LRVG 8 bit vs 16 bit Challenge Response #2
updated
I really like this game even though the movements take a lot of getting used to! So addictive and fun... and frustrating at times 😂
I got my personal best in this stream of 335,890. Well pleased!

This isn't my favourite genre of game for a challenge. It's supposed to be a high score challenge not a fastest time challenge but we play the cards we're dealt and this is what I've managed.
Still Joker free but by 'eck this was close 😂
Game 3 was Flying Shark. How did everyone do?
Game 4 has been selected as Flicky by Sega (1984). DIP Settings: Lives: 3, Extend: 30k 80k 160k, Difficulty: Easy.

I think I was a bit off form for this one. Didn't get anywhere near my personal best and overall did quite abysmally. I still enjoy this game and will play it regularly but hopefully not again as a challenge!
My stream best was 115,860. I'm hoping to play more if time allows.

I do like this game. It's been added to my "Games I Like but Suck At" list. I've been trying and trying to improve but not getting anywhere so this is the best I have! Not even sure more time would help in this but it is fun and I will play again without hesitation.
Commentary is overdubbed (which is probably the best way) and surprisingly very little background noise!
Game 2 was Rastan. How did everyone do?
Game 3 will be Flying Shark by Toaplan/Taito (1987). ROM: fshark.zip, Difficulty: Normal. Bonus Life: 50k 200k 150k+, Lives: 3.

A simplistic but very playable early game with a simple music track that will dig its way into your brain and get stuck there!
I enjoyed this game and intend to play more when time allows. My stream score was 96,425 but I'm aiming to beat 100,000! Not sure if I will but I have a few weeks yet.

A very competent shoot-em-up which isn't overly difficult but does require a lot of time to play. I don't get much time usually but I did get a few games in on this and I'm satisfied with this run even though I'm hearing 1ccs already coming in!
Sorry about the lack of commentary, just haven't had the quiet time necessary for this one!
What a frustrating, janky piece of carp this game is! I just can't get to grips with it no matter how much I try and as for those bats...
Anyway, I ended up with a stream score of 94,700 and added this to my list of Never To Be Played By Choice Ever Again Before The Heat Death of the Universe games.
The music is good though!

Game 1 was Salamander 2. How did everyone do?
Game 2 will be Rastan by Taito (1987). ROM: rastan.zip, Difficulty: Medium, Lives 3, Bonus Life: 100k 200k 400k 600k 800k.
This game is available on MiSTer.

While I'm not a fan of this genre I don't hate games like this and this is one of the better ones due to the fact that if you lose a life it's not game over. You can easily build up enough power to carry on.
It's still quite frustrating needing precise movements at the right times to survive and appears to have a ranking system as the Stage 2 boss was very much more difficult when I started that phase at over 90000 points.
Anyway, my best score on stream was 123700. If I get the time I will try more but it's not a game that draws me in and I already have more than I expected to get so might just leave it. Onwards and upwards to the next game!

This is one of those games I keep coming back to and the C64 port is my favourite arcade conversion on that computer (though not my favourite C64 game). I recorded this with a lot of background noise and was happy with the result so kept it and overdubbed a commentary.
I'm no expert on this game and this isn't my personal best but it's the furthest I've been so yes, I'm please no matter where I place!
Season 16 Champion's Choice was Dragon's Lair. Not many entries but plenty of memories!
The first game of the season (Pinge's PCBs) is Salamander 2. ROM: salmandr2, no DIP settings to change.

I cocked up so much on this stream. Forgot the "Go Live" button in Studio then ended in the wrong order! 😂
Oh the joys of fatigue!
I've never played this game or even heard of it until this challenge was announced! It's a hidden gem but it's very *very* difficult!
My stream best score of 32,200 didn't beat my personal best but I think I'll be playing this more if time allows.

It's still up for debate if this is really a game but it's still a stonewall classic that I love. It was in the first generation of laserdisk games and the graphics were astounding even though the gameplay is just moving the stick or pressing the button at the right time to continue the pre-recorded sequence.
I didn't get to play it much back in the arcades due to the cost but I've played it quite a bit since I found the laserdisk emulator I use for this game. It's the one I keep coming back to even though I also have access to Space Ace, this is the first one I saw so has the most nostalgia.
Here I complete it a few times and beat my best score but fail in my task to get the maximum. Still going to try for that! Stream score was 398,419.
I also demonstrated the infinite lives cheat and show a few death scenes by using that cheat.

