Evolution of Bricks | Ask This Old House youtube.com/user/thisoldhouseBlack Inflatable Square | What Is It? | Ask This Old HouseThis Old House2024-10-07 | In this video, when general contractor Tom Silva brings one of his unique tools to the shop, the crew makes a few guesses at what it might be. Here’s how it went.
When general contractor Tom Silva brought a new tool to the shop, no one knew what it was. It’s black, flexible, square, and has a ball attached to the end. Safe to say, none of the other crew members knew what it was.
Landscape contractor Jenn Nawada said it’s her “fresh air purse.” She fills the bag outside by pumping the ball, and when she needs some fresh air during a day in the office, she releases the air valve and breathes in her stored fresh air.
Host Kevin O’Connor said he uses this tool on days when he can’t get to the gym. He just slides it under his shirt and pumps it up to give his pec muscles a bit more definition. He would definitely need two, though.
Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey thinks it’s a multi-tool. He sits on it at concerts and sports games, and if he can’t see past the person in front of him, he pumps the handle until he’s a few inches taller. The other purpose? A whoopee cushion.

Shower Upgrades for Aging in Place | Ask This Old House youtube.com/user/thisoldhouseA Tribute to Roger Cook | This Old HouseThis Old House2024-08-23 | With tremendous sadness, This Old House bids farewell to our friend and longtime landscape contractor, Roger Cook, who died on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
Roger’s time with This Old House spanned nearly 40 years, from his first involvement in 1982—the show’s second season—to his decision to step down in 2020 because of health issues. Roger was our much-loved colleague, treasured by the entire This Old House community for his soft-spoken but no-nonsense approach to every aspect of landscape contracting. He was always there with the answers we needed.
“I remember every lesson from Roger,” says TOH executive producer Chris Wolfe, whose own garden bears many examples of Roger’s advice. “More importantly, there are millions of people whose lives have been enriched by everything Roger taught them.”
Roger’s love of the outdoors was a constant throughout his life. Born in 1954, he grew up in Burlington, MA, and considered a career in forestry while also working during college with local landscape and tree firms. In 1977, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife management and conservation law from the University of Maine.

We’re in the middle of a kitchen remodel, and one detail I can’t wait to add is a corner shelf at the end of our existing upper cabinets. By extending the countertop, we'll be able to include an overhang for seating and extend our upper cabinets up to the ceiling. So it’s the perfect time to add some visual interest to this area to create a more custom look.
The cabinet will consist of two boards that will make up the back walls. I’ll rip their front edges at 45 degrees to set against the face frame, which will have outside edges also ripped at 45 degrees to set against the existing cabinet and wall. Lastly, I’ll add some shelves and cap their front edge to finish the look before I add crown molding to all the new upper cabinets.

Where to find it? How Shrubs are Harvested Jenn toured Rhode Island Nurseries in Middletown, RI [http://rhodeislandnurseriesinc.homestead.com/]. The nursery specializes in yews, hollys, and a handful of other evergreen shrubs. Build It | How to Build a Box Joint Jig Tom uses an old milk crate that has a series of box joints to demonstrate the amount of glue surface that the joint creates. Each of these “fingers”, as Tom calls them, presents more gluing surface, and therefore more holding power. Building the joint can be done on either a router or a table saw. Tom decides to use a table saw [amzn.to/3Bs64sC] equipped with a dado blade [amzn.to/3rPsFvY]. He and Kevin build a box joint jig which is a simple table saw sled equipped with adjustable stops and a pin. The pin allows for even spacing between dados. Carpenter Nathan Gilbert shows him how to seamlessly repair the damaged tile.
After a homeowner purchased their new home, they set out to remove the previous owner’s handicap grab bars. As a result, their fully-tiled bathroom was left with some holes that needed patching. When they called the team at Ask This Old House for help, carpenter Nathan Gilbert gladly headed out to help them patch up their problem.
Once the gypsum board is vacuumed [homedepot.sjv.io/DKJenj] and wiped off, the tile is ready to be installed. To adhere the new tile, Nathan opts to use a tile repair mortar [homedepot.sjv.io/3evBEX], applying it to the back of the tile using a 1/8 the notched trowel [homedepot.sjv.io/LXMj2L]. Once the tile is laid in, Nathan checks that the depth of the tile matches the others with a level [homedepot.sjv.io/PynBPq]. To grout the tiles, Nathan uses an unsanded grout that comes in a caulking tube [homedepot.sjv.io/75vEOr] for easy application.

How to Transition A Landscape From Spring to Summer | Ask This Old House youtube.com/user/thisoldhouseHow to Restore A Firebox | Ask This Old HouseThis Old House2024-05-26 | In this video, This Old House Mason Mark McCullough helps a homeowner repair their antique firebox to make it safe for use with their new natural gas insert.
There are plenty of ways to breathe new life into an old fireplace, such as installing a gas-burning insert. But that’s only the case if the firebox is safe. When a homeowner faced an issue of a crumbling and cracking firebox, he called mason Mark McCullough for the job.
Where to find it? To prep the space, Mark lays out plastic sheeting [homedepot.sjv.io/XYo4PG] over large furniture and lays out a drop cloth [homedepot.sjv.io/R5dBrX] in front of the firebox. To remove the old concrete and firebrick, Mark begins prying it out with his hands. He then cleans out any branches, or broken masonry and uses a vacuum [homedepot.sjv.io/eKLjG6] to remove the soot.
For the new firebox, Mark will be using yellow fire brick [homedepot.sjv.io/rQmWxj] as it matches best to the original. He then lays the mortar [homedepot.sjv.io/zNoO30] using a masonry trowel [homedepot.sjv.io/LXMEqV]. Mark adjusts his technique as he lays bricks on the Franklin Curve, carefully setting them at a forward facing angle. He then smooths out the mortar joints using a brick jointer [homedepot.sjv.io/1rvzBD].

Host Kevin O'Connor and general contractor Tom Silva enlist the help of carpenter Zack Dettmore to better organize a tool storage cabinet.
Where to find it? To create custom drawer foam inserts, start by laying out tools on the foam board [kaizensource.com/]. Once you’ve arranged the tools, neatly trace around them to create a form guide. Follow the tool outlines with a utility knife and scoop out the foam innards until the tool fits snug in the opening.
Use aluminum u-channels [homedepot.sjv.io/21v76A] and custom cut them to the perfect dimension to divide different drill bits.
To create a U-channel drawer storage 1. Use the miter saw [homedepot.sjv.io/75vKN5] with a metal cutting blade [homedepot.sjv.io/rQmWPD] installed, measure, mark and cut the u-channel to each desired dimension. 2. Smooth the cut edges of the u-channel with a metal file [homedepot.sjv.io/JzMZNv]. 3. Apply the magnetic tape [homedepot.sjv.io/zNoOVG] to the back of the u-channel. The tape is peel-and-stick, so there’s nothing particularly difficult about this step to keep in mind. 4. Place the u-channels in the drawer in the desired orientations. 5. Place the drill bits [homedepot.sjv.io/eKQ2vg] in each compartment.
