Powerful whirlpools have killed unlucky seafarers, but their power tends to be exaggerated by laymen. There are virtually no stories of large ships ever being sucked into a whirlpool. Tales like those by Paul the Deacon, Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe are entirely fictional.
There was a short-lived whirlpool that sucked in a portion of Lake Peigneur in New Iberia, Louisiana, United States after a drilling mishap in 1980. This was not a naturally-occurring whirlpool, but a man-made disaster caused by breaking through the roof of a salt mine. The lake then behaved like a gigantic bathtub being drained, until the mine filled and the water levels equalized

When flowing water hits against any kind of barrier, it twists away and spins around rapidly with great force. This creates a whirlpool. Whirlpools can occur in a small area where a piece of land juts out into a river, causing the water to swirl around.
They can also occur in the middle of the ocean when one current meets an opposing current, as when an incoming tide hits the ebb current of the last tide. Strong winds can also whip up the water into whirlpools.
The Maelstrom, a whirlpool off the coast of Norway, is one of the most famous, although writers such as Jules Verne, in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Edgar Allan Poe, in A Descent into the Maelstrom, have exaggerated its power. The Maelstrom is formed by the current hitting rocks and opposing tides.
In the United States, the Whirlpool Rapids of the Niagara River, between New York State and Canada, have such a violent current that they have actually carved a round basin out of the surrounding rock.

The United States is not the only nation to face these killing machines. On April 26, 1989, 1300 people died in Bangladesh thanks to the enormous Daultipur-Salturia Tornado. Antarctica has been the only continent on earth to be immune from tornadoes. Scientists have systems of detecting tornadoes, but the last minute warnings can only do so much. And since there is no way to control this disastrous act of nature, we'll just have to cross our fingers and hope we don't have a repeat of 2004.

As if 32 teeth the size of a Great White Shark's weren't scary enough, this fish has incredible eyesight in murky water and can sense low-frequency vibrations emitted by prey. It has been observed going after 60 pound catfish and literally slicing them in half.

An African lion killed a worker Wednesday at a wildlife sanctuary called Cat Haven in Dunlap, California.
Twenty-four-year-old Dianna Hanson of Seattle died after a 350-pound (160-kilogram) lion named Cous Cous escaped a smaller pen and attacked Hanson as she was cleaning its main enclosure, according to CNN. Hanson reportedly died quickly of a broken neck, and the lion inflicted other injuries after death. The Fresno County sheriff deputy shot and killed the lion in an effort to stop the attack, but it was too late, according to news reports. We asked two leading big cat experts to weigh in on the tragedy: Craig Packer, a 2012 National Geographic Waitt grantee and ecologist at the University of Minnesota; and conservation scientist Luke Dollar, grant-program director of the National Geographic Society's Big Cats Initiative.
What was your reaction to the news?
Craig Packer: The young woman was apparently attacked when the lion broke out of its holding cage and caught her while she was cleaning out its enclosure. Fully-fledged zoos are always extremely careful to keep their staff out of harm's way with heavy duty holding facilities.
Luke Dollar: I hope we don't try to vilify a law-enforcement officer who was acting on short notice in an attempt to get medical attention to the victim as quickly as possible. The danger has to be removed.
The lion is a predator and its a big, powerful animal. Whether it intended to "attack and devour" the keeper or simply "played too rough" is not clear at present. What's certain is that these animals demand a great deal of respect and constant vigilance.
Is there any bigger takeaway from this incident?
CP: Lions attract a lot of attention: Lion Country Safari, the Lion King, Born Free, Chronicles of Narnia, the Cowardly Lion, etc. They are big fluffy mammals with cute cubs and affectionate family relationships.
Most of the time they seem relaxed and cuddly—so it's easy to forget that they react to meat with the reflexive instincts of a shark. Ten years ago Roy Horne (of Siegfried and Roy) was attacked by a tiger that they had handled for years—these attacks happen when people forget about the shark inside.
Can wild animals like lions be domesticated?
LD: To take a big cat and treat it as a pet is ill advised. It really is wonderful to love and respect these creatures, but it is truly folly [to think] that one can commune and be friends with them. We have learned that lesson over and over, whether it's with bears or big cats or venomous snakes.
We have this fascination [with dangerous animals such as lions] because of their potential lethality, but for some reason we still cross the line that should never be crossed. ... Anthropomorphization is a dangerous thing. These are wild animals—this is not Simba from the Lion King.