I have commentary here which states my opinion on this game far better than I can in text so listen to that but TL;DR it's an excellent game, especially for the system, but it's waaaaaay to much for me to cope with! 😂
Game 10 was Pusar, how did everyone do?
Champion's Choice will be Dragon's Lair. 5 lives, Normal difficulty. Preferable version starts with no tentacles and has closing wall or flaming ropes as first scene. Playing is of course optional but state your memories of the game here or in the Discord and they will be displayed on the relevant page of the web site.

A tricky and often frustrating game that's actually a lot of fun! Classic Sega gaming from the very early days it seems quite simplistic but is also very playable and very "just one more go".
I get a personal best score of 49,600 which puts me in second place behind the gaming god and chooser of this game, CharlieFar.
It was a rare Saturday stream but this is the second one I've done recently and they seem to be popular (for me anyway). Not saying I'm going to stream on Saturday regularly but it's interesting!

Not a horrible game but not my type of game. Everything has to be done without error or it's game over. Also, not had a lot of time to put into this and as I want to continue my jokerless run I gave it my best shot in the time available and this is it! The lack of time is also the reason for the lack of commentary. I simply had to record this run with a lot of background noise.
A fun and classic game and I get my PB of 24,250 on stream. I want to get further but will I get the time?
I play using a cracked version that allows changing the main character. Any changes, of course, invalidate the challenge so I wait to near the end of the challenge before I demonstrate a few of the options. They do have a different hit box so change the gameplay.

Game 9 was Punch-Out!!, how did everyone do?
Game 10 has been selected as Pulsar by Sega (1981). ROM: pulsar.zip, DIP settings: Lives 3.
Correction! It is available on the MiSTer.

Here I unbox and play a level.
The first part was filmed second, the second part first (when I was shattered but had time) and the last part last (obviously).
I noticed afterwards that my voice in the last part is rather quiet but as this was a one shot thing I decided to leave it. It still shows the gameplay!
To make things clear I love emulation and (as regulars know) I use it a lot but there's just something about real hardware that has its appeal :)
I discovered on this day via a social media post that Jumpman was released for the Apple so I checked if I had it and I did. I felt it was worth a quick play as a recording but really don't have the time or the environment for a full blown video so this is what I come up with. There is some background noise but you still get the idea of how this version differs from the Atari and C64 versions and is a prelude to a proper comparison video I have in mind for the near future.
I was not looking forward to this challenge but it turned out to be more fun than I was expecting. I also got further than I ever thought I'd get (as far as Kid Quick - the 4th fighter) with a score of 69,770!
While it'll never be one of my favourite games by any means, I no longer hate it and will seek it out at any Arcade Club or retro events.

This is just Too Much Going On for me. Not only is there the challenge of just staying alive there's also the challenge of the totally batshit scoring and I find it completely overwhelming. I'm still sticking with the No Joker plan unless absolutely unavoidable so I have given this about as much as I can.
One thing I will say though, we have a wide range of preferences in this great group and I do accept we have to take the rough with the smooth. We can't like everything nor can we expect everyone else to like what we do but it's a challenge I accepted when I joined in. Now on to the next challenge!
Game 8 was Gaplus, how did everyone do?
Game 9 has been selected as Punch-Out by Nintendo (1984). ROM: punchout.zip, DIPS - Difficulty: Easy, Time: Longest.
Addendum: Mappy did submit a score of: 111,400 and while this has not made any difference to the table positions it was an oversight that needed correction and so has now been added.
The challenge web site is: kerfufflecomp.co.uk
I wasn't looking forward to playing this but I enjoyed it while I played it, even if the bonus juggling stage gets old really fast!
I would have been happy to get 100,000 on this stream but I beat that 4 times, getting a best of 181,200 which is far, far better than I expected!

I don't normally do the mid-season stuff but this was involved to get working so as I'd already put that much effort in and they're actually fun to play for short periods, I decided to put a run in this time! Enjoy my effort!
Game 7 was Juno First, how did everyone do?
Game 8 has been selected as Gaplus by Namco (1984) as chosen by Lucas Rainford and it also available on the MiSTer.
DIP Settings are: Lives 3, Difficulty Standard (0), Extra lives at 50k, 150k and every 150k (M0?)

