Agriculture needs to provide more food from less input and, with agriculture contributing around a quarter of human greenhouse gas emissions; it needs to do so while reducing its impact on the climate.
Professor Pete Smith, Professor of Plant and Soil Science at the University of Aberdeen conducted research that underpins international climate policy choices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. He produced evidence for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on the consequences of climate change for land-use and agriculture. He and his team developed the Cool Farm Tool - a greenhouse gas accounting software tool.
A consortium of the world’s leading agri-food companies (including Unilever, Pepsi Co, Tesco, Heineken, Heinz, McCain, Ben and Jerry’s, Costco and Marks and Spencer) use the software in many countries around the world. These major companies control large parts of the global food industry chain and have ambitious remission reduction targets. The Cool Farm Tool helps them to assess greenhouse gas emissions and devise plans for greenhouse gas emission reduction.Protecting Marine Mammal Populations From Offshore Energy Developments, 2017University of Aberdeen2023-02-14 | Offshore oil and gas and renewable energy developments are integral to the economy and the need to secure sources of energy. However, there are concerns that associated noise - for example construction noise – could pose a risk to marine mammals.
As a result of the University of Aberdeen’s long-term ecological studies of coastal harbour seal and bottlenose dolphin populations in Scotland’s Moray Firth, led by Professor Paul Thompson, these species are now two of the most intensively studied marine mammal populations in the world.
Professor Thompson and his team have been instrumental in informing frameworks for assessing and mitigating the impacts of offshore installations on marine mammals in EU protected areas, allowing comparison of alternative construction options and demonstrating to regulators that proposals will meet international agreements on environmental protection.Biodiversity Field Course, 2017University of Aberdeen2023-02-14 | Our Biodiversity Field Course uses the University of Aberdeen's Field Stations on the Ythan and in the Moray Firth to introduce students to a range of terrestrial, coastal and marine habitats, and the techniques that are being used to study and manage these diverse systems.
