Filmed in PSHQ Boiler Room, a virtual reality club in VRChat.
Venue Overview:
Boiler Room’s unique setup features two 4-sided screen pillars flanking the DJ decks. The dark environment makes the screens a primary light source. My goal was to create visuals that complemented the DJ’s energy while using lighting to craft a moody, immersive atmosphere.
Creative Process:
I built my visual system around bold, simple patterns and shapes, which compress well for streaming and illuminate the space effectively. The system is designed for live experimentation, functioning like a video synthesizer. I can manipulate elements—adding, subtracting, blending, and modulating them in real-time—to adapt to the mood and discover unexpected scenes.
Reflections & Improvements:
Managing the system live requires intense focus, so I’d like to simplify it. Incorporating a MIDI controller could offload some tweaking, allowing quicker responses to musical shifts. It would also help me be more present. While I generally matched the energy, I aim to better highlight moments of tension and release. On a technical note; Adding controllable base lighting could balance the venue’s atmosphere, enhance mood through color, and add variation.

Concept:
Steph performed an interpretive dance with their own visual system, I brought that stream into my visual machine. The idea was to have steph project on the front screens with backing visuals on the screen behind.
Reflections & Improvements:
This was my first time working with another VJ and my first time working with a dancer. Managing both my own visuals and steph's was a new challenge. My visual system has grown a lot over the months, it's definitely in need of simplification.
Spent a little too much time setting up forthcoming scenes or experimenting. I missed out on some key tone shifts and moments in the music.
I also couldve controlled light levels in the venue more. Watching it back the venue is completely illuminated for a large part of the set and couldve benefitted from some darker or more subdued moments.
Despite this by the 35-minute mark, I found a good rhythm—settled on some effects for steph which masked well, turn on reactivity and used some simple patterns for the back. Contrast between front and back was good and it allowed me a bit more room to react to the moments. There are some moments in this set im quite proud of, I think people enjoyed it and Steph very positive on it.
Despite the challenges, I feel I gained valuable insight into the venue and myself as a performer. Huge thanks to Steph for their energy and being a great artistic collabortator, theyve been an inspiration to me and their performance that night set the tone for the night.