I've liked this game since I first saw it and have a lot of fun playing this. I cocked up the start by leaving the high score table up but correct that after the first game. Top score reached in the stream was 160,820 which is also a personal best by far!

We've been playing in "Special" mode which is basically a Boss Rush.
I'm afraid I have not got a lot of spare time at the moment due to my personal life being quite hectic (nothing bad I assure you) but I aimed for a jokerless season this time so this is a token effort to make that target!
Hopefully I'll have more spare time soon so will be able to put more effort into these challenges but I'm still having fun regardless.
Game 6 was Omega Race, how did everyone do?
Game 7 will be Juno First by Konami (1983). DIP settings: 3 lives, easy difficulty (MAME defaults).

A fun game in which I achieved 95,625 but at the wrong difficulty setting!
I shall now have to put more time into to get a fairer score onto the leaderboard!

Having seen other Megaman games played I wasn't looking forward to this at all and due to being very busy in my home life (all good I assure you) I was on the verge of playing my Joker. I didn't want to do that as I am determined to play this entire season without so decided to tag it on to my Mamemeister High Score Kerfuffle stream and that worked well. I do expect to come last but for me it's about the playing, not the winning, and I'm still on target for a no Joker season!
I played this using my knob, which isn't rude but my home built arcade spinner! Even with controls close to the arcade I couldn't beat my previous lucky score and got more frustrated as the challenge progressed. I'm now officially burned out on this game but I will still come back to it now and again.. just not for a while 😂

Game 5 was Jump Bug, how did everyone do?
Game 6 is Omega Race by Midway (1981) - DIPs are 1st Bonus Life 100km, 2nd and 3rd Bonus Life 750k 1500k.

This is an excellent arcade port of a fun game. It has its quirks but still has tonnes of appeal. It is in part a memory game but don't let that put you off.
My stream score was 63,780. I feel I may be able to improve on that but I'm going to need the time to do so!

I've recently played this for the Tubers challenge so still warm and managed a stream best of 97,430, which is under my personal best achieved on this challenge of over 115,000. A janky game with loads of charm and one I enjoy immensely!
I hope you enjoy watching as much as I enjoy playing.

I've never really been any good at this style of game and this is no exception but it is an excellent game nonetheless. I've also been very short of time lately so not had much practise time but I wanted to get a run in a avoid using a joker so here it is!
Game 4 was Donkey Kong 3, how did everyone do?
***CORRECTION*** Lucas did play, Pinge didn't. Table now amended, corrected and updated.
Game 5 has been chosen as Jump Bug by Rock-Ola (1981); Difficulty: Easy, Lives: 3.
No point pressing on the pyramid stage please!

This playthrough has commentary so you can hear my thoughts as I go!
First seen by me on holiday in Weymouth in 1982 and is as janky as hell to control but you can get used to it and it has a lot of charm.
I still had fun playing though and went past the normal finish time due to how easy it was! Shame it was broken.

It's an original Tehkan PCB with JAMMA adaptor connected through a SuperGun 2.0 and AV output is SCART to a GBC-Control scan converter for eventual HDMI output, all mounted on an easy to put up and collapse set of shelves!
I've not had much spare time lately but decided to get something out for you all to peruse. I hope to have something better in the near future when I don't have so much else to sort out.
Game 3 was Jailbreak, how did everyone do?
Game 4 has been chosen as Donkey Kong 3; Lives 3, Extra lives:30k, Additional life: 30k, Difficulty 1 (Easy). Do NOT use the MiSTer core for this game. It's broken and far too easy.
The challenge web site is: kerfufflecomp.co.uk
I found this game to be horrendous to play. Another Konami coin muncher.
It's not that it's difficult, there some difficult games I do like, but it's frustratingly difficult and I'm glad I don't "have" to play this again!
Requests and challenges will be the only time 😂
My stream best score was 69,200 which is also far greater than I ever expected to get so I'm happy with the score at least.
My Twitch channel: twitch.tv/ponderprg
Competition site: kerfufflecomp.co.uk
This game could be so much better but in my opinion Konami just made it into a coin muncher. Though this is difficult I'm thankful it was decided that we play the Japanese "E" version as the world "M" version doesn't have a difficulty curve, it has a difficulty cliff!
I do have commentary running throughout which will explain more how I think of the game.
