Making “Progress” on Gun Violence UMD 2024-01-12 | A new University of Maryland initiative called PROGRESS (Prevent Gun Violence: Research, Empowerment, Strategies and Solutions) will study gun violence, offer educational programming on gun safety, issue policy recommendations, and work with communities to reduce firearm violence.PROGRESS was formally launched on Nov. 8 at an event featuring co-leaders Joseph Richardson, the MPower professor of African American studies, medical anthropology and epidemiology, and Dr. Woodie Kessel, professor of pediatrics and the practice of public health. PROGRESS will address a range of topics, including community firearm violence, suicide, domestic violence, safe gun storage, gun trafficking, and the influence of social media on gun violence and conflict. As a UMD student, he founded Food Recovery CSA to redistribute surplus healthy food to students. After graduating, Evan founded Hungry Harvest to rescue, sell and donate produce that would otherwise go to waste. Tackling Grand Challenges: Addressing Climate Change for a Sustainable Earth UMD 2023-04-26 | Across the globe, shifting weather patterns impact farming, water and many aspects of daily life. Awarded one of three UMD Grand Challenges Institutional Grants, Addressing Climate Challenges for a Sustainable Earth aims to develop better tools to forecast severe weather and inform at-risk communities. Tiny, autonomous drones that harness the power of artificial intelligence to work together.In this case, the minute robots could one day provide backup to pollinators like honey bees, potentially securing the world’s food crops as these critical insect species face challenges from fungal disease, pesticides and climate change.
