Thank you for watching!Testing the Sinden Lightgunâs Capacitor: How Long Until Itâs Safe?Widge2025-09-17 | How long does the Sinden Lightgunâs capacitor take to discharge? I put it to the test.
In this video I measure the recoil capacitor from full (20V) down to near zero to find out when itâs safe to open the gun. Youâll see the discharge rate, why it slows over time, and the point where it becomes harmless to touch.
Your results may vary â the capacitor in your Sinden may discharge at a slightly different rate. If you canât measure the voltage yourself, always err on the side of caution and allow extra time. This is not a general test of all capacitors, only the one inside the Sinden Lightgun.

therealwidge.co.ukThis is NOT a Retro Game !?Widge2025-07-12 | Is Super Mario Bros. really a retro game?
We throw around the word retro a lot in gaming circles, but what does it actually mean? In this video, I explain the surprising truth, explaining why games like Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog donât quite fit the label we usually give them, and I show you an example of a true "retro" game.
Got thoughts on this? Leave a comment below.
All the gameplay footage used in this video was recorded by me while actually playing these games. Can you name every game I used? And for a bonus challenge, can you identify the one true "retro" game (apart from Xeno Crisis)?

It features 8 single-player paintball missions, a lightgun with built-in recoil and bolt-action reload, and a menu system with player profiles, weapon upgrades, and scoring.
In this video, I take a close look at the hardware, show how the game plays, and explore its various levels, features, and quirks. If youâre into lightgun games, early 2000s electronics, or unusual standalone systems, this oneâs worth checking out.
Compatible with composite video CRT TVs only. Gameplay captured from real hardware being played on a CRT, and using a Retroscaler 2X to feed the video to my PC. Note that, when being played, the screen flashes with every pull of the trigger. But to save my viewers from the annoyance of potentially seizure-inducing strobes, i removed the flashes in the edit.

The main script takes a group of still images and turns them into a colour-safe animated GIF that works reliably on the SAROO menu
The second script converts almost any audio or video file into a background music track suitable for SAROO, making it easy to personalise your setup even further.
Both scripts are free and easy to use. FFmpeg is required.

It's been over a year since I first announced the Marbella Vice project for Hypseus Singe on this channel. I'm very happy to say that the game is jsut about ready for release, and will be available very soon!
Make sure you're subscribed so that you find out about it here first!
And I have to say that the project owes an awful lot to @LutherGond, the man responsible for the two-player American Laser Games releases as well as new Hypseus shooting games Fast Draw Showdown and Gallagher's Gallery. Luther took the reins of this project and finished what I started. I think I can safely say that the game wouldn't have been finished without all of the work that he put in.
This video is a full playthrough of the game using a near-final build. This is pretty much what you will expect to see when you get to play the game for yourself. But a few tweaks and minor fixes will inevitably happen as we put it through its paces. I'm using a Sinden Lightgun on a Raspberry Pi 5.
Marbella Vice was made by Picmatic, and features audio tracks in both Spanish and English, the language can be changed in-game. Many thanks go to Vanfanel who provided us with Spanish text translations for the interface.

A note: I did censor the nudity at the end of the game in this video (this is an inclusive family-friendly channel after all), but the game itself is not censored. I hope you don't mind either way.

I'm playing this on a Raspberry Pi 5
Air Rescue is a nice helicopter rescue game for the Sega Master System where you play the role of a helicopter pilot rescuing people from perilous situations, while avoiding enemy fire.
I had a great time playing this, even though the controls are a little on the sluggish side, i was still able to complete the game on both normal and hard difficulty levels.

Thank you for watching!Chaos Control - Sega Saturn - full playthrough - Deutsch German ăŤăŞăšăłăłăăăźăŤ Light Gun Virtua StunnerWidge2025-03-05 | I'm going through some of the different versions of Chaos Control in order to provide a reference to demonstrate differences between each version of the game.
This is my playthrough of the Sega Saturn version from start to finish. I'm playing this on a real Sega Saturn, and recorded via a Retrotink 5X and RGB SCART. And, as this version was a multilingual European release, I've chosen to sample the German audio for this recording.
This version of the game can be played with either a standard controller, a mouse or a lightgun. As this is the only version that supports lightguns (if you count the Japanese "Chaos Control Remix" as the same version as this... which it is), I am using the Saturn's "Virtua Gun" (aka Stunner).
In this incarnation, the entire "Virtual" section of the game is missing, which amounts to four playable levels. Which means that the game is missing a good deal of content, but not as much as was missing from the PS1 version.
This version of the game is also the only one to include a cooperative two-player mode and you can see that the HUD has been rearranged to allow for two player's information to be displayed. If you play as two players, then the each player uses only one laser beam, as opposed to two that a single player would have.
You are also offered three difficulty levels and up to 9 extra lives... and you'll need them! Even on the easiest skill level, the enemies are far more aggressive than on the other versions of this game, and they eat their way through your health meter very quickly. You also don't recover any lost health between levels, which you would have done at certain milestones of the CD-i and other versions.

