Lexus IS-F tribute: Drifting, track test, burnout, 0-100

Driving Enthusiast 2024-02-18 | A tribute to the Lexus IS-F; one of the best sports sedans ever made. The Lexus IS-F was produced between 2007-2014 and was the first proper 'F' model from Lexus.

At the time it was introduced to battle against the likes of the BMW M3, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, and Audi RS4. It was rear-wheel drive and was one of the first cars of its kind to use an eight-speed auto – up until that point six- and seven-speed autos were used.

The heart of it was a 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 producing 311kW (423PS) and 505Nm. With a 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 274km/h (170mph), this was a serious machine. But also quite exotic, showcasing titanium valves and Yamaha-designed heads and intakes.

This is our tribute. It includes a 0-200km/h run at the end.

Australia’s idea of a workhorse; 430kW HSV GTS Maloo #australia

Driving Enthusiast 2024-02-15 | Back in the days Australia used to make its own pickups called utes, until local manufacturing closed down in 2016 for Ford and 2017 for Holden. This was one of the last and arguably one of the best; the 2015 HSV GTS Maloo.

It came with a 6.2L supercharged V8 (Chevrolet LSA motor), producing 430kW and 740Nm. Paired up with 6-speed manual and rear-wheel drive, it was an absolute beast.

The new model is built on a fresh chassis featuring overhauled suspension with thicker dampers, 22mm extra travel at the front, and either 3- or 4-leaf suspension at the back (GLS/GSR and GLX, respectively).

Also a new 2.4L turbo-diesel (same block as before), with power up from 133kW to 150kW and torque lifted from 430Nm to 470Nm.

Nice new interior as well, 9-inch touchscreen, electronic power steering, and lots of thoughtful practicality touches.

The Polestar 2 underwent a pretty significant update for the 2024 (MY2024) model, with the entry single motor models switching to rear-wheel drive. There are also various tech updates inside and underneath, with updated electric motors and inverters helping to increase range and power output.

For this test we're looking at the Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor with the Performance Pack option. The option adds proper Ohlins adjustable suspension, Brembo brakes, and yellow/gold trimmings. Power output is also lifted from 310kW to 350kW. It is a AU$9000 option. We'll have our full review up on the website soon for more details.

You’ve probably heard by now that Kia is going to introduce a new ute, a pickup truck. A source that we know, who has seen the current design stage and current development plans, has revealed lots of juicy details to us for an in-depth preview.

Our source, who prefers to remain anonymous, worked with Kia and has witnessed the new ute and seen the initial specification plans. These details could change as the development process continues, but here’s what we've been told so far.

A name hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, and neither has the vehicle’s existence, but rumours seem to suggest it might be called the Kia Tasman. A trademark is currently set against the name in Australia, registered under Kia Corporation.

The shape and the overall trim and proportions have been applied under guidance from our source, who says these images are “pretty accurate” to the real thing. Again, as of at the current stage of development.

It looks like there will be three main powertrain options. A 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder producing around 157kW and 420Nm is set to be the main option. However, we suspect the ageing ‘R series’ engine might be updated to the 2.0L SmartStream unit by the time it hits the market.

Alternatively, buyers will apparently be offered an optional 2.5-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol four-cylinder as well, developing around 206kW and 422Nm. Both of these units come with an eight-speed automatic.

Interestingly, Kia is set to launch a fully electric version as well. We’re hearing the range-topper will feature a 123kWh battery, sending energy to two electric motors for four-wheel drive. Outputs are a whopping 410kW and 800Nm. Acceleration from 0-100km/h is set to take around 4.9 seconds.

It’s unclear if all options will be presented in Australia, however, our source says Kia is adamant about the new model being a proper workhorse, across the range. There’s talk of a full 3500kg braked towing capacity, and even 3400kg for the electric model, as well as a 1100kg payload as least on the combustion-engined models.

2024 GWM Shanhai Alpha ute spotted in Australia! #gwm #carspotting

Driving Enthusiast 2023-11-29 | Great Wall Motors (GWM) has been spotted testing its upcoming flagship ute in Australia. Called the Shanhai overseas, it’s set to arrive on local shores in the first half of 2024 potentially named the Cannon Alpha.

The camouflaged-wrapped prototype was spotted in Sydney by a DE fan. It’s understood GWM is conducting some local tests before it plans to introduce the model here, although, GWM is yet to make an official confirmation. Local testing doesn’t always mean a local showroom entry is inevitable, but in this case it seems likely.

GWM very recently filed a trademark application for the name ‘Cannon Alpha’ in Australia, on October 23 to be precise. This seems like a fitting name considering it will be larger and more powerful than the current Cannon lineup. The trademark application is listed under Class 12, which covers complete vehicles.
