Before WWI, a Somerville MA man named Archibald Query had been making it in his kitchen and selling it door to door, but wartime shortages had forced him to close down. By the time the war was over, Mr Query had other work and was uninterested in restarting his business, but he was willing to sell the formula. Durkee and Mower pooled their saving and bought it for five hundred dollars. Having just returned from France, they punningly renamed their product "Toot Sweet Marshmallow Fluff" but "Toot Sweet" didn't stay on the label for long. The situation of "no customers, but plenty of prospects" didn't last long either. An early receipt still in the company's scrap books records the sale in April, 1920 of three one gallon cans to a vacation lodge in New Hampshire. The price at the time was $1.00 a gallon! The door to door trade gained a reputation among local housewives that eventually placed Fluff onto local grocers shelves. Retail trade spread from there to the point where in 1927 they were advertising prominently in Boston newspapers.In 1929 they moved to a factory on Brookline Street in East Lynn, more than tripling their floor space to 10,000 square feet. At this point, they also hired four new employees, bringing their numbers to ten. They also merged with the Cream of Chocolate Company, makers of Rich's instant Sweet Milk Cocoa, and Durkee-Mower entered the Hot Chocolate business. Rich's Instant Sweet Milk Cocoa was too long a name for shoppers to be expected to remember easily, so in 1937 the name was shortened to simply Sweeco, and made more prominent on the label. The name and label change was backed up by a large newspaper advertising campaign, and the product's sales increased rapidly. Durkee-Mower continued to make Sweeco until 1962.Durkee-Mower became a pioneer in radio advertising when in 1930 they began to sponsor the weekly "Flufferettes" radio show on the Yankee radio network, which included twenty-one stations broadcasting to all of New England. The fifteen minute show, aired on Sunday evenings just before Jack Benny, included live music and comedy skits, and served as a stepping stone to national recognition for a number of talented performers. It's strangely hypnotic and insanely incredible to watch "The Bear" plow through a plate of wings in the time it takes most to eat two or three. On April 3rd, 2013 The Toasted Owl in Northampton, Massachusetts hosted a chicken wing eating contest just two months after Jamie won the 21st annual Wing Bowl by devouring 287 wings. Eaters had 10 minutes to eat as many chicken wings as possible to advance to the finals later in the month. When it was all said and done, Jamie came out on top with 75 wings in 10 minutes! That's 7.5 chicken wings per minute! What's scary is that he could very easily have eaten more but with the closest competitor no where near him he slowed down a bit. Jamie McDonald 2013-09-12 | Being able to eat unlimited amounts of food such as pancakes, French fries, apple pies and chicken wings every weekend may seem like a dream come true for food connoisseurs. On the other hand, it can become quite exhausting, according to competitive eater Jamie "the Bear" McDonald."It was extremely hard," said McDonald as he described the competitive eating event at Windsor Community Night on July 13. "It was so hot and humid out, it was not a fun eating, but it was for a good cause."The event was organized in conjunction with the New Britain Rock Cats baseball game, which dedicated the night to helping the Windsor Food and Fuel Bank. During the summer, the organization has a Summer Sandwiches Program to provide supplemental food to families whose children received free and reduced-price meals throughout the school year. The program helps to ensure that these children have enough food when school is not in session.McDonald heard about the community event and contacted the Rock Cats to be a sponsor, but a representative from the Rock Cats had something else in mind for the competitive eater. McDonald and the Rock Cats decided to incorporate his new restaurant, BBQ Bear's Smoke House, with a competitive eating event to help ticket sales."Anything that benefits the children, I try to get involved in," said McDonald.The end result was McDonald eating 9.74 pounds of pulled pork in 10 minutes before the game started. Not only did they sell a record number of game tickets, but he beat the previous world record of 9.6 pounds in 10 minutes. "We are thrilled that he [McDonald] chose us and our sandwich program to benefit from the event," said Windsor Food and Fuel Bank President Jane Garibay. "He brought a lot of awareness about our program to the public."McDonald began competitive eating in April 2012 and has competed most weekends since then. In November 2012, the Granby resident participated in an eating contest to benefit hurricane Sandy victims, which was hosted by Bart's Drive-In Restaurant in Windsor. At the event, McDonald mentioned to the owner, Donald Trinks, he always wanted to open a BBQ restaurant and Trinks offered to lease him the space attached to Bart's.As he continued to compete, McDonald continued to save and eventually had enough money to buy the necessities for the restaurant such as the key component -- a smoker. Your '80s comedy dominance has left seismic ripples that still touch our funny bone to this day.One of my favorites: Uncle Buck. My favorite scene: the one with the pancakes.And now, the Mass Avenue Tavern has paid homage to its legacy...Introducing Uncle Buck Pancakes, essentially six pounds of flapjacks, butter and syrup.You'll recall the scene in Uncle Buck where the big guy uses a snow shovel to create some table-sized pancakes (which I tried once... no bueno). These are like that, only slightly less ridiculous (and less Macaulay Culkin-y). But no less