This is my playthrough of the Sony Playstation version from start to finish. I'm playing this in an emulator on a Raspberry Pi 5. And, as this version was released only in Japan, all of the dialogue is in the Japanese language (but the in-game robot computer voice is still in English)
This version of the game can be played with either a standard PS1 controller or a mouse, so I am using a mouse.
Many levels are missing, including the entire "Virtual" section and the first level of the "Space" section along with some cutscenes. That adds up to five playable levels missing from this release, making it the shortest version of all.
The graphical quality is also very poor. So much worse than even the MS-DOS version. This appears to be due to some very heavy compression as compression artifacts are observable throughout.
I can only assume that the video quality and reduction of content are symptoms of limited storage available on the disc, although the storage medium is the same as on the other console formats, and the CD-i managed to retain all of the video content at a higher quality.
A note on the aspect ratio - As with most games of the era, this game was made with 4:3 screens in mind, but this is presented in a slightly letterboxed form within that frame and appear to be close to 3:2. I didn't want to "correct" the aspect, so for this video I enlarged the picture to fill the vertical space without distorting it. I haven't made any other alterations.

This is my playthrough of the MS-DOS version from start to finish. Played on a fairly modern PC via DOSBox. This is the version you would be playing if you bought it from Steam, including a DOSBox wrapper.
This version of the game can only be played with a mouse (or similar pointing device, such as a trackball). It allows for only "relative" cursor control, so "absolute" pointing devices, such as touchscreens or lightguns, will not work effectively.
All of the levels from the CD-i version are present, but some of them are significantly shorter. I did try the "Advanced" skill level as well, in case they were shortened only for the difficulty setting, but they were no different.
The graphical quality is also very much reduced. I believe this is because the enemies and scenery are being rendered during gameplay - I have observed drops in performance when there are many enemies on screen at once; an issue that wouldn't happen if it was all pre-rendered video as with the console editions.

This is my full playthrough from start to finish. Played on a Philips CDI 210, and recorded via a Retrotink 5X and RGB SCART.
The game can be played with a gamepad, mouse or trackball. The back of the disc case recommends a gamepad as the subjective "best" way to play, but i suspect a mouse would be a bit friendlier. Unfortunately I don't have a CD-i mouse so had to settle for the gamepad.
The game doesn't officially support a lightgun. Although one can technically be used, there's no way to calibrate it, so it wouldn't be a great experience.
A note on the aspect ratio - As with most games of the era, this game was made with 4:3 screens in mind. All of the cutscenes are presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio, but the playable sections are letterboxed within that frame and appear to be close to 16:10. I don't know if that was intentional, but other console ports of this game are all presented in 4:3 regardless. However, i didn't want to "correct" the aspect, so for this video I enlarged the picture to fill the vertical space without distorting it. I haven't made any other alterations.

If you are interested in learning more about how I found this information then feel free to check it out. at therealwidge.co.uk/2025/02/chaos-control-in-depth-look-at-1995.html
Ultimately, the conclusions here are that the CD-i version is the most complete, and best quality version of the game, but if you want to play with a lightgun and/or a friend, then the abridged Saturn 1996 releases are for you.
One small correction: The CD-i version was not just an English language release. French and German translations (at least) were made available in their respective countries.
I have been studying and researching the topic for another project and found that online information sources were propagating incorrect information. As I am probably now one of only a handful of people, outside of the original developers, that has learned so much real information about this game's video content, i felt i was in a position to make informed corrections to the game's Wikipedia article. Unfortunately, as there is no other source for the information outside of my own scrutinisations, my edits were reverted due to lack of citable evidence. - even though the old incorrect information had no citations!. So I wrote the blog post to present as a citable source of information, presenting the information i learned as concisely as I can. And i thought that an accompanying video would be a good thing, so this is it.
I expect this video will have very limited appeal, but I don't care. i'm not a view chaser. But if you found the info useful, then feel free to like and consider subscribing. And if you think someone you know will benefit from the information here, then share a link.
All gameplay in this video was recorded by me using a Retrotink 5X. The CD-i and all three Saturn versions were played on real hardware and RGB scart cables for the capture. The PlayStation version was played in an emulator on a Raspberry Pi, and the MS-DOS version was played using DosBox on a Raspberry Pi.
Thanks for watching. And if you read to the end, well done. :)

