More about Gaultois:

Gaultois is a small settlement in the Coast of Bays area in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Gaultois had a population of 100 people in the 2021 census. The town has a K-12 school called Victoria Academy (as of 2022-23, there are 4 students enrolled), as well as a fire department, public library, Lion's Club, and town hall. The town is only accessible by ferry or helicopter. The provincial government ferry runs from the nearby town of Hermitage several times daily and the crossing takes approximately 20 minutes. This ferry also services the more remote community of McCallum once to twice daily with a crossing time of around one hour and fifteen minutes. In 2015, Gaultois voted against resettlement. Gaultois considered resettlement again in 2023 but it failed.

Before confederation with Canada in 1949, Gaultois was the customs town for those wishing to travel to the islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Prior to resettlement, the population had declined to 107 in 1956 from a peak of 252 five years earlier. After resettlement in 1966 Gaultois population rose to 594 with the fish plant and its draggers as the main employer of the town. The first Waymaster in 1877, was Richard Bradshaw.

A fishing community, Gaultois went into a decline when the Lake Group first announced the closure of its fish plant in 1981 and again in 1990 when Fishery Products International closed the plant. The Gaultois fish plant permanently closed in 2010. As of 2017, the population has plunged by 80 percent since the 1990s.

Though small, Gaultois has four distinct areas:
The Room near the wharf where, traditionally salt fish was dried for market, on flakes.
The Valley up the hill a little then surrounded by high rock faces, home to about 10 homes.
The Point across the harbour from the rooms. The most populated part of town. The point and the rooms are joined by a wooden boardwalk at the base of the rock face.
The Bottom up the hill and down the other side from the point. The most isolated part of town.

Bluefin Adventures 2025-08-03 | Join me at my campsite in Lockston Path Provincial Park where I turn a Coleman camp stove and Coleman oven into a mini‑pizzeria with a fully baked pizza—crispy crust, bubbled cheese, and all!

The Coleman Portable Camping Oven fits securely on a two‑burner Coleman propane stove . It crisps pizza wonderfully, but you’ll need to watch closely to prevent burning.

Pro tips: Place an unglazed ceramic tile or 10″ pizza stone on the bottom rack to even out heat and avoid burnt bottoms. Veterans of such ovens swear by it. I used two fire bricks measuring 4.5 inches by 9 inches. These are commonly used in wood stoves to hold the heat.

You don't know what white puddings are? Well here is some information for you. White pudding is broadly similar to black pudding, but does not include blood. Modern recipes consist of suet or fat, oatmeal, breadcrumbs and in some cases pork and pork liver, filled into a natural or cellulose sausage casing. Recipes in previous centuries included a wider range of ingredients.

This trail is considered a moderately challenging trail although the hill on the way back will challenge you more! Trail is a 2.7 km return shared nature hike to the coast. Trail is wider for motorized vehicles and possible to see wildlife on the trail and at beach. The beach is nice although best times to see more of the beach with the sand bar is during low tides. Around the beach there is a shallow cave, small waterfall and up the coast you can see the rock formation called "Bacon Strip".

There are memory benches on the trail for rest areas and to enjoy being out in nature. The name of this beach came from the pillars in front of the beach which form a naked man sitting down in the water that can be seen on your return from the sand bar. It is asked that you stay on the marked trail and pets are welcomed but must be on a leash while you pass through private land. This trail is within the Plate Cove volcanic belt and under the Discovery Geo Park. This hike was signed and opened by volunteers in 2021.

I bought this kit at my local homebrew supply store, Brewery Lane located in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland. I will make a Juicy Session IPA beer. If you follow these steps, you will be enjoying your own beer in about a month. It is a very easy and rewarding hobby. I use high quality stainless steel brew buckets and keg my beer but it is much cheaper to use basic plastic brew buckets and then bottle your beer. This is a great way to start in home brewing with terrific results.

The Best Camp Breakfast - White Puddings

Bluefin Adventures 2024-10-20 | Today I cook up some "White Puddings" on my Coleman stove. You don't know what white puddings are? Well here you go:

While recipes vary by region, most call for cereal grain (like oatmeal or barley), animal fat (like pork or beef suet), breadcrumbs, spices (like white pepper or coriander), and sometimes a protein (either pork meat or pork liver). Chefs combine these ingredients in a sausage casing before boiling and cooling the pudding in cold water. Chefs may cook the sausage whole or slice it up into coins which they then fry, grill, or deep-fry.

White pudding is a meat dish popular in Ireland, Scotland, Northumberland, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.

Four White Pudding Variations
Some of the world’s regions prepare white pudding in slightly different ways:

1. Scottish: Scottish white pudding, or mealy pudding, doesn’t usually contain pork meat and instead features a base recipe of oatmeal and lard with spices and onions or leeks. The most traditional way to serve Scottish white pudding is alongside “mince and tatties” (minced beef and potatoes) or deep-fried in a chip shop. Fruit pudding, another closely related Scottish dish, folds raisins or other dried fruits into the sausage.

