A new album for 2023 Stile Antico 2022-05-18 | We spent the weekend recording our second album for Decca Classics, entirely devoted to the music of William Byrd! It will be released early in 2023, marking 400 years since Byrd's death. Here's a little taster of the wonderful 'Tribue, Domine' from our sessions!
Stile Antico sings Tallis: Miserere nostri, Domine Stile Antico 2022-05-11 | Recorded in 2006 as part of our debut album Music for Compline, this sublime work remains a firm favourite of the group, both for its beauty and for the rewarding challenges it poses in performance.'Miserere nostri, Domine', for seven voices, is an amazing display of Tallis's skill as a composer. It is a 'canon six in two' - six of the seven voices are used to create two different canons. The first canon is between the two uppermost lines, two beats apart. The second canon involves four of the remaining voices simultaneously: the melody in the third part is sung at quarter-speed by the fourth part, upside-down and at half-speed by the lowest part, and upside-down and at one eighth-speed by second lowest part. Introducing Toward the Dawn Stile Antico 2021-05-14 | We are delighted to announce a UK tour of our new programme 'Toward the Dawn' the perfect way to celebrate the end of lockdown and the resumption of concert life. 'Toward the Dawn' charts a course from twilight to sunrise, echoing both the rhythms of church liturgy and the medieval experience of night, seductive and unsettling in equal measure. Taverner's mighty 'Ave Dei Patris filia' (based on a chant for Matins) stands at the end of a delicious sequence of sacred music, chansons and madrigal, by such masters as Byrd, Lassus, Tallis and Monteverdi. Highlights include Allegri’s 'Miserere' and Nico Muhly’s 'Gentle Sleep', a haunting setting of words by Shakespeare written especially for Stile Antico. This programme seems particularly resonant as we look to the future with renewed hope after a long, dark year. We are enormously grateful to Tom Corran for his generous support.
