This track goes for lo-fi production and minimalistic songwriting. I make no apologies for the rough sound and the deadpan vocals. While the track was made with the Teenage Engineering OP-1 portable synth (a sort of modern and much enhanced Casio VL Tone of today), I wanted to harken pack to the imperfect analog synthesizers, drum machines, and other electronic instruments, which were responsible for the raw and gritty sound of the synthpop tracks that inspired me. I'll leave it to you to decide if there's anything approaching a melodic or catchy hook in the midst of this digital dirge. I do think I did an acceptable job when it comes to delivering the vocals in a monotone, deadpan style, which some listeners ascribe to the overall sense of detachment and otherworldliness. Ulanzi J12 Sound Test | Figuring out the best settings for me Mamotreco 2023-05-10 | I bought the Ulanzi J12 as an affordable wireless audio microphone option. The audio levels coming out are very quiet, surprisingly so while the audio quality is you get what you pay for. So I wanted to figure out how I could boost the level in Final Cut Pro (the software I use to edit my video).PLEASE NOTE: Loudness varies significantly throughout the video due to the testing, so please protect your ears. The video starts roughly at its loudest and then alternates between loud and not loud (original audio). Please set your volume accordingly.I found that the Ulanzi J12 wireless microphone worked best when set to level 1 of noise reduction and then using the voice isolation parameter in Final Cut Pro at 50% (or thereabouts). Then adding a gain plugin to the audio and boosting as much as you want. I found I got occasional clipping so I put a limiter after that which I could drive pretty hard. That is what I found could give me the cleanest loud boost of all the options I tested. YMMV but I don't think I would recommend compressors if you're trying to boost the level without clipping. I primarily did this test for myself as a troubleshooting exercise but if you have experience with this unit or any suggestions, I'm all ears.Overall, I would recommend you save up for a more reputable wireless microphone audio solution. With the Ulanzi J12 you get what you pay for. Fujifilm Fujicolor C200 - underrated or a grainy mess? Mamotreco 2023-04-28 | Taking a look at photos I took with a roll of Fujicolor C200 film. I used this 35mm fim roll in a film point and shoot camera from the 80s, the Ricoh TF-900. As a result, many of these photos were shot at +2 exposure compensation. This a nifty feature the camera has, which is designed to deal with back lit subjects. I used to boost the exposure because I felt that many example Fujicolor C200 photos I had seen seemed pretty dark.#fujicolor #35mmphotography #fujifilm Fujicolor C200 is a relatively budget-friendly (in this economy) medium-speed (ISO 200), daylight-balanced color negative film made by FujiFilm, which is designed for flexibility and ease of use. At ISO 200, Fujicolor C200 is supposed to be comparable to Kodak Gold 200. Fujicolor C200 produces reasonably nice colors, skin tones, and average grain, which make it a good value option for shooting on a budget. Interestingly, in some countries Fujicolor C200 is just branded as Fujicolor 200. This is just a branding difference and both are actually the same filmThe film's exposure forgiveness is reasonably wide, but best shoot it at box speed and metered for the shadows to avoid a noticeable green cast on your photos. Fujifilm XT4 Gritty Low Light Video in Classic Negative with vocoder retro synthpop music Mamotreco 2023-04-21 | Shot this with the Fujifilm X-T4 and the Fujinon 50mm f2 prime lens. I let the ISO run as high as it wanted to since I was shooting as we were driving around at night on the back roads of the Pacific Northwest suburbs. The IBIS is turned on since the lens has no OIS.#fujifilm #lowlight #vocoderThe background music I wrote years ago on Fruity Loops 3 with the vocoder vocals coming in from the Microkorg synth. There might also be some Casio CZ5000 melodies in there.You’ll notice that the footage is pretty jerky at moments but in a rather mechanical way. I believe that is due to the Fujifilm X-T4 IBIS which tends to be pretty rigid, which is great for static shots but not so much for dynamic movement situations. The Classic Negative film simulation which I applied to the video is very pleasing in terms of mood and color look, in my opinion. The curious case of the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM (w/ Sample Photos!) Mamotreco 2023-04-18 | This early 2000s Canon zoom lens for crop sensor cameras is a welcome surprise. The Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM has both a versatile zoom range and image stabilization. Additionally, the manual focus experience is really good because the focus ring is mechanically coupled to the lens mechanism.