Sony RX100 VII Video: My Experience Dave Dugdale 2019-11-06 | Sony RX100 VII Pricing: bhpho.to/33pB6PJI own the RX100 V which has a 24-70mm lens, I wanted to try the new RX100 VII because of the 200mm lens. When shooting crew from another boat I need a gimbal most of the time, I am not sure there is a way to shoot a full frame camera at 200mm on a gimbal. If there is let me know. I like the 200mm so I can isolate individual rowers.If the crew practice is a couple hours I have no problem holding the Crane M and the Sony RX100 VII for the entire time, but I don't have to, because the battery will run out before that at a little over an hour so I get a break changing batteries.I love using the zoom function from the handle of the gimbal and also hitting start and stop. It is really nice not having to touch the camera. To do this you just need a cable from the camera to the gimbal.Shooting at 4k is really nice on this camera, however when you do the screen with dim from full brightness to normal brightness so it can be challenging to see the screen.The RX100 V that I own has a built in ND filter which is very handy because you can't get above f11 on this camera, but they had to take the ND filter out on the VII to make room for the larger lens. If you try to shoot 4k 24fps or 30 fps the outdoor shots are normally to bright, so the only thing I can do it raise the shutter speed from 50 to 100-200. It is a little bit noticeable with a sport like rowing.If it had 4k 60 I might need an ND filter because I would have the shutter up at 125th, perhaps it will have that in the next model. I would be up around 1/125th shutter that would put me in that 100-200 range I have been shooting with.I know you can buy ND filters for this which is something I have not tried yet. My Kingston Card Reader Started Ruining Cards Dave Dugdale 2019-09-17 | ProGrade Digital Dual-Slot UHS-II SDXC USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C Card Reader: bhpho.to/31pZUpXI've had the Kingston USB 3.0 High-Speed Media Reader for so long I can't remember what I used before that. Coming in at only $18 it has served me well until recently. It has been a Top Seller on B&H for years so I know many of you have it.The newer SD cards I use now have two rows of pins for increased speed, recently one of my SanDisk cards had one of the thin plastic separators on the back fall off, I didn't think to much of it until I noticed that my Sony a7Riii would not allow the card to seat all the way in the camera. The cards I use cost way more than the Kingston reader. I noticed that when I insert the cards in the reader it feels a bit rough. I had a friend come over and give me some drone footage and his SD card also had a plastic piece come off. Now I was thinking it was my card reader ruining cards.So I replaced it with a reader that is 4 times the cost. The speed of off loading my cards is the same, however when I insert the cards in the new ProGrade Reader it feels much smoother.Besides not ruining my expensive cards, I was willing to pay more for the following reasons. The biggest is I can off load two SD cards at the same fast speed at the same time. The Kingston showed up as 4 drives on my Windows computer while the ProGrade only shows up as one which is less confusing. Also it has a nice magnet on the bottom so I don't have to Velcro it in to place. My advice if you don't own it yet, just buy it.Tamron should have put a G master on it, because this acts like a Sony lens, you can update the firmware within the Sony camera body, it has fast AF, it has eye AF, and I had to test it but all the lens correction happens right inside the body, not only for stills via Lightroom but for video files too, the barrel distortion correction works, the shading correction works and I couldn't verify the CA correction works because I couldn't find any.The two things I dislike about the lens are the lens hood, it was taking me way too long to figure out how to put it on, most lens hoods you keep turning it while you are thinking about something else, but this one I had to put two labels on it. Also it is taking me sometime over the past month trying to figure out which barrel is for zoom and which for focus. The bokeh balls have concentric rings.My trio of zooms have changed recently, when this happens I like to see which lens to use when I have overlap, for instance when shooting around 70mm do I use my Sony 70-200 or my new Tamron 28-75mm?When picking between the Tamron 28-75mm and the Sony 16-35mm when I am between 28-35mm, the Tamron won every single time, the biggest differences came when shooting wide open. The Sony 16-35mm was so bad at f4 I was like wow note to self do not use this wide open between 28-35mm.When picking between the Sony 70-200 and the Tamron at 70mm - 75mm, the differences were not as big. When shooting at 600mm I needed a better tripod.I have a problem in crop mode at 400mm in windOSS seemed to be similar to my 70-200mm f2.8 from SonyI like the focus ring better on my 70-200 the 100-400 feels like it spins too easily.It doesn't seem heavy, especially compared to my 70-200. 