Jonas NoellIn this video we will check out the public BETA version of V-Ray 7 to learn what features will come to V-Ray 7 once it's released. Bear in mind that this is a BETA version, so it is subject to changes but it should give us a quite good overview of what we can expect.
V-Ray 7 will offer the ability to render Gaussian Splats directly within V-Ray. You can use this to integrate 3D Objects seamlessly into an Environment.
The enhanced Framebuffer allows now to render Polygon Regions where you can outline complex shapes. This avoids rendering unnecessary parts as your computing power will only be used for your specified areas. Additionally you can now use a new Vignette Effect directly in the Framebuffer and modify that interactively. Also a new Soft-Stop rendering mode allows you to abort the rendering without skipping Denoising or other Post-Effects.
The new Luminaire lights also can speed up rendering and improve noise quite drastically by pre-computing the lighting into an external file, similar to IES lights. Unfortunately now the feature only works for Cosmos assets but there are plans to let users pre-compute for their own needs.
The updated V-Ray Sky allows receives advanced features that allow to control how blue or dusty the sky appears. You can also render the sky from different ground level heights and move the sun below the horizon to create Nautical Twilight Effects.
A newly built in FireFly Removal Algorithm seems very promising in removing unwanted super bright pixels which are a challenge to remove using traditional methods. This works not as a simple post-effect but is embedded in the rendering process so that all your AOVs stay consistent.
V-Ray GPU also gets some nice updates with the ability to render Caustics directly on the GPU which speeds up the process quite drastically compared to CPU rendering. Several other improvements also increase the scene building process and will allow you to see your rendering start faster.
Chaos Scatter also receives some overdue updates with built in distribution maps and the ability to add and remove instances using a brush. Also scenes using Chaos Scatter will now be able to export much faster to VRayScenes or Vantage and various other improvements.
The V-Ray Profiler allows to analyse your rendering and gives you detailled information about which element rendered how long in your scene. This allows for tackling rendering issues and much better understanding what happens under the hood.

We will first build a realistic surface by blending several procedural textures together for a displacement effect. Using this workflow doesn't require any UV preparation and you can simply apply the same approach to any object.
After having our displacement set up correctly we can then move on to build our shader. In order to achieve a realistic result we will use Sub Surface Scattering (SSS) and we will explore the various options that the VRay Material offers for these type of effects.
Finally we will add some finishing touches by using VRayFur to add some tiny hair and complete our finished result.

I will give you 3 reasons for why I personally think that is the case.
We will first discover how we can use Environment Overrides to tweak the appearance of our environment and are able to control various aspects of it separately from each other. We will differenciate Global Environment Overrides that affect the whole scene and Local Environment Overrides which only affect individual shaders.
Afterwards we will see how we can use Override Materials to tweak define in detail how our shaders appear or affect our scene. Using V-Ray we are able to completely break away from bein Physically Correct and completely control all aspects of our shaders.
Finally we will also take a deep dive into Object Properties. Using Trace Sets we are also able to completely define how separate objects affect each other in detail.
From my perspective V-Ray stands out in this regard compared to other render Engines such as Corona, Octane, Redshift, Arnold, Cycles, CyclesX, Eevee and countless others which are often much more restrictive in that regard.

Using those methods you can easily populate your scenes with nice atmospheric effects that look realistic and almost add nothing to your rendering time.
We will first setup our scene using V-Ray's built in Aerial Perspective Effect which is also a fake atmospheric effect. This will give us a good foundation to add our localized fog effects. This allows us to make much faster and more efficient adjustments on a whole asset without the need to replicate those changes on other separate shaders.
We will first prepare our asset and sort all required textures. Afterwards we will set up various material ID's to different parts of our asset in order distribute the textures to the correct places. After this a single shader can be build, collecting all required textures. This is a technique I like to use frequently when working with complex assets as after the initial setup phase it will simplify the future work with your asset tremendously.

For this we will explore several methods.
In my personal opinion default rendersettings in V-Ray are often way too high resulting in very long rendering times without much quality difference. In this video we will optimize those rendersettings to produce faster renderings. Additionally with the help of AI Denoising Techniques we will remove remaining noise to generate a high quality result using much shorter rendering times.
Apart from final rendering you will spend a lot of time in IPR mode while setting up your scene, lighting and shaders. We will explore important techniques which will help you speed up rendering in IPR mode. We will also explore techniques to speed up IPR rendering using V-Ray GPU, where it is important to use the correct settings for you specific rendering hardware.
Lastly using V-Rays powerful Virtual Framebuffer (VFB) we will explore methods which don't require any re-rendering at all and enable us to apply revisions in realtime using Cryptomattes for local adjustments or Light Mix.

We will go through the entire workflow starting with a little theory from the capturing process. We will then discover how to download and use those materials in your scenes and explore all the customization options that the material has. We will then find out what are the advantages and disadvantages in using those materials and compare them with traditional methods such as the standard V-Ray Material. I will finally give you my personal opinion in what kind of situations you should use them and where they can benefit your workflow
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 6 in this demo but you can also use similar techniques for older versions such as V-Ray 5, V-Ray NEXT and V-Ray 3 using a slightly modified workflow.

We will first generate a simple base geometry and use simple modifiers to add details. Then we will generate several base shaders such as different rock and grass surfaces using Quixel MegaScans textures. We will use an automated workflow to place those textures on any kind of surface using Triplanar Projections and UVW Randomizations. Finally we will use simple procedural rules to blend all individual shaders together and create the final result.
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 6 in this demo but you can also use similar techniques for older versions such as V-Ray 5, V-Ray NEXT and V-Ray 3 using a slightly modified workflow. A similar workflow can also be used in other software such as Cinema4d, Maya, Blender and different kind of render engine such as Corona, Octane, Redshift, Arnold, Cycles, CyclesX, Eevee and countless others.

We will start by talking about the model for the leaves and then get the proper maps from Quixel Megascans. Afterwards we will add details with Opacity Maps and NormalMap and finally start to create a realistic looking Leaf Shader completely from scratch. We will be using Translucency Maps to get a realistic appearance and finally use a 2-Side Material for having different textures for the front and back of our leaves.