Thank you for watching!SPACE ROCKS! My new game for Hypseus Singe!Widge2025-01-17 | Official Announcement. New game for Hypseus Singe - SPACE ROCKS!
In my ongoing quest to bring variety to the Singe systems, I've created Space Rocks. The basic concept may not be brand new, but this game doesn't use any reused assets from any other source. Barring the fonts, all assets used in the game, including every sprite, sound effect, piece of music and video clip was made especially for Space Rocks.
My hope is that this will inspire others to make different types of games from the standard QTE reaction games.
Whilst there are some great community-made QTE games for Hypseus and Singe, the format is now so riddled with shovelware that finding and discovering the great examples has become difficult. So I wanted to show people what else could be done with Hypseus.
Please get creative people. Lua isn't that hard to work with :)
Space Rocks requires Hypseus Singe v 2.11.4 at a minimum and should be run on hardware at least as capable as a Raspberry Pi 5 (the game was painfully slow running on a Pi 4). It will work on Windows, Linux, and Mac, wherever Hypseus can be used.
Space Rocks is free to download and play. Don't pay anyone for it. Please be sure to check the readme file for setup and usage instructions, and be sure to read the license for conditions of use and distribution.
You may not use this game or its materials for commercial purposes without the express permission of the author (that's me).

Search YouTube for "Video Driver" and there are plenty of videos discussing the system's existence, many of them describing it as "forgotten". It's pretty well remembered for a forgotten thing.
The Video Driver system, known as the Family Driver (ăăĄăăŞăźăăŠă¤ăăź) in Japan, was released in 1988 and saw two English language games and three Japanese games. A third English language game was never released but is included with the simulator for a total of six experiences. It wouldn't be hard to add more if someone would like to make new video content.
This will require Hypseus version 2.11.3 or later (at the time of release, 2.11.3 is the latest version).

The video features gameplay footage from several N64 games of the time. There is also some commentary in Spanish. Unfortunately, I don't understand Spanish so I can't say what is being said so hopefully the YouTube robots can produce some helpful subtitles.
"10 para 10" translates to "10 for 10", which can have multiple meanings in this context. It might refer to the number of games showcased in this video. I haven't counted them, but it seems like the right number. it can also be a way of indicating a "top marks" rating for the console, i.e. "10 out of 10".
I recorded this directly from my own VHS using a RetroTink 5X.

Thank you for watching!Captain Power VHS Game Simulator - Released for Hypseus!Widge2024-10-19 | This reimagining of the 1980's VHS-based Lightgun game has finally been released Hypseus. Playable on Windows, Mac, Linux, (including Pi) using mouse, controller or modern lightgun (e.g. Sinden).
The game is completely free of charge. So don't pay anyone for it!
Accept my apologies for the delay, we were hoping that RetroPie-Setup would apply an update to the Hypseus installation script, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen very soon. The update would have simplified the setup process for these types of "multi-games" (a group consisting of Captain Power and ActionMax so far) on Raspberry Pi, but we decided to push ahead with the release anyway.
It's not really "a" game, but rather "many" games, each video forming it's own game. Adding new games if and when new videos are created by the community will be straightforward, and I hope to see some more fan-made contributions to the Captain Power suite in the future.

The Spanish phrase "el futuro estĂĄ en juego" translates to "the future is at stake," but in this context, it can also be interpreted as "the future is a game." This duality of meaning, combining 'at stake' and 'game,' aligns perfectly with Nintendo's emphasis on the future of gaming.
Released in 1993, this promotional VHS cassette was distributed in Spain alongside the magazine SuperJuegos, featuring upcoming titles for the Super Nintendo and Game Boy. Notable games included Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Mario Kart, and The Legend of Zelda for Game Boy. It also highlighted advancements like the Super FX chip used in StarWing and provided tips and tricks for various games, such as passcodes for PilotWings and which pipes in Super Mario Land lead to hidden coin-filled rooms.
Leaning heavily into the "future" theme, the video contains music from Back to the Future, because subtlety is for those buzzheads at Sega.
I recorded this directly from my own VHS using a RetroTink 5X. Let's hope the YouTube robots can manage the closed-caption translations!

Minesweeper uses no external sprites, all the game graphics are assembled in the code, The only external data source is the video file which is small enough to meet github's size limitations, so it is included with the game files on DirtBagXon's github repository.

Setting the dip in the cfg reveals a "Flag" button to press in game. Make sure your ROM is a non-merged parent ROM, not a clone, of the game. I explain in the video how to identify if your ROM is merged, if Supermodel is running a clone and how to remove clones from a merged ROM.