1395g vs 1480g for 70-200 f2.8AF seems reliable, even in lower light, but I didn't try in really dark situationsIt seems sharp in my 4k videos and my 42MP stills, no disappointment there. In all the reviews I read no one complained about sharpness (except one person)Shoot at sunset I did have to push the ISO a bit so it that could be an issue for like indoor sports with the slow f stop, but if you want faster you are going $12kBokeh seems nice, similar to the 70-200mmRead all the reviews on B&H, I saw several people saying they had to return for repairs. That is a hard question to answer because when you ask it many other questions come up, such as bottlenecks for everyone's computer might be different depending how they have their drives setup to their CPU to what type of footage the edit.I am going to be using Resolve so my results might be different if you use Premiere Pro.I recently had two NVMe drives fail in my system, not sure why because they are operating in their normal temperature range and I am not seeing a lot of people having failures on the Amazon or B&H reviews. Since I am moving drives around today I thought I would run some tests, not benchmarks because I am not computer tech YouTuber.They are a ton of ways you can setup your video editing system, for instance I have a ton of them, NVMe drive for my OS, SDD for my media drive, NVMe drive for my scratch drive, SSD for my export drive, and two HDD for backups. I have to make sure all camera settings match, make sure the light does not change if I shoot them at different times, lenses can change the color so I have to make sure the lenses match in color or use the same lens in lighting that does not change.Testing for changes in all colors is pretty time consuming, it is not only the hue but saturation, luminance, contrast, gamma curve and you have to look at all the color profiles. I think as you can see the sliderone with the Motion Module actually did keep up in terms of travel distance given 4 count or one measure of the somewhat slow music I used on the original review. But where it doesn't keep up is the speed of the slide, at first I was using 70% speed but when I started putting the clips on the timeline that was too slow and quickly started using 100% speed.I am terrible at using my sliderone because I can never get a smooth slide, it would take 5 or 6 passes to get one good slide, but with the motor first slide and I am done. Now the Konova took easily 3 passes to get a good one, it just seemed like the smaller slider showed my mistakes more when doing it by hand.Here is the thing, yes not having a fast speed does bother me, but I never used my long Konova because it was too hard to take everywhere, but this little thing is easy to take everywhere.With the motor doing the hard work of keeping it smooth, I can concentrate on other things like exposure, try a different picture style or many I want to pan the head to track an object. Basically with a short slider you have to get closer to a closer object. It can handle a a6500 with a fluid head vertically, but with a 1DX with a 24-70, it really complained about it. Since it has a motor he can actually get out of the shot and eliminate the shadow. It connects to the phone really fast, there’s no Wi-Fi to deal with It makes hardly any noise, unless it is struggling. Hard to get it really low to match the previous shots Sometimes the battery seats at a angle but still works, battery last forever. EIS is so good it is gimbal like, without the gimbal. I could see people updating their old GoPro just for this.But how does it compare to optical image stabilization from Sony X3000? Driving with 2.7k EIS they seem equal in smoothing out the small bumps. However if you are looking for great stabilization with good resolution, then the Sony wins over the GoPro at resolution even though the GoPro is out spec'ing it at 2.7k 60 (Hero6) vs 1080 60 (Sony), and when you are running with the two the Sony beats the GoPro for stabilization as well. But the skin tone for the Sony are not as pleasing as the GoPro.Detail: The Yi sharpness settings seem more aggressive than the GoPro, but both "lows" values seem to be the same giving me the impression that is low actually means no sharpness added. Resolution: It seems like they are the same sensor. With them both on low sharpness they look identical. When both are on Medium they Yi seems sharper. When you go from 4k to 2.7k the street signs look really out of focus. At 2.7k 60 EIS the Yi seems sharper in the driving shot with same sharpness applied. There is a big sharpness difference between GoPro 1080 60 and 4k 60, that is why I want to upgrade to a 4k 60 camera. I can't see a difference between 4k 30 and 4k 60 on the gopro.Exposure: in many of my test when sun is hitting the lens the Yi's contrast lowers a lot while the GoPro seems to have tight hold on the contrast. Dynamic range, they might have the same sensor but they way they process the image is different, it seems like the GoPro has more perceived dynamic range.Color: The GoPro saturation sometimes is out of control, I don't remember a GoPro with this much saturation before.WB Color: both get it wrong sometimes, Yi seems better in artificial light where the GoPro wins outside. Yi can go green outside and is sometimes too accurate, it takes the warmth out of the morning sun, while GoPro can go warm and too saturated. Overall I would say GoPro wins for what I shoot.Banding: I would say that they are about the same for most of my tests, however watch the sunrise time lapse, I can see more lines of banding on the Yi, also look how the bands move as the Yi adjust exposure more erratically, and the GoPro has a nice smooth exposure ramp. Driving in to the sun the Yi seems to have a cyan issue around the sun that the