#CanonEFSLens #SamplePhotos #CanonLensReviewThis means no focus-by-wire and the odd, disconnected experience that sometimes offers when manually zooming. Nowadays, mechanically coupled zoom rings (either through clutches or with soft end-stops like this Canon lens) is the very much the preserve of higher-end lenses that are in a whole different price-range. Seeing this feature on a fairly entry-level lens is pretty cool. This gives photographers an extensive field of view range for capturing both wide-angle and telephoto shots. This crop sensor Canon DSLR zoom lens is suitable for a variety of photography applications and I plan to give it go for travel photography. The lens's image stabilization (IS) technology helps to minimize camera shake (by an advertised 3 stops equivalent), allowing for sharper images, especially in more challenging light conditions or when using slower shutter speeds. One thing to keep in mind, however is that while Image Stabilization helps with camera shake, it's of little use of the subject is moving and you want to stop that motion for the sake of clarity.The ultrasonic motor (USM) autofocus system of the lens was well regarded at the time and was considered to be pretty fast, accurate, and quiet. This makes it less awkward when photographing in quiet environments. The manual focus override feature I mentioned earlier also provides precise control for nailing focus when needed.The aperture range of f/4-5.6 isn't that bright overall. However, the lens's image stabilization feature is supposed to compensate for this limitation, to a certain degree, by allowing for slower shutter speeds with reduced image blur for static subjects.The build quality of the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM Zoom Lens is unabashedly plasticky but at the same time it is hefty in an ergonomic way. The lens features a metal mount, which is its saving grace.When paired with the Canon EOS 30D, this lens delivers satisfactory image quality, considering the zoom range. Driving at night in the Pacific Northwest | Synth Wave & Psychogeography Mamotreco 2023-03-28 | Music for driving around late at night in the Pacific Northwest. Merging lanes through saturated tail light reds as the bright headlight halos pass you by. This is what this synth music and accompanying video is all about. This track "Cybersyn - Centre Autoroutier" is part of an album called Intrigues Telematiques which is all about the melancholy feelings of forgotten technologies. Centre Autoroutier is French for a fancy rest stop. Rest stops in France were generally well maintained into the 90s and early 00s and featured functional but stylish architecture, well-appointed amenities, and even in modern sculpture works ... a sort of Eurotruck geographical vaporwave of late 20th Century nonplaces. CHDK is a free software add-on that allows users to unlock advanced features on their Canon cameras. However, you should be aware that it is experimental in nature and could brick your camera.With CHDK installed on the Canon Ixus 100 IS, users can access features like raw image capture. This is the feature that primarily interests me.Something else worth noting is that this camera isn't so old that it uses a defunct memory storage format. Older gen SD cards should do the trick on the Canon Ixus 100 IS.When I shoot RAW on my Canon Ixus 100 IS Digicam with the CHDK firmware, I get both a RAW DNG file and a JPEG. In this video, the JPEG is straight out of camera (SOOC) while I edited the RAW DNG files in Affinity Photo to give them a certain flavor that I find pleasing.Not only do I find the JPEGs from the Ixus 100 IS a bit too contrasty for my taste but I also enjoy using the split-toning feature to give the shadows and highlights of some of these images a bit of hue. Naturally, I also bring down the contrast of the image. I find this gets me close the wistful quality I look for in digicam images.With certain white balance settings, I also find that this camera tends to add quite a bit of red to the images. To be fair, I have also noticed this with the Canon EOS 30D which came out a few years before. Fuji XT4 Cinematic Low Light Footage with Fuji XF50mm F2 Mamotreco 2023-02-28 | Welcome to this low light cinematic video footage example of city lights shot from an airplane flying over at night. This was all shot on the Fuji XT4 camera using the Fujinon XF 50mm F2 R WR prime lens only.#fujifilm #lowlight #fujixt4 While filming from an airplane can offer a unique and breathtaking view of nocturnal cityscapes, it doesn't mean it's easy. Shooting through the airplane window is unavoidable, and the resulting video footage is fairly rough due to reflections, diffraction, and distortions. The Fujifilm X-T4 camera does pretty well in this less than idea cinematic filming condition. However, the rough quality of the footage does give it a vibe. The Fujinon XF 50mm F2 R WR prime lens is also ideal for low light situations in video, with its pretty wide aperture. It also has a decently shallow depth of field and satisfying bokeh.To capture the best footage possible, I shot this in manual mode with the Fuji XF 50mm f2 wide open. I still had to push the ISO as high as 6400 to pull any detail from the black abyss below. IBIS and Digital Image stabilisation were both engaged, as well as the fixed movie magnification crop (x1.39 I think).The Fujifilm X-T4 is no slouch when it comes to video, with features like 4K video recording at 60fps, slow-motion