Mit der Fernsehkorrespondentin Ina Ruck, die seit 20 Jahre fast durchgehend aus Russland berichtet und mit Hörfunkkorrespondentin Christina Nagel wollen wir die Entwicklung vom Sowjetreich zum Angriffskrieg in der Ukraine besprechen, vor allem aber auf die Menschen blicken, die all diese Veränderungen miterlebt haben. „Man muss tatsächlich viel unterwegs sein, um dieses riesige Land zu verstehen,“ sagt Ina Ruck. Ihre Kollegin Christina Nagel ist u.a. besonders beeindruckt vom Improvisationstalent der Russen: „Also nicht nur, wie sie mit den Sanktionen umgehen, sondern auch, wie sie z.B. Die NATO hat 2014 beschlossen, ihre Präsenz in den östlichen Mitgliedstaaten zu verstärken, um die Sicherheit dieser Länder zu gewährleisten und mögliche Bedrohungen durch Russland abzuwehren. Auch in Zeiten des Ukraine-Krieges wird als Teil dieser Mission die Luftraumüberwachung und -verteidigung durch die NATO-Luftwaffe in Estland, Lettland und Litauen durchgeführt. Deutschland ist eines der Länder, das sich an dieser Mission beteiligt und Eurofighter-Flugzeuge nach Estland entsandt hat. Die Eurofighter führen Luftpatrouillen durch und können im Bedarfsfall zur Identifizierung und zum Abfangen von verdächtigen Flugzeugen eingesetzt werden. Die Präsenz der NATO-Luftwaffe in Estland und anderen östlichen Mitgliedstaaten soll dazu beitragen, die territoriale Integrität sowie Souveränität dieser Länder zu schützen und die gesamte NATO-Verteidigung zu stärken.

Monatelang war Dr. Kellermayr von Menschen aus der radikalen Szene der Impfgegner:innen bedroht worden. Per Mail und über soziale Netzwerke hatten sie Nachrichten erreicht, in denen grausame Mordfantasien beschrieben wurden. Sie investierte viel Geld in die Sicherheit ihrer Praxis, musste diese aber letztendlich doch schließen – auch um die Unversehrtheit ihrer Angestellten garantieren zu können – und beging schließlich Suizid. Der Vorfall löste weit über die Grenzen Österreichs hinaus einen medialen Aufschrei aus. Welche Mechanismen haben die Ärztin zur Zielscheibe gemacht? Wie sieht die Szene der Menschen aus, die Corona leugnen? Wie konnten sie sich in Österreich zunehmend radikalisieren? ARD-Korrespondentin Anna Tillack hatte sechs Monate vor Kellermayrs Tod die Ärztin interviewt. Jetzt hat sie recherchiert, um Antworten zu finden. Sie hat mit anderen Betroffenen gesprochen. Vor allem Menschen in Gesundheitsberufen sind Hass und Hetze ausgesetzt. Sie bauen ihre Praxen um und besuchen Selbstverteidigungskurse. Die Corona-Pandemie und die anschließende gesellschaftliche Debatte über das Impfen haben die Situation spürbar verschärft. Und heute? 20 Jahre danach fragt der Weltspiegel aus Bagdad: Was ist aus dem Irak geworden?
Nach Husseins Sturz gewann der Iran immer mehr Einfluss im Nachbarland. Vor allem iran-nahe schiitische Parteien und Milizen sind ein gewichtiger politischer Faktor. „Saddam wurde gestürzt, aber dafür haben wir jetzt 10.000 kleine Saddams“ , sagt Reda Hajwal. Er ist Aktivist der Tishreen-Bewegung. Wegen des starken iranischen Einflusses hatten die Tishreen-Aktivisten 2019 die Revolution ausgerufen, gegen die Einheitsregierung. Doch ihr Aufstand wurde brutal niedergeschlagen, mehr als 700 Aktivisten getötet.
Auch die junge Generation im Irak will etwas bewegen und verändern. Sie sind kritisch und kreativ. Junge Rapper schaffen sich ihre Freiräume. Doch Konzerte werden nicht erlaubt. Zu fremd und exotisch ist die Rap-Kultur, die vor allem als Musik der Amerikaner, also der früheren Besatzer, gilt. Aufgeben kommt für sie jedoch nicht in Frage. Im neuen Clip geht es um den Stolz, Iraker zu sein und HipHop zu machen. Trotz aller Probleme, trotz aller seltsamen Reaktionen.
2,5 Tausend US-Militärs sind noch im Land. Zum ersten Mal sagt die irakische Regierung, wir wollen auch, dass sie bleiben. Was jedoch auch bleibt, sind die schlimmen Folgen dieser Invasion. Wenige Monate nach Ende des Irak-Krieges 2003 gingen die Bilder um die Welt: von US-Soldaten gefolterte und gedemütigte irakische Häftlinge im Gefängnis Abu Ghraib. Was ist aus den Tätern und den Opfern geworden?
Auch Sport gehört zum neuen Irak. Ezz El-den Abdel Salam und Mohammed Riad trainieren das Rudern für die olympischen Spiele in Paris 2024. Wassersport auf dem Tigris. Dieser ist zusammen mit dem zweiten wichtigen Fluss im Irak, Euphrat, auch für die Landwirtschaft wichtig. Im Süden des Irak erstreckt sich ein riesiges Feuchtgebiet: das Marschland. Doch das einzigartiges Ökosystem droht zu verschwinden. Zunehmende Trockenheit als Folge des Klimawandels bedroht den Lebensraum der Menschen und vieler Tierarten.
Vor allem kurdische Milizen haben mit Unterstützung der USA den "Islamischen Staat" in Syrien und im Irak bekämpft. Offiziell gilt die Terrororganisation als besiegt. Doch noch immer kontrollieren IS-Kämpfer dünn besiedelte Gebiete.

