I am not the most well versed in the lore but I like Rosetta (the blonde girl here) and Chelsea (the pink girl and object of her jealousy). Supposedly this song is inspired by the Phantom of the Opera in part, which makes sense— the whole Carlotta versus Christine, dropping objects on people while they sing on stage, etc.Actually fun fact, despite what the PV might have you believe, seems like flirting with as many guys as humanly possible is a coping mechanism of some sort for Rosetta. According to the official website: “Behind her mask, she was abused as a little girl and hates men so much it makes her sick.”Again, not the most up to date on the Royal Scandal series, but it’s sweet to see how after this point Rosetta becomes fiercely protective of Chelsea, to the extent she was like. YEAH.---So yeah uhhhh been about a year since I last did a Japanese cover, they're quick to do and I was mulling over all my other WIPs and just not being satisfied with them enough to post just yet so. Here we go, a quick and loud cover.I feel sort of bad I didn't give such a lovely song more time... Is what I thought at first, but then the more I sang the lyrics I realized this is sort of exactly how this song is meant to be sung-- no fretting over it, killing your hesitations... Not caring if it sounds coarse or unpleasant, just letting your voice run wild. So I guess this is method singing in a way, LOL. However, if I do sound a bit tired it's because at some parts my voice is LOL. Not from the song itself but from making myself sing every single day this month... They are based on my own translation.)—Ah… How do I begin to describe how I feel about this song.It quickly wormed its way into becoming one of my favorite Vocaloid songs of all time. And considering how many Vocaloid songs I know and love, that is no shallow honor. Everything about it just feels very personally catered to my aesthetic likings… Especially as a Madoka fan. I NEED to see a MadoHomu version of this song, please. It fits them in Rebellion so well.If you’re confused as to what the PV depicts, it’s based upon Dazai Osamu’s “A Urgent Appeal” (dealing with the relationship between Jesus and Judas from the Bible) but with a magical witch and her maid followers instead.I also wanted to try my hand at making lyrics for this song, since I disagreed with some translations of the grammar I’d seen floating around in the most well known subtitles. Namely, that その度に何回も繋がれるように (you ni) in the chorus is not meant as “in order to”, but the second meaning: signifying a prayer, a plea, a wish on a star. Thus, it isn’t “in order to make sure we’re reconnected, no matter how many times” but “I pray we may be able to be reconnected each and every time we’re split apart”, which I sung as “I’ll pray to every God I know to keep you here to hold me”.Additionally, まだ誰も知らない感覚で救われていく: most of the translations I’ve seen interpret this line as the singer talking about somebody else being saved, but I don’t agree. 救う is in the passive form here, I think if the singer was wanting to talk about saving someone else they would have said it more directly/not implied no part in it. To me, this reads as the singer saying “*I* can still be saved. YOU can keep on saving me.” It’s not a one time scenario of helping someone out of a rut, it has that holy feeling: you save me each and every day with your presence, you bless me, I want to ensure things remain that way, that I can keep being saved/blessed by you. まだ誰も知らない also implies a certain level of possessiveness in my opinion: dare mo shiranai literally means “nobody knows”, but I often see it in lyrical contexts with the meaning of “nobody knows except ME, it’s as good as a secret”. In my interpretation, the singer wants this feeling to stay that way; they don’t want to share how wonderful it is with anybody else— it’s that sort of jealousy.Yeah so ANYWAY I’m a couple months late but this was my birthday gift to myself. I love this song and I needed to sing something I loved on my 24th birthday since I don’t feel too happy about getting older anymore.I have a backlog of covers I started working on alongside this one, so I should be able to post more in the next few months and hopefully have some to post while I’m away in Japan from April to July. Just wanted to release a cover before the year ended but English lyrics take a lot of time and effort to make, and the song I started working on in English to cover is… very hard. It’s kind of exhausting to sing and might take a while. So, I decided I’d release a Japanese cover before the year is out. The truth is English covers take a LOT more time since the lyric writing process is… difficult (nobody can ever tell me I half-ass it at the very least, but I take my time making sure my adaptation is as good as it can possibly be). It’s not a foreign word- just the Japanese word for Samsara in Katakana. “Lynne” is actually spelled リン in Japanese, no ネ at the end. Proof-reading my lyrics seems to be a common theme with all the Hachi songs I think about covering, since his songs are rather vague and came out during a time where translations and resources were scarcer than they are today. In the end, I wound up looking through a lot of Japanese forums and websites focused on Kenshi Yonezu/Hachi and the meaning behind his lyrics to create my translyrics, so if you’re confused about any decisions I made which made not be as accurate to the literal translation then I encourage you to check my notes on my lyrics blog- I likely explain why I made the decision there. I hope you recognize that focusing on being vocally perfect wasn’t my goal here- I thought taking time away from covers for the last two months would help me recuperate, but I just wound up feeling like shit. I think this song shows the perfect build up to how the thoughts keep getting more and more intense, all stemming from a simple thought: “What if I just left everything behind right now?”, and at the end, everything calms as it must, even if it isn’t well.I could gush on and on about how much I love this song and what exactly I think it means for hours on end- but I’ll cut it short. I’ve always found it extremely creepy how it builds… I think the several verses really serve this song well, as such. It gives you time to piece together what exactly is happening before it all comes crashing down (of course me being me, I went a bit trigger happy adding a bunch of harmonies and ad-libs). always really loved Riliane but Kayo is definitely another favorite character of mine (along with Clarith haha). Not a super well known song but one I really wanted to get to. I think that’s the case with most of 164’s songs sadly (minus Ama no Jaku and Time Machine, but even Time Machine was a collaboration with 40meter). Buuuut I'm also really really sick right now, so singing hasn't been easy (I'm super congested and sound incredibly nasally). Doing covers like these was something I had always wanted to do, as early as 2014. But because high school was such a train wreck time of my life, I never got the opportunity or guts to post anything until last year. And I'm really glad I did. I wasn't sure how people were going to respond at first, and true I know I can't be somebody everyone likes, but the fact that people like me to begin with is truly something. For me as a person, singing is everything. I've dedicated my entire life to studying music and vocal technique, and since I'd rather make a living teaching others so they can sing too, having this as a performance outlet (to replace all those years of musical theatre) is really nice.
