National Park Services in Point Reyes National Reserve is proposing to remove the 3 mile fence that retains the Tule Elk in a small area, where food and water is reportedly insufficient. Activists and conservationists say that as a result of being unable to reach food and water; during seasonal summer-autumn heat and drought; over 475 of the vulnerable elk have died in the last decade. The proposal to take down the fence sounds like the answer for the tulle elk; however cattle ranchers are in opposition to it. They claim it will trigger the demise of cattle ranching in Reyes Park Nation Reserve. Activists say they don't belong there in the first place; and they have overstayed their welcome.