Look for "supermodel3".
Using the FPS Monitor ------------------------------------ - If you want to enable the FPS monitor then you need to add a parameter to the emulator's command line. - Open up the file "/opt/retropie/configs/arcade/emulators.cfg" in a text editor, find the line that begins "supermodel3" and add "-show-fps" to the command line before %ROM%. - Mine looks something like this: supermodel3 = "XINIT:/opt/retropie/emulators/supermodel3/supermodel3 -borders=1 -show-fps %ROM%" - Or you could conceivably duplicate the line and give it a slightly different name so you have one that monitors the framerate and one that doesn't.
- To monitor the framerate you need to access the Pi's command line remotely via SSH using something like PuTTY. - Launch the game as normal, then from the terminal type: "tail -f /dev/shm/runcommand.log" - This will then start printing the contents of the log to the terminal window and each time a new line is added to the file, that new line is displayed in the terminal. It updates approximately every second. - When you want to stop monitoring hit "ctrl+c".

Thank you for watching!Point Rescue Arcade - w/ Sinden Lightgun - Full PlaythroughWidge2024-04-12 | Point Rescue Arcade is a great rail shooter made in the style of Virtua Cop.
It can be played on the itch.io website right in your browser, or there are downloadable Windows and Linux versions available too. Although it describes itself as a "Web Demo", there's enough here to keep you entertained until the full game makes its appearance.
As described on the website : "Point Rescue Arcade hearkens back to light gun shooters of the 90's. Bright, chunky graphics and fast mindless action. Uncover the dodgy dealings of City 2 through various missions in a variety of bright and colourful environments."
Thank you for watching!Metro Cop - w/ Sinden LightgunWidge2024-04-05 | Metro Cop is a great little game that you can play for free over at helpcomputer.itch.io/metro-cop It was made by helpcomputer0 for itch.io's 2018 Demake Game Jam where it actually took 1st place for it's reimagining of the first Virtua Cop game as a 2D pixel-based mouse cicker. You can find out more about the event at itch.io/jam/demake-jam
For all its flaws, it's really not a bad game, made for use with a mouse but perfectly playable with a lightgun, such as the Sinden which I use. Check it out for yourself.

Thank you for watching!Rescue Mission - Sega Master System (emulated) with Sinden LightgunWidge2024-03-15 | Rescue Mission for Sega Master System.
I'm playing this on a Raspberry Pi 5 using the Sinden Lightgun. I've done my best to remove the screen flash from the video and I think I did a decent job, but you may see a little bit of flicker on some grey areas of the track as a result.
Rescue Mission is a fun lightgun shooter for the Sega Master System where you play the role of aerial support protecting your army medics as they rescue wounded soldiers in enemy territory. The medics carry no weapons so its up to you to kill any enemies that threaten them on their mission. be careful not to shoot your wounded allies yourself as you can kill them.
You have three medics to defend, serving as "lives". If one dies then its the turn of the next to carry out the rescue mission until either the mission is complete or all of your medics die.
Each medic has a distinct character trait. The first is Mike who is slow but steady. The second is Steve who is lazy so frequently stops for a rest, and the third is John who is the fastest of the three.
There are five stages in all. I completed the game in Easy mode and took it down to my final man. I believe the ending can vary depending on how many medics survived and how well you did.

Thank you for watching!Missile Defense 3-D - Sega Master System gameplay (emulated) with Sinden LightgunWidge2024-03-08 | Missile Defense 3-D for the Sega Master System.
Here I'm emulating this game on a Raspberry Pi 5 because I don't have the 3D glasses that are needed to play the game on real hardware, and it makes it easier to record the footage for you.
One of my favourite lightgun games, this is an easy game to just pick up and play (excepting want for the 3D glasses!). The game was made during the cold-war era so features a strong anti-nuclear weapons message. You are defending both sides of a nuclear conflict by shooting down missiles that the enemies lob at each other, before they take out the civilian populations.

I hope to see you again soon.Marbella Vice for Hypseus Singe: Coming Soon.Widge2024-03-01 | I'm working on the Hypseus Singe port of Marbella Vice. Still a long way to go, but some progress made so far.
Trying to keep it visually similar to the original version as seen in the WinUAE emulator, but hopefully a more enjoyable experience.
Not shown in the video are the lives-lost skull icons that appear above the score as lives are lost, but I have used the same image in the settings menu for the cursor. The settings menu includes optional crosshairs, and a bullet-count option, but it may see some changes, like a different cursor and a free-play option.
You should be able to see my own animations. Gun flash sprites for hits, dust clouds for misses, bullets flying out of the ammo area, and the colour-changing "Exit" text on the settings screen.
The font used is based on MoonKnight, an Amiga font, as it closely resembles the one used on the Amiga version. I've made some modifications to it to make it a good fit here.
The bezel you see me use here is not my own design, I found it online but I don't like it mainly because the images are distorted from having been squashed. If you can make a really nice looking bezel, I'd love to see it.