How big can it get?
In 1944 it was reported that a green anaconda exceeding 11 metres (37 feet) had been shot at the border of Venezuela and Colombia. Like many such reports, the information was a little sketchy and was never verified -- the snake allegedly slithered away before being weighed. In 2009 though, a substantiated report told of a 5.5 metre green anaconda in Surinam, a small South American country. Whilst not as big, this is still considered a large snake.

Although the 6,500 square mile area in which the shy lesula is found is remote and sparsely populated, the researchers warn the monkey is vulnerable to extinction as a result of hunting for bush meat.

Though the pilots could have survived this test crash, scientists found that flying in first class would have been fatal. Passengers in the middle of the cabin might have suffered concussions and broken ankles, while those in the rear could have walked away. The solar powered lamps will be made from collected beach plastic, either collected by you or by us. If you collect plastic beach polluting bits, mail them to us, then that Jimmy or Bibi lamp will uniquely yours.
The lamps are intended to remind everyone that our oceans are precious and that they should not be polluted with discarded plastic.
Plastic does not biodegrade it photo degrades into smaller and smaller pieces that last forever.
Initially we will make two solar powered lamp models - Jimmy Ocean and Bibi Ocean, 35cm high -- price including delivery worldwide will be $90. As we grow our beach plastic lamp range will increase, also there will be special editions.

If you fall into the water you're basically screwed, though depending upon the strength of the whirlpool you may be able to swim to escape. The best chance of escape is by swimming in the direction of the rotation, but angled slightly outward - this ensures that the whirlpool is giving you all the possible speed it can and hopefully you can swim fast enough to get out.
If you're in a boat, however, you have much better odds. You can use the same principle, but crank the throttle. If this is unsuccessful you can drop your anchor (I know it's counter intuitive but it is proven physics that heavy objects will be thrown from the vortex simply because of how much momentum it can carry).

The whirlpool is caused by the enormous tides and bathymetry of the ocean floor in the area, and while it is one of the largest in the world with a diameter of around 250 feet, however the speed of its vortex does not come close to being one of the fastest.
The water turbulence, while rarely a danger to larger boats, can be dangerous to man powered craft and exhibits some strange water phenomena, such as standing waves, "boils," "spouts," "troughs," "dishes," and "holes."

We don't have time to review all the processes that lead to the formation of eddies, but I want to introduce you to the major features of the eddies that form as a result of the Gulf Stream. Your book has a wonderful illustration of the formation of two types of eddies, or rings, as they are now called: these are the warm core rings and the cold core rings. As the Gulf Stream flows north, it encounters the Labrador flowing south along the banks of Cape Hatteras. As these two currents meet, they begin to meander (they wind back and forth like a snake). Eventually, these meanders "pinch off" from the main flow and become independently rotating structures, known as rings.
One set of rings, which contains the cold water of the Labrador Current, are known as cold core rings. These cold core rings spin off from the Gulf Stream and are propelled eastward into the North Atlantic Ocean. Their movements may take them quite far from the Gulf Stream and, depending on their size, they may retain their characteristics for months. As they spin off from the Gulf Stream, they have a certain rotational velocity, a net direction, and a characteristic temperature structure. Because their centers contain cold nutrient-rich water, a plankton bloom develops in the middle of these rings. The development of the plankton bloom, the development of organisms that feed on the plankton, and the eventual "death" of the ring as it mixes with the surrounding water is a fascinating study in the ecological succession of plankton communities. In recent years, entire oceanographic studies have been devoted to understanding the nature of the formation and evolution of these rings, and the biological communities that develop as a result of these rings.
On the other side of the Gulf Stream, warm water pinches off into structures called warm core rings. These rings typically spin off west and north of the Gulf Stream, and travel against the flow of the Labrador Current. Because their centers are composed of warm, nutrient-poor water, conditions are not ripe for plankton blooms. As such, these rings typically don't develop the kinds of biological communities we observe in cold-core rings.
The satellite image of sea surface temperature reveals quite nicely the differences between cold-core and warm-core rings. In the image shown, reds, oranges, and yellows are warm water, and greens and blues are cold water. Take a look at the center of the picture. You should be able to make out swirling masses of water associated with the northernmost part of the Gulf Stream. Can you see two dots of green in the middle of the red and yellow water? These are cold core rings. Just above them, on the other side of the Gulf Stream, is a large swirl of yellow water floating in the middle of green water. This is a warm-core ring. Note also the meanders of the Gulf Stream as it bends towards the east. It is these meanders that give rise to these rings.

