Fluorescence Exploration Oceans of Opportunity 2022-11-28 | Exploring coral reefs and other marine environments for fluorescent proteins is best done at night. High intensity blue or UV light is used to excite these proteins, which results in a stunning visual display.Using yellow filters, the visible blue light is removed from human or camera view, leaving only the fluorescent excitation spectra. Marine derived fluorescent proteins are used in medicine and biotechnology as biomarkers to map cellular function and may have multiple other uses. Their function in the marine environment is still only poorly understood, as it's a relatively newly discovered phenomenon in many species.
