From Askegg: The Australian government is conducting a census on Tuesday 9th August 2011. The Australian Atheist Foundation is urging all citizens to seriously consider their religious beliefs and answer the question honestly.
I honestly believe most Australians are "cultural Christians". That is, they like the popular ideals of "be nice to people", "don't steal", and
"don't kill". While these *may* be Christian values, they do NOT constitute the necessary tenets and dogmas of the faith. Luckily for us the Christians themselves laid these out for us just over 300 years after Jesus reported walked the Earth in the Nicene Creed.
The Creed has been followed by (almost?) all denominations of Christianity since and hold be very familiar to many. It says there is one god who made everything, Jesus was born of a virgin rose from the dead after 3 days where he sits at the right hand of the father waiting to judge us all, there is only one church, and mandates belief in the resurrection of the dead and everlasting judgement and everlasting life. It's a lot to swallow.
If you do not believe these things, then be honest and write "no religion" (or the religion you currently hold true).
My deepest thanks go to Nonstampcollector's sister-in-law for the initial script, all his help in putting this together, and promoting the campaign.

If secular does not mean together and we somehow start playing ownership games over that, we will lose what we have been trying to achieve, as atheists, all these years.
As an atheist, by defending Any persons right to think what they want to think, protects my right to do so also.
Beware the people that wish to generalise just for entertainment. Often they are no better than a domesticated common cat, killing for entertainment.

The explosive story of chemistry is the story of the building blocks that make up our entire world - the elements. From fiery phosphorous to the pure untarnished lustre of gold and the dazzle of violent, violet potassium, everything is made of elements - the earth we walk on, the air we breathe, even us. Yet for centuries this world was largely unknown, and completely misunderstood.
In this three-part series, professor of theoretical physics Jim Al-Khalili traces the extraordinary story of how the elements were discovered and mapped. He follows in the footsteps of the pioneers who cracked their secrets and created a new science, propelling us into the modern age.
Just 92 elements made up the world, but the belief that were only four - earth, fire, air and water - persisted until the 19th Century. Professor Al-Khalili retraces the footsteps of the alchemists who first began to question the notion of the elements in their search for the secret of everlasting life.
He reveals the red herrings and rivalries which dogged scientific progress, and explores how new approaches to splitting matter brought us both remarkable elements and the new science of chemistry.

Unreported World travels to Israel to reveal how the rapid growth of Jewish "fundamentalists" is creating tension within Israeli society and endangering any negotiations on a peace deal with the Palestinians. Reporter Evan Williams and director Alex Nott visit the Mea Sharim district of Jerusalem, the heartland of ultra-Orthodox Jews known as the Haredi, or "those who fear God". They find a poor, overcrowded part of the city where everyone is wearing clothes in the style of 18th-century Europe, from where most of their ancestors came. 'We are the real Jews,' says one community leader, 'everyone else in Israel just happens to be born Jewish.'
Many of the Haredi sects were almost wiped out in the Holocaust. But their numbers are growing fast. Haredi are the fastest growing segment of Israeli society, with many families having as many as eight children. 'Every 20 years we have a community that is growing at eight or nine times,' says one of the Haredi men to Williams. 'It means we are growing in size and influence.'

Sixty years ago Israel established itself in the wake of the British Mandate of Palestine. For the Palestinians, expelled from their homes in the process, the Israeli War of Independence is still known as The Catastrophe (al-Nakba). Jeremy Bowen, the BBC's Middle East editor presents a look back at the creation of the state of Israel, examining the the events leading up to the Israeli war of Independence in 1949, its impact on Arab/Israeli relations and the implications for the Middle East.

The original description in the video read as follows;
"Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams already working on medical projects Haiti have treated hundreds of people injured in the quake and have been setting up clinics in tents to replace their own damaged medical facilities. Paul McPhun, MSFs operations manager for Haiti, described the current situation for MSF teams on the ground during a press conference on January 13."

Professor Stephen Hawking will take viewers on a journey through the Universe to explore the mysteries of physics.
Stephen Hawking: Master of the Universe, looks at how Professor Hawking overcame a life-threatening diagnosis to become the most famous physicist alive and, alongside other leading cosmologists, continues to introduce scientific ideas that weren't even imagined two decades ago.
The series will deal with Hawking's quest for a 'Theory of Everything', which could explain everything from the unimaginably vast scale of supernovae, black holes and dark matter, to the infinitesimally small sub-atomic world where quantum effects mean anything is possible.
"How can we understand the Universe? Is it arbitrary, or is there a grand design? Do we still need a God? Twenty years on, my need to find answers to the fundamental questions about our existence, is undiminished," Professor Hawking said.
"My life's work has been to unify the theories of the very large and the very small. Only then can we answer the more challenging questions. Why are we here? Where did we come from?"

If there were any doubts about writer and general provocateur Christopher Hitchens ability to pull a crowd, they were entirely dispelled by the sold-out opening night of the first ever Festival of Dangerous Ideas. Presented by the Sydney Opera House and the St James Ethics Centre, the Festival brought together some of the more controversial thinkers from Australia and around the world. Hitchens's keynote address, followed by a discussion with our own Tony Jones, was an expansion on his bestselling, "God is Not Great: Religion Poisons Everything". Hitchens was at his polemical best, delivering a beautifully constructed speech supporting his argument that religion is not only completely implausible, but often actively destructive.
Christopher Hitchens's other books include "Letters to a Young Contrarian", "Why Orwell Matters" and "The Missionary Position: Mother Theresa in Theory and Practice." He also writes a regular column in "Vanity Fair".
