Steel Drifts, 3lb hammer and drills and the eye wood can hang on in there stubbornly well past my patience. I think the reality of how difficult the process can be is glossed over and the hazards of trying to hehandle an axe in the field without tools, clamps or a vise could lead to a nasty cut. For that reason I think the traditional slip fit or tonahawk style of handle makes far more sense and the popularity historically in remote places further backs this up. not saying its impossible only that its far more difficult with a pocket knife or multitool only and would take a long time

Dudley Cook was WRONG! Straight vs Curved Axe Handles Ben Scott 2022-02-13 | After years of woodchopping the straight vs curved handles issue has bugged me, with very strong opinions either way. A lot of interesting theory on balance, however I think in most cases the curved handles has little to no effect on changing the balance point compared to straight as the controlling hands on impact are in a similar position relative to the axis as a curved handle anyway. I think it has more to do with adding control as the curve at the end acts like a crank and stops the axe twisting.

Axe vs Chainsaw PPE Trousers and Chaps Ben Scott 2022-01-21 | A while ago I saw some comments discussing axe safety and protecting yourself from cutting yourself with an axe by accident. Someone mentioned wearing chainsaw chaps or trousers to assist in protecting. Since this pair was worn out and ready for disposal