Anaheim Historical SocietyThis is the historic early animation test for the Disneyland "Fantasmic!" Dragon created by the Disneyland Entertainment-Art Department in 1991. Though never intended to be seen by the public, this simple stop-motion animated film, running only a minute and a half, was used to plot the range of motion that would later be "acted out" by the 45-foot animatronic puppet in the show.
The dragon model was built especially for this test by Disneyland artist Vladimir Petrov, consisting of a jointed wooden armature covered with a flexible foam rubber skin. The head was hand-carved of styrofoam with hinged joints for the jaw. In all, the 2' tall puppet had 13 moving parts.
Designer Kevin Kidney animated the puppet frame by frame using a 16mm Bolex movie camera, over a two day period, working through the night. Placed in front of a grid background, the puppet was shot first in profile, and a second time viewed from the front. Having the dragon consume the paper slate was a little inside joke by Kevin Kidney.
The film was a favorite of several Disneyland executives who utilized it as a preview for Fantasmic! at internal company meetings and private presentations. A brief moment of the profile animation was included on a longer promotional reel aired at one time on the Disney Channel. Until now, the film was never been publicly presented in its entirety.
The slate reads "Imagination" River Show, the original planned title, later changed to "Fantasmic".

Local merchants conceived the idea of putting the energies of Anaheim children into "wholesome fun and frolic." Nevertheless, Halloween tricks by neighborhood kids continued, including turning on fire hydrants during the parade and splashing ink on passing cars. In 1949, one old home along the parade route was flooded by a garden hose stuck in the front door mail slot!
Many well-known celebrities have had the honor of being Anaheim Grand Marshal, including baseball superstar Babe Ruth, child actors Jodie Foster, Kami Cotler, and Johnny Whitaker, comedian Buddy Hackett, Mickey Mouse, and even "The Banana Splits!" In 1969, the parade was televised for the first time, live on KTLA, Channel 5.
This year the tradition continues with special new surprises! We hope you'll bring your family out to enjoy this wonderful community tradition.
This year's Anaheim Halloween Parade is Saturday, October 26, 2013. The parade steps off at 6pm at West Street and will travel east down Broadway to Anaheim Blvd.

Visitors gathered at noon to admire this mechanical spectacle set into the main facade of the mock-Gothic tower built in the late 19th century.
After the bells of the carillon have played, wooden figures appear and reenact two historic events: the traditional coopers' dance originally performed to ward off the plague, and a famous wedding celebrated in the square in 1568. An elevator can whisk you most of the way up the 262-foot high tower for a fantastic view of the city.
This tower is featured on the label of Anaheim Brewery's famous Oktoberfest Lager.Hi Neighbor!