Viele Menschen dort fordern die Aufklärung über den Baupfusch in der Region. Sie wollen die Verantwortlichen für das enorme Ausmaß der Katastrophe finden. März 2003, bombardieren die USA die irakische Hauptstadt Bagdad. Das war der Beginn des zweiten Irak-Kriegs – und ein Verstoß gegen das Völkerrecht. Für die USA war der Angriff Teil des groß angelegten „Kriegs gegen den Terror“, den Ex-Präsident George Bush nach den Terroranschlägen vom 11. September 2001 ausgerufen hatte. Für die Weltöffentlichkeit bleibt der Krieg vor allem auch wegen der an den Haaren herbeigezogenen Begründung der USA im Gedächtnis: Die Behauptung, der irakische Diktator Saddam Hussein besäße Massenvernichtungswaffen, hat sich im Nachhinein als falsch herausgestellt. Die Folgen des Krieges reichen bis in unsere Gegenwart: Dass zum Beispiel der sogenannte Islamische Staat so mächtig werden konnte, ist eine direkte Folge des Machtvakuums, das die USA in der Region hinterlassen haben. Wir sprechen mit unserem Nahost-Korrespondenten Simon Riesche unter anderem darüber, wie unterschiedlich Menschen im Irak heute über den Krieg denken – und wie Rap made in Irak klingt. Und unsere USA-Korrespondentin Gudrun Engel erzählt uns, warum einige ehemalige Soldaten es gar nicht so schlimm finden, dass die Begründung für den Krieg sich im Nachhinein als Lüge herausgestellt hat.

Seit Jahrzehnten leiden sie dort unter Gewalt. In den 90er Jahren war es die extrem brutale linke Guerilla-Organisation „Leuchtender Pfad“, die für viele Massaker verantwortlich war. Die Terror-Gruppe existiert zwar offiziell nicht mehr, aber ihre Nachfolge-Organisationen sind weiter aktiv und beherrschen den Drogenhandel im Vraem. Doch die Drogen-Mafia trifft auf immer mehr Widerstand durch indigene Bürgerwehren.
Denn viele Menschen wollen nicht hinnehmen, dass der Kokainboom in Europa ihre Heimat zum Einflussgebiet der Kriminellen macht. Deshalb haben sich Indigene der Ashaninka-Ethnie zusammengetan und bewaffnet. Sie patrouillieren mit Macheten und Gewehren in ihren Dörfern, weil sie drumherum keine Koka-Felder haben wollen.

