2024-12-24 Hawaiis Kilauea volcano eruption. Ethan Pei 2024-12-29 | Kīlauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes located on Hawaii's Big Island, began erupting early on December 23, 2024. The eruption commenced at approximately 2:20 a.m. local time, with fissures opening on the caldera floor and releasing lava fountains up to 295 feet (90 meters) high. Lava flows spread across Halemaʻumaʻu crater and a section of the caldera that collapsed during the 2018 events, covering approximately 650 acres (263 hectares). NATIONAL PARK SERVICEInitially, the eruption was vigorous, but by the afternoon of December 23, volcanic activity had decreased, and by 4:00 p.m., fountaining ceased. However, on December 24, lava fountaining resumed, with fountains reaching heights of about 246 feet (75 meters). This renewed activity was accompanied by increased volcanic gas emissions, primarily sulfur dioxide, which can create volcanic smog (vog) affecting air quality downwind. USGSThe eruption has remained confined within the summit caldera inside Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, and no homes or infrastructure are currently threatened. The area directly affected by the eruption has been closed to the public since 2007 due to hazards such as crater wall instability and rockfalls. Visitors can observe the eruption from designated viewpoints within the park.
