replaced and had found a flat expansion tank at the back...perfect for a BBQ tray.
Cut the expansion tank around the seam and prise apart.
Inside there is a rubber diaphragm that needs removing, no way to avoid black hands!
I decided to use both parts, one for the coals that would have air holes drilled into, the second one set below as a heat guard to avoid campsite grass getting scorched and to catch any ash.
I wanted a good stable foot...an old frying pan would be perfect.
Mark out with tape for three feet and cut out the shape.
I wanted a fully adjustable height for the cooking and came up with the idea of having a central threaded rod with the tray attached to it, spin it around to raise or lower the food.
Bolt the trays and foot together with some threaded bar and nuts and add a locking nut that only tightens half way down its thread.
This allows an additional threaded rod to be hand tightened into it to carry the wire tray.
This can be removed for easy carrying and to use the BBQ for a wood fire.
Wire some old wire trays together and bolt on a threaded bracket, often used for cabinet height adjustment feet.
Add a carrying handle.
Nearly done.
The expansion tank comes with a bicycle air valve for pressurising the tank.
To good not to use!
I took some micro copper tube and flanged out one end.
Bent to form a circle within the fire area and crimped the other end closed. Drill some air holes along the pipe.
Adapt a washer and attach all with bolts and some fire cement to the BBQ tray.
Now if the fire needs some more oxygen, screw on a bicycle pump and pump in some air to where it is needed.
All done.
Grab some coals and head of to a beautiful place for a great BBQ.

Make a windsurfer into a Wave Ski
Its summer time and the surf is beckoning!
I have a classic old Mistral windsurfer kicking around never being used, which seemed such a shame...
...so why not give it a second life and make it into a Wave Ski.
For those not familiar with a wave ski, it is a sit on canoe that is used in surf much like a surfboard with little fins at the back to help keep it on the wave face.
They also have added buoyancy at the rear to assist in staying on the wave.
An old windsurfer will be great...won't it!
Chop off the end of the windsurfer and cut a slot in the main board for the fin to poke through.
Due to the curved shapes of the deck and bottom of the board, I made up some timber wedges and glued it all together. With the addition of some extra foam to form a boxy rear end, then cover with glass fibre cloth and brush on resin.
Follow the mixing quantities of the resin that you use.
I re-fixed the foot straps to the board by making up some ply inserts and glued + fibre glassed these to the board.
Print off some templates and spray some graphics and finish off with more paint on the top.
Surfs up!
Well Cornwall wasn't very big the day I went, to be honest there very nearly wasn't any surf!
But who cares I had a great time playing in the water on my own wave ski made from rubbish.