2. Irish: Irish white pudding may include many additional ingredients to add flavor and texture to the dish, including potato flour, pork meat, and spices. It’s an integral part of a traditional full Irish breakfast.

3. Canadian: Canadian white pudding, popular in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, is less meaty or fatty than other white puddings, with a pared-down recipe featuring oatmeal as the main ingredient.

4. English: Certain areas in England are known for white pudding variants, namely Northumberland in the north and Somerset, Cornwall, and Devon in the south, where they prepare a highly spiced white pudding called hog’s pudding.

Port Rexton, a picturesque coastal town on the eastern shores of Newfoundland, Canada, is home to one of the area’s best-kept secrets: the Skerwink Trail. This scenic wonder is a nature lover’s paradise and a hiker’s dream.

Skerwink Trail is a 5.3-kilometre loop trail that winds its way through diverse landscapes, showcasing the rugged beauty of the Newfoundland coastline. It has become a popular destination for tourists and locals during the Summer and Fall.

Hikers can find the parking and trailhead for this hike on Rocky Hill Road in Port Rexton. There is another parking lot and trailhead in nearby Trinity East. The Skerwink Trail was ranked in the top 35 trails in North America and Europe. And for good reason. Skerwink Trail is a natural wonder that encapsulates the raw beauty of the Newfoundland coast. Its unique features, including rocky terrain, coastal vistas, and plenty of wildlife, make it a must-visit destination for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and photographers. The trail’s accessibility and stunning views will leave you with lasting memories.You may see icebergs if you hike the trail during the spring.

The trail is moderately easy to hike, it suits most hikers. However, some sections can be steep and uneven, so exercise caution, especially with children.

A hike and lunch in the woods

Bluefin Adventures 2024-02-25 | A hike and a lunch in the woods in La Manche Provincial Park. Come along as I go on a hike and cook some lunch of chilli in my Arctic Canteen Cup from Cheezhead Chris with a lid made by Carolina Chris Outdoors on my DIY Fancy Feest alcohol stove while using my Vargo Titanium folding wood stove as a wind screen. I also use my 2QZQ tree table to place my stoves on.

On the Irish Loop (Route 10) between Tors Cove and Cape Broyle is La Manche Provincial Park. First opened in August 1966, La Manche Provincial Park is a great place for hiking, whale watching, camping and swimming. The park is named after a small fishing community that was once located in a narrow cove on the ocean. La Manche got its name in the 16th/17th century by French sailors who are believed to have used the cove to hide from English ships during their raids on Ferryland and St. Johns. La Manche is French for "The Sleeve" which describes the long, narrow shape of the harbour.

I camp in two Provincial Parks - Notre Dame and then Frenchman's Cove. l enjoyed my time outdoors with some great meals and some fun kayaking, taking photos and of course a few campfires.

Notre Dame Provincial Park offers 100 campsites in a lovely forested area. They feature a picnic table, fireplace and space for your vehicle, most accommodating larger RVs. And many are nestled along the winding stream that flows through the park.

Frenchman’s Cove Provincial Park offers 75 campsites in a lovely forested area. Each campsite features a picnic table, fireplace and space for your vehicle, most accommodating larger RVs. Frenchman’s Cove Provincial Park is a real gem with 51 hectares of varying habitat that will fascinate any visitor! Its natural freshwater barachois and short hiking trail offer fantastic views and the park’s location make it a great home base as you explore the Heritage Run and the beautiful communities up and down this coast.

This video covers days 8, 9, 10 and 11 of a two week long camping trip I did in July of 2023. l enjoyed my time outdoors with some great meals and some fun beachcombing the 7 kilometres of sandy beach In this beautiful park with only 30 campsites. It is a quiet park and always a fun place to stay.

Located near the town of Burgeo approximately 150 kilometres from the Trans-Canada Highway on Route 480, Sandbanks Provincial Park is most definitely an off-the-beaten-path destination and a real gem. Named for its undulating sand dunes and five long expanses of flat, sandy beaches; some of the most magnificent on the island portion of the province. And when you’re done strolling the sandy shore, there’s a forest of spruce-fir and barrens typical of Newfoundland’s beautiful south coast.

This video covers the first four days of a two week long camping trip I did in July of 2023. I had some wet weather to deal with during this trip but I still enjoyed my time outdoors with some great meals and some fun sightseeing and kayaking. As a child I spent quite a bit of time in this park. It was a while since I was last there but I will be returning again next summer. It is a little off the beaten path but this is what makes this park so beautiful.

Kayaking Champneys West

What to do......I went kayaking around nearby Champney's West. This small town of about 75 residents has a fantastic aquarium. If you get the opportunity, you should definitely visit there.