GoPro doesn't have, and yes sometimes the GoPro has more sun streaks than the Yi.Battery surprising they tracked about the same each time I went through a charge cycle considering that the GoPro has a brighter screen, I think it wins.Screen Brightness: GoPro wins, both dims after 1 minute (power), very useful for framing when it is that bright!Construction: The Yi latch on case came off. GoPro feels better made.Time Lapse: the GoPro wins because of the smoothness of exposure at sunriseGoPro less lens flare streaks.GoPro has a lot more CA than Yi in terms of video. However when you look at the raw stills, (assuming the sensor Sony IMX377), the lens on the Yi has more CA but is slightly sharper. The lens appears to be different, one is 2.66mm and the other is 3mm.Codec: GoPro Protune 80Mb/s H.265 (no Protune) 66Mb/s, Yi 135Mb/s H.264. The HEVC files 40% smaller than the Yi files. Compression artifacts that I see appear to be equal, not bad considering the 40% savings in file size. GoPro HEVC only used 3% of my new very power computer CPU during playback, but the Yi h.264 used 15%.Resolve: If you are using Resolve you need to make sure you force the footage levels to full, because auto does not get it right. They both clip at 100IRE, there are no super whites to recover. Switching from Premiere to Resolve One Year Later Dave Dugdale 2017-09-29 | Pricing on Blackmagic Resolve Studio: bhpho.to/2fCS4qe Many people have asked me to do an update on my switch from Premiere Pro CC to BlackMagic Resolve Studio for both editing and color a year after I switched.The main reason I switched last year was Adobe was not updating the color tab as fast as BM was upgrading their editing tab. Considering how Adobe's quarterly profits seem to be speeding up while the speed of Lightroom is slowing with 42MP cameras, that to me was the writing on the wall, if all these Adobe engineers are sitting around and not totally rewriting Lightroom from scratch to make it faster how the heck are they going to improve their PPro color tab to keep up with BM pace?I have no regrets one year later. Things are happening like I thought, BM is busting their @ss and Adobe is sitting on theirs. I was a beta tester for Premiere and found an issue they had with saturation, they acknowledged the problem was there and it never got fixed. I kid you not, my Adobe contact said there was only one person that could fix that issue and he was on vacation when I asked about it, I guess it was a long vacation.Quick history I started on Pinnacle, moved to Sony Vegas, then Premiere Pro and now Resolve.For anyone thinking of switching like I did, the first question you might have is performance. I am not going to lie when I first switched to Resolve 12 and it was slow when using the Sony XAVCS codec. But what I lost in time during the edit of that footage I gained back in the color tab when grading Slog. I am not saying that Premiere's Lumetri color tab is slow, I personally just got faster results using Resolve.When Resolve 14 beta came out after NAB and promised a massive speed increase I was all over that once I finished my last 12.5 project. I had no problem dealing with the occasional beta crash in 14 because, oh my 14 was so fast! The way I look at it is, Resolve 14 is just as fast than Premiere now, and it some cases like playback of Mini Ursa 4.6k raw footage it is actually much faster in Resolve.So in the past year I have really honed my keyboard shortcuts and I am editing faster than I was in PPro.I am not making this video to get a whole bunch of people to switch over since I feel perhaps a bit isolated and lonely because I am in a very small minority of people using Resolve as an editor. I am doing this because people asked how it was going for me.There are somethings in Resolve that drive me a little nuts because it does not behave like Premiere did but also there are some feature and tools in Resolve that Premiere will probably never have. I would call the Face Refinement tool a game changer for someone like me that does not own a color panel and can generate windows around faces, eyes, quickly, it does it all for you and on my new computer it can analyze it so fast.On the flip side I would say PPro can handle more video and audio codecs seamlessly than Resolve, but like I said Resolve is updating quickly.Take some time and think about this major decision before switching because switching to any new NLE sucks because you lose all your muscle memory.Things that might be preventing you from switch from another NLE might be, multi-cam, collaboration, integration with Audition and After Effects, and plugins. Some people might live or die with with a certain plugin they absolutely need that perhaps Resolve does not have, I totally get that.Starting with Resolve is easy, just download it for free and start cutting with it. If you really like Resolve and you need some extra things like noise reduction and lens flares, then pay a one time fee of $300. I say one time fee beacause I have asked this question many times with BM but it sure seems like they will never charge you for an upgrade, so once you pay that $300 just once.Crashes, since the final version of 14 came out, it has not crashed on me and that is with two different computers. They have this feature that is called live save and you never have to save it does it in the background.I shot this volleyball game for fun on my Sony RX100 Mark V total edit time was about 45 minutes.