2. When you have a really powerful whirlpool, it's called a "maelstrom." (I don't mean when you personally have one; no offence intended.)

In 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the Nautilus gets sucked into a maelstrom; this doesn't happen in real life, as real naturally-occurring maelstroms, while they could pose a danger to an individual, could not actually capture and sink a ship. (Sorry, Mr. Verne!) Of course, if it is powerful enough, it can toss the ship off course, perhaps against rocks, thereby damaging or destroying it.

9. In addition to being a nickname for hot tubs (and, of course, a brand name appliance maker), a whirlpool is also the name of a spiral galaxy some 24 million light years from Earth.
10. Whirlpool is also the name given to at least 3 English-language films, from 1934, 1949 and 1959. The titles are metaphoric; none is the life story of a neglected and ignored eddy who grew up to become first a vortex for the mob and later a mafia maelstrom in his own right.

How to Swim in Rough Conditions
It's windy and raining time to postpone the triathlon? Not likely. Sooner or later, you're going to be swimming in rough water. But don't fret: An ability to manage waves can ultimately be an advantage. If you're adept at battling waves, it could be a significant upper hand against less wave-resilient opponents. And, if you ever need to breaststroke away from a shipwreck, a healthy ability to navigate stormy seas could end up being a real lifesaver.
To start, you're going to need to know how to breathe. In the open water, however, an incorrect breathing style could quickly leave you with a stomach full of salt water. That's why open water swimmers need to coordinate breathing with the conditions. If waves are coming in from your right, breathe left. If blinding sun is coming in from your left, breathe right. This might be trickier than you think, especially if you've spent years in the pool breathing to only one side. Before you tackle rough water, go to a pool and swim a few laps while breathing only on the side that you find least comfortable [source: Murphy]. In rough weather, waves, wind and spray also mean that you'll have less of a window in which to pull in air -- so be sure to make every breath count. Right before surfacing, exhale all of the air in your lungs. That way, when you come up for air, you'll be able to breathe in more quickly.
Sometimes, instead of battling the waves, it pays to swim under them. If you get hit by a particularly hard wave, you may be forced to dog paddle to recover, wasting valuable energy in the process. By ducking under those waves like a dolphin, you'll avoid getting jostled often and your rough water swims will be much less frustrating [source: Keppeler]. If a wave is relatively small, save energy by simply hopping over it. Or, if it's small enough that you can just crash through it, simply turn sideways and hit the wave with your hip or shoulder. Do it properly, and the wave will simply pass around you.
Warming up before a swim is a good idea in all weather conditions, but it's especially important in rough seas. Get in, splash around, try a test sighting anything that will give you a good idea of water temperature, visibility and current. That way, long before the starting gun goes off, you'll be able to adjust your goggles, suit and swim plan as necessary.

However, even with these visible signs gone, your cat may still be harboring feelings of anger and be flighty and afraid, so taking it slowly is important.
Slowly reach out. Let him appraise your hand before actually touching him. If he shrinks back, hisses, spits or claws out, he's not ready yet, so give him some more time.
Let him smell your fingers so that he knows it is you, his trusted companion. If he responds favorably, consider giving him a few of his favorite petting strokes, such as a stroke on the head or back.
Don't crowd him out or try hugging him close. He is still in a wary state and petting is good enough for now.
If he is still biting, scratching or growling, back off for more time. Walk away pretending he is not even there. He'll get calmer.