Die Behinderung eines Menschen wird von vielen dort als "Strafe Gottes" gesehen, häufig werden die Menschen aus dem gesellschaftlichen Leben ausgegrenzt. Nicht so aber im südindischen Kerala: Hier werden über 100 Menschen mit Neurodivergenz, also beispielsweise mit ADHS, Legasthenie, Autismus oder Down Syndrom geschult. Das ist ihre Aufgabe: Die Computer mit Daten zu füttern – mit dem besonderen Bonus, dass sie dabei auch gleichzeitig Möglichkeiten finden können, beim Umgang mit dem Computer und mit Künstlicher Intelligenz mit ihren Einschränkungen besser umgehen zu können. Ein Beispiel: Die 24-jährige Minu Manilal leidet an Zerebralparese, das ist eine Gehirnstörung, durch die sie seit Geburt in ihrer Bewegungsfähigkeit stark eingeschränkt ist. Ihre Eltern wussten nicht, wie es weitergehen sollte. Doch durch das Projekt in Kerala hat sie körperlich vieles lernen können – und sie hat ein neues Ziel: Ein Job in der IT-Branche.

Jeden Tag kommen Container mit Kokain aus Südamerika in den Niederlanden und Belgien an, dann wird die Droge weiter in Europa verteilt. Das Problem: Die riesigen Häfen lassen sich kaum noch kontrollieren. Wer regiert in den Niederlanden: noch der Staat oder die Mafia? Das klären wir mit Korrespondent Michael Grytz und wir schauen nach Peru, wo die Koka-Pflanze unter anderem angebaut wird. Der Anbau und die Weiterverarbeitung ist ein lukratives Geschäft, aber indigene Kleinbauen haben jetzt genug, sie wollen verhindern, dass immer mehr illegale Koka-Produzenten ihre Pflanzen auf ihrem Gebiet anbauen, darüber berichtet Matthias Ebert.

Wisente, auch Europäische Bisons genannt, sind eine Rinderart und die größten Landsäugetiere Europas. Auch in den Alpen, in der Schweiz hat es gelebt. Schon seit dem Mittelalter ist es aber weitgehend verschwunden und lebt heutzutage nur noch in kleinen Populationen in Osteuropa. Geplant ist jetzt die Wiederansiedlung dieser Rinderart in der Schweiz. Seit September 2022 leben fünf Wisente im Kanton Solothurn. In drei Phasen sollen die Tiere ausgewildert werden, zunächst noch eingezäunt, später dann frei lebend. Doch was passiert dann? Wenn im Kanton ein Wildtier lebt, dass hier in den letzten Jahrhunderten nicht hingehört hat? Verdrängt es die Kühe? Und: Wer kommt dann für die Schäden auf?

In dieser Doku geht es um Postbotinnen und Postboten, die mit Hundeschlitten beim John-Beargrease-Schlittenhunde-Marathon in den USA um die Wette fahren. Drei Tage brauchen die Teams für die 500-Kilometer-lange Marathon-Strecke. Unsere ARD-Korrespondentin Kerstin Klein hat die Hundeschlitten-Führerin Colleen Wallin dabei begleitet, die schon seit 30 Jahren bei dem Rennen dabei ist. Diesmal nimmt auch ihr Sohn Ero teil. Er hat die besseren Hunden bekommen als Colleen, vielleicht könnte er ja damit gewinnen. Der Marathon hat auch einen geschichtlichen Hintergrund: John Beargrease, vom Stamm der Ojibwe, ist dieselbe Strecke wie die Marathon-Teilnehmer:innen gefahren, um dort, am Lake Superior, im 19. Jahrhundert per Hundeschlitten die Post auszutragen. Im Gegensatz zu den jetzigen Schlitten-Führer:innen hatte John Beargrease damals nur 3 Hunde, Colleen startet mit 12. Dennoch haben die Teilnehmer:innen heute dasselbe Ziel wie einst Beargrease: Die Post, die sie beim Start mitbekommen haben, auch am Ziel auszuliefern.