recording up to 240fps, and a nice big electronic viewfinder. It also allows for manual control over video settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, as well as image stabilization and (decent-ish) autofocus (when it wants to cooperate).One cool feature for me is the ability to use Fujifilm's famous film simulations while shooting video. This capability provides a range of distinct color and contrast profiles that emulate classic Fuji film stocks. The fact that these are not limited to photos but can also be applied to 10-bit video is huge! This allows Fuji users to achieve a defined look in their footage already baked-in, without needing extensive post-processing. In conclusion, while filming low light cinematic video footage of city lights from an airplane at night can be challenging, with the right equipment and techniques, it is possible to capture stunning footage. Out of the box it can only shoot JPEG with a handful of effects, color profiles and settings but with the CHDK hack, which loads in an alternative firmware from the SD Card. Btw, I have a new video coming on the Canon Ixus 100 IS: youtu.be/KeSZZ0uE_EIWith the hack, you can shoot in RAW and get RAW images in DNG format which is really neat and makes this digicam and interesting compact photo solution for me to get photos with less hassle than a bigger camera but more character than a mobile phone. With CHDK set up, you are no longer limited to JPEG output and I think being able to shoot in RAW format is a game changer. This means you have more latitude when editing your photos. Everything from tweaking white balance to lifting exposure can be done while retaining more image quality than you would with the vanilla jpeg output.It's the best of both worlds when it comes to digicams. In addition to this capability you also get a handy histogram to better expose your shots.Images that are shot in RAW mode have a thin black border around them, I assume this is because this Canon CCD digicam has Image Stabilization which probably induces a crop hence the appearance of the black border, only when shooting in RAW, as opposed to the intended JPEG output. I've had success editing the RAW DNG files from the Canon Powershot SD780 IS or Digital Ixus 100 with its CCD sensor on both Apple Photos and Affinity Photo.Another great thing is that while this camera sports a CCD sensor, it is modern enough to use SD Cards as its memory format which does make it much more convenient than older digicams that use defunct memory card formats.The ISO range goes up to 1600, however I don't recommend going north of ISO 400 because noise ramps up pretty quickly. With the raw images running color noise removal is a great way of maintaining the digital texture while taming some of the more apparent characteristics of digital noise.In terms of form-factor, the Canon Powershot SD780 IS or DIgital Ixus 100 is right up there in terms of compact but solid design. It only weights a mere 4 ounces and change while being the size of credit card with the thickness of an early smartphone or tablet (or 2017 macbook pro). By that I mean that the Fuji 23mm f2 has more vignetting when shooting wide open and it's a little softer than the 50mm f2 when it comes close focus. The 50mm f2 is an overall better performer when it comes to shooting wide open at F2 as well as close-focus. However, they both complement each other really well across shooting scenarios. The fact that both are Weather Resistant (WR), have internal focussing, and robust construction makes them really wonderful to use.For most of these pictures I set the Fujifilm X-T4 to Dynamic Range Priority (DR-P) which as I understand it applies some automated tone-mapping by combining the Dynamic Range boost with the Highlight and Shadow settings. Change enabled in the Project Settings of the Octatrack (Press Func. + Mixer to access). This is a checkbox within the MIDI category (the last option in the pop up menu) in the Sync settings. You also need to set a MIDI channel number (that isn't being used for anything else) to transmit those program changes (aka. Pattern Changes) to the Analog Four. Use the arrows and the level knob to set that. Before moving to the Analog Four, check that TRANSP and CLOCK Send boxes are checked.Over on the the Analog Four, press Function + Global (the last key in the mini keyboard on the unit) to access the synth's settings. Arrow down through the options until you reach the MIDI Config item. Hit "Yes". Check the Sync Settings, Clock Receive and Transport Receive should both be checked. Then Arrow down to the "Channels" menu item. Press "Yes". Arrow down to the 9th menu item "PROG CH IN CH" and make sure the channel number matches the sending channel from the Octatrack. Use Knob A to change, if necessary.Ensure that Song Mode is not on for the Analog Four. Now the Analog Four will play whatever pattern the Octatrack is playing at the time.Option 2 - There are no leaders Octatrack sets the tempo and play/stop.To make this happen, follow the instructions above but you need to ensure that on the Octatrack PROG CH is unchecked or off. This is way it isn't sending marching orders to the Analog Four.
