Failed supernovae, where core collapse leads to the formation of a black hole without an external supernova, have always been one of the possible outcomes when a massive star dies. The observed properties of the dying, progenitor stars, mismatches between the star formation and supernova rates, the black hole mass
function and theoretical studies of the "explodability" of massive stars all suggest that failed supernovae represent 10-30% of core collapses, probably dominated by ~20-25 Msun progenitor stars. I will describe a search for failed supernovae with the Large Binocular Telescope and its first candidate.

Can one predict the future arrangements of planets over extremely large time periods? For centuries this issue has triggered dreams of curious people, and hot debates by specialists including Newton, Lagrange, Poincare, Kolmogorov, Laskar, and Tremaine. Villani explores the long time behavior of a plasma, evoking the advances which he made with Mouhot a few years ago, and continuing with the subject of long time stability for incompressible fluids. Common themes will appear in all these various fields, and will be the opportunity for a wide audience to appreciate both old and new results of mathematical research.

Topology is the only major branch of modern mathematics that wasn't anticipated by the ancient mathematicians. Throughout most of its history, topology has been regarded as strictly abstract mathematics, without applications. However, illustrating Wigner's principle of "the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences", topology is now beginning to come up in our understanding of many different real world phenomena.
In this minisymposium, Robert MacPherson speaks on "What is Topology?", Randall Kamien discusses topology and liquid crystals (like those in your computer display), and Raul Rabadan describes how topology modifies our understanding of the evolutionary "Tree of Life". Following the presentation, Robbert Dijkgraaf moderates a panel discussion on topology.

In this lecture, Tegmark surveys how humans have repeatedly underestimated not only the size of the cosmos, but also the power of the human mind to understand it using mathematical equations. He explores how mathematics in physics has allowed us to predict Neptune, radio waves, and the Higgs bosons. Tegmark also discusses how we should think of ourselves in a cosmic perspective.

Asteroseismology -- the study of stellar interiors via -- "starquakes" -- has been around for a century, but it is now entering a new and exciting phase. Seismic measurements from thousands of stars allow us to listen in on a cosmic symphony, and also to probe their physics, their life, and, by implication, the fate of the exoplanets that may surround them. The recent revolution in our knowledge of stars and of exoplanetary systems, thanks to the space missions CoRoT and Kepler, will be highlighted. Dr Aerts will end by discussing how ongoing and future seismic studies will reveal the structure of our Milky Way galaxy, find the ages of its stars, and, perhaps soon, aid in the search for analogs of our planet Earth around other stars.
Conny Aerts, K.U. Leuven Conny Aerts is the Director of the Institute of Astronomy, Leuven University, Belgium and the Chair of Asteroseismology, Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She received her Ph.D. from Leuven University in 1993, after bouncing around the international observatories located in the Chilean Atacama desert and the French Alps. Her curiosity about stars began in elementary school. At age 15, she knew she needed more mathematics to be an astronomer and took it upon herself to switch schools and endure 3-hour commutes to get it. Among her many honors, her contributions to asteroseismology were recognized by the King of Belgium when she received the "Belgian Nobel Prize" -- the first woman to receive this award in the "hard sciences."