Domestic kittens in developed societies are usually vaccinated against common illnesses from two to three months of age. The usual combination vaccination protects against Feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR), Feline calicivirus (C), and Feline panleukopenia (P). In wartime, the distinction between warships and merchant ships is often blurred. In war, merchant ships are often armed and used as auxiliary warships, such as the Q-ships of the First World War and the armed merchant cruisers of the Second World War. Until the 17th century it was common for merchant ships to be pressed into naval service and not unusual for more than half a fleet to be composed of merchant ships. Until the threat of piracy subsided in the 19th century, it was normal practice to arm larger merchant ships such as galleons. Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. The prisons were so full of bishops, priests, and deacons, there was no room for the real criminals—murderers, thieves and robbers. After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. He died December 6, AD 343 in Myra and was buried in his cathedral church, where a unique relic, called manna, formed in his grave. This liquid substance, said to have healing powers, fostered the growth of devotion to Nicholas. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration, St. Nicholas Day, December 6th (December 19 on the Julian Calendar).

How good was Mike Tyson? From 1986-1990 he was one of the most feared heavyweight champions ever. His unique melding of fantastic hand speed and shocking punching power made him a threat to any opponent he faced. Like Joe Louis and Sonny Liston before him Tyson's baleful stare and stunning power struck terror into the hearts of his opponents.
Because he scored some crushing one-punch knockouts some observers tend to think of Tyson as strictly a limited power puncher. However, in his youthful prime, he was much more than just a devastating hitter. Hank Kaplan, speaking of the young Tyson, wrote in Boxing Digest, "He has the best defense seen in the heavyweight division in many years." Tyson had excellent fundamentals, he showed good balance, exceptional head movement, kept his hands high, ducked and bent at the waist to remain in punching position and he slipped, blocked and countered punches very well. Tony Tucker and Bonecrusher Smith each managed to land only one significant punch in their entire fights against Tyson.
Iron Mike also was a fine combination puncher in his youth, an important skill that the later versions of Tyson abandoned possibly due to a lack of good work ethics. Famous trainer Angelo Dundee said after his fight with Trevor Berbick, "Tyson throws combinations I never saw before. When have you seen a guy throw a right hand to the kidney, come up the middle with an uppercut, then throw a left hook. He throws punches . . . like a trigger."

The one legendary fighter that Tyson is most often compared to is Jack Dempsey who was one of his ring idols. Like Dempsey, Tyson was an aggressive bobbing and weaving perpetual motion machine that rushed his opponents from the opening bell. In the December 1988 Ring Magazine, Tyson and Dempsey: Is History Repeating Itself? writer John Reeves wrote about an incident in a bar while viewing the Tyson-Pinklon Thomas fight. Reeves had said to an old pug watching the fight, "A lot like Marciano huh?" "Not really" the old man replied, "I wouldn't say so. He fights more like Dempsey."

Some speculate that unknown and mysterious forces account for the unexplained disappearances, such as extraterrestrials capturing humans for study; the influence of the lost continent of Atlantis; vortices that suck objects into other dimensions; and other whimsical ideas. Some explanations are more grounded in science, if not in evidence. These include oceanic flatulence (methane gas erupting from ocean sediments) and disruptions in geomagnetic lines of flux.

How dangerous are whirlpools?
Whirlpools occur when two opposing currents meet. They cause the water to spin round and round very rapidly. Huge whirlpools at sea are normally caused by powerful tides.
The most famous whirlpool is the Maelstrom, which appears between two islands off the coast of Norway. Sometimes this whirlpool is even strong enough to destroy small ships.
The ancient Greeks believed that the Charybdis whirlpool in the Mediterranean was caused by a monster.
As we believe a black hole in the depths of uncharted space would suck us in if we venture too close, so did ancient seafaring folk believe a giant whirlpool, a spinning vortex, would suck down ships and sailors to their watery demise. When they sailed the largely unexplored seas, tales were exaggerated of maelstroms and the certain doom of impenetrable ocean depths. Even now though, small boats could be pulled down and sailors are warned to avoid these treacherous waters when the tide is running. Currents speeds increase when the tides change, so even a large boat may find steering impossible until the maelstrom subsides.