Viele Menschen in Moldau fragen sich: Wird ihr Land als nächstes – nach der Ukraine – auf der Liste der Länder stehen, deren proeuropäische Ausrichtung mit einem Krieg durch Russland bestraft wird? Und würde diesmal auch der Westen geschlossen hinter Moldau stehen? ARD-Korrespondentin Sabine Krebs war in dem Land unterwegs und hat mit vielen Menschen gesprochen, Menschen, die nahe der Grenze zur Ukraine zu Zeugen wurden von einem Einschlag einer abgeschossenen Rakete aus dem Nachbarland. Sie ist sogar live dabei, als eine Ehefrau erfährt, dass ihr Mann die Kriegsgefangenschaft überlebt hat, von dem sie fast ein Jahr kein Lebenszeichen hatte.

Reporter:innen und Korrespondent:innen der ARD begleiten in der Türkei und Syrien Betroffene, Helfer und Retter. Wie erleben sie die Jahrtausendkatastrophe, wie machen sie weiter? Zum Beispiel in Nord-West Syrien, wo eine Krankenschwester der Weißhelme den kleinen Jungen Musa aus den Trümmern befreit, seit Tagen betreut sie ihn weiter. Unermüdlich versucht er, zerstörte Stromleitungen wieder zu reparieren, will dazu beitragen, den Angreifern weiter zu widerstehen. Und ist das überhaupt möglich? Eine extrem libertäre Bewegung treibt das Konzept von Privatstädten voran, darunter viele US-Milliardäre und einige Namen aus dem Silicon Valley. Die Idee: Alles in dieser Stadt ist privatisiert - von der Müllabfuhr bis zur Bildungspolitik. Es gibt keine Politik, keinen Staat, keine Demokratie, so wie wir sie kennen. Stattdessen sollen Unternehmen, die dort investieren, auch das Leben dort organisieren - und so ihr Umfeld selbst gestalten können: mit maximalen Gewinnen, maximalen Freiheiten und in maximaler Eigenverantwortung.

Nach drei Jahren Pandemie hat Neuseelands Tourismusminister Stuart Nash eine klare Vorstellung darüber, welche Art von Reisenden zukünftig ins Land kommen sollen: „In Bezug auf die Ausrichtung unseres Marketings wird es um hochwertige Touristen gehen“, erklärte er, nachdem die Grenzen für Fernreisende wieder geöffnet wurden. Gute Touristen sollen viel Geld ins Land bringen. Vor allem Backpacker, die zumeist über nicht so große Reise-Budgets verfügen, sind offenbar nicht mehr ganz so gerne gesehen.
In vielen Dienstleistungs-Betrieben sind Backpacker dagegen beliebt – vor allem als günstige Arbeitskräfte, die auf den Farmen und in den Hotels helfen, den Mangel an Arbeitskräften zu verringern.

Das Land im Himalaya übt eine ganz eigene Faszination aus mit seinen Berggipfeln, die die höchsten der Erde sind. Aus der ganzen Welt kommen sie hierher – Wanderer, Bergsteiger und Abenteurer. Und viele von ihnen nehmen die Dienste der einheimischen Bergführer in Anspruch. Rund um die Sherpas ist gar ein richtiger Mythos entstanden. Angefangen mit dem Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, der zusammen mit Edmund Hillary als erster den Mount Everest bestieg.
Frauen hingegen findet man bislang nur selten im Job der Bergführerin. Von etwa 25.000 Bergführern in Nepal sind nur ca. 500 weiblich. Die Branche ist wie die gesamte nepalesische Gesellschaft männerdominiert. Doch es wächst gerade eine neue Generation an Nepalesinnen heran, die trotz vieler Widerstände versuchen, ihren Traum als Bergführerin zu leben. So wie die 21-Jährige Swastika aus Pokhara, die gerade die harte Ausbildung zur Bergführerin durchmacht.