awesome.Upon ordering them, Jamie had to sign a waiver, basically saying he was doing this of his own free will, in case his body went into pancake shock while consuming. A few minutes later, a server approached him with five 14-inch-in-diameter pancakes smothered with butter and maple syrup. Total weight: six pounds. On the docket for the afternoon was a trip to Maxie's Deli located at 117 Sharon Street. Maxie's was holding a contest, which they dubbed "Maxie's Pickle Pandemonium", an event to help raise money for the Sumner Redstone Burn Center at Massachusetts General Hospital Burn Center. After two years of holding a "Matzo Ball Mania," Maxie's owner Steve Robbins decided to switch things up and use pickles this year. "When you think of a deli, what do you think of? Pickles," Robbins said. The contestants will be eating small garlic dill pickles from Regal Pickle Works in Worcester. They have a "nice crunch and beautiful taste," Robbins said.The object is to eat as many pounds of pickles as possible within the six-minute time limit. Pickles have to be eaten as is, with no toppings. Participants could eat either sitting or standing in their designated areas, and could drink water during the competition, but the use of utensils was not allowed. If a Participant has a "Roman Incident" (throws up), he or she is automatically disqualified.Would The Bear's utter disdain for pickles slow him down? Would he be able to beat the other participants? The Astro Burger in Hollywood, Pink's Hot Dog's, Fat Sal's (a new favorite), The Beanery in Santa Monica, and Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles! A brief history of Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles:Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles is a Hollywood, California-based soul food restaurant chain founded by Herb Hudson, a Harlem native, in 1975. It is best known, as the name states, for serving chicken and waffles, both together and separately, although they do offer more traditional menu items as well.Soon after it was opened, Hudson had friends in Motown and television such as Natalie Cole who would spread the word to other celebrities; Redd Foxx would tell his audience that he went there. The Los Angeles Times refers to Roscoe's as "such an L.A. institution that people don't even question the strange combo anymore." The New York Times refers to it as a "beloved soul food chain". The Bear vs. Ben and Jerrys Vermonster! Jamie McDonald 2013-05-29 | Nestled in the heart of Vermont's Green Mountains in the town of Waterbury sits an ice cream lover's paradise. The place? Ben and Jerry's Waterbury Factory. This Ice Cream heaven is a working factory producing Ben and Jerry's delicious ice creams year round. There is a gift shop, a scoop shop, and they even offer tours of the factory which from my understanding is pretty informative and very fun. But that's not really why we're here.....we are here to talk about "The Vermonster"!The Vermonster is a large ice cream sundae served in a "Vermonster Bucket" in Ben & Jerry's "scoop shops." Its ingredients are 20 scoops of ice cream, 4 bananas, 4 ladles of hot fudge, 3 chocolate chip cookies, 1 chocolate fudge brownie, 10 scoops of walnuts, 2 scoops each of 4 toppings of your choice, and whipped cream. It contains 14,000 calories, and 500 grams of fat. Apparently there is a Vermonster Challenge which is an annual charity event held by Ben & Jerry's in which teams of four compete to finish a Vermonster and win free ice cream for a year. But I digress.It was a sunny spring morning when a bear wandered into the Waterbury Factory Scoop Shop. Bears are common in the Green Mountains, but as the employees at the scoop shop would soon find out, their was nothing common about The Bear that was in their midst. I'm not entirely sure what flavors of ice cream Jamie chose to be added to the goliath sized sundae. I'm really not sure Jamie even cared. What I do know is this is a really impressive video showcasing Jamie's capacity as well as his ability to fight through the pain of brain freeze. The Bear vs. The Southside 6 Gyro Challenge! Jamie McDonald 2013-05-16 | The Southside 6 Gyro Challenge! As you know (if you follow Jamie on Facebook, Twitter, his website, etc) Jamie is opening a BBQ restaurant in Windsor, Connecticut. What does this have to do with this video you might be asking yourself? Well, allow me to explain.....So Jamie drove his truck from Connecticut to Kansas City to buy a new smoker for his restaurant. Driving such a distance in any sized vehicle, let alone a truck, is a costly endeavor and one that Jamie wanted to minimize. While in KC I lined up a few challenges for him (which you can see here on his Youtube page) none of which had any prize money to help fund his trip. For the 36 hours that he was in Kansas City he agonized over the insane fuel costs he was racking up to haul his smoker back to Windsor but it was a necessary evil. Anyway, Jamie told me to find him some challenges that he could hit up and make a few bucks to help offset the cost of his trip. That's when I found the Southside 6 Gyro challenge.Southside 6 is a party store located 737 S Main St, Bowling Green, Ohio. They aren't the typical "booze and smokes" store. What sets SS6 apart from the rest is the fact that they serve "incredibly good" (Jamie's words) Labanese food as well. This brings us to the Southside 6 Gyro Challenge. Eaters are given 60 minutes to eat six MONSTER gyro sandwiches totaling roughly 12 pounds and then hold it down for five minutes once they have completed it. If they can do it they are awarded $666.00 and a spot on the SS6 wall of fame. Hundreds have tried to conquer the Southside 6 Gyro Challenge, as it turns out Jamie not only knew of the challenge but 9 months ago failed it, but only two have completed it.