Auch zahlreiche Firmen, die Russland verlassen haben, versuchen nun einen Neuanfang in Kasachstan.
Der Angriff des großen Nachbarn Russland auf die Ukraine löste bei vielen Kasachen Sorgen aus. Wie die Ukraine ist auch Kasachstan zweisprachig. Im Norden wird fast nur russisch gesprochen. Rund ein Viertel der Bevölkerung sind ethnische Russen. Und die Abhängigkeit von Russland ist groß: Kasachstan erlangte 1991 die Unabhängigkeit, ist mit Russland als Zollunion aber noch immer eng verbunden. Präsident Tokajew regiert Kasachstan autoritär.
Als neuntgrößtes Land der Erde zählt Kasachstan heute zwar nur 19 Millionen Einwohner, hat aber eine ausgesprochen junge Bevölkerung. Das Durchschnittsalter: 32 Jahre! Wie denken sie über den Krieg und die Verbundenheit zu Russland?

In Stockholm, Malmö, Göteborg aber auch auf dem Land kommt es seit Jahren zu Gewalt durch verfeindete Banden. Allein gelassene Viertel, Schießereien auf den Straßen. Und eine Polizei, die gerade einmal einen Bruchteil der Fälle aufklären kann, weil kaum ein Bewohner der Problemviertel mit ihr spricht.
Die Bandenkriminalität hat Schweden politisch nach rechts gerückt. Fast alle Parteien fordern härtere Strafen und mehr Polizei. Doch das Thema spielt vor allem einer Partei in die Karten: Den rechtspopulistischen Schwedendemokraten. Die Schwedendemokraten holen bei der letzten Wahl mit 20,5 Prozent das beste Ergebnis ihrer Geschichte.

Die Brillenbären. Doch wer ihn mit eigenen Augen sehen will, muss hoch hinauf – auf die Andenhänge Perus. Dort leben die letzten Brillenbären Südamerikas.
Auf der Roten Liste der Weltnaturschutzunion IUCN wird der Brillenbär als „gefährdet“ eingestuft. Weil Weideflächen für riesige Rinderherden, das Anlegen von Sojaplantagen und Maisfeldern sowie großflächige Kahlschläge der Regenwälder durch Holzkonzerne den Lebensraum der Brillenbären stetig verkleinern, gibt es nur noch wenige der Tiere in freier Natur.
Doch es gibt Hoffnung für das Raubtier, das am liebsten Blaubeeren frisst: Über Monate kamen während der Pandemie lediglich die Wildhüter hier in das Gebiet der Bären. Ohnehin gab es einen großen Wandel: Früher wurden Brillenbären von den Dorfbewohnern gejagt. Sie galten als gefährlich. Heute: undenkbar. Die Hoffnung: Durch sanften Tourismus die Bärenpopulation schützen und gleichzeitig von ihnen profitieren. Kann das funktionieren?

Erinnern an die Menschen, die in den 90er Jahren Opfer des Bürgerkriegs in Peru wurden. Das hat sich Vera Lentz zur Aufgabe gemacht. Vor mehr als 30 Jahren schoss die Fotografin mit ihrer Spiegelreflex-Kamera schwarz-weiß Fotos, die bis heute das Gedächtnis des Grauens in Peru darstellen. In dem Dorf Lucanamarca waren kurz vorher 69 Bauern und Kinder ermordet worden von der maoistischen Guerilla „Leuchtender Pfad“. Heute reist sie zurück und trifft auf Menschen von früher, die von ihrem Schicksal berichten.

Und Südafrika glaubt an viele nachhakt Verbesserungen im Sozialen, in der Wirtschaft, im Fußball. Vieles davon hat sich nicht erfüllt. Auch der erhoffte Schub im Fußball blieb aus. Die Strukturen in der Nachwuchsarbeit wurden wenig gestärkt. Und so ist es vor allem an Privatinitiativen hier Zukunftsperspektiven zu schaffen. So wie es die Young Bafana Soccer Academy tut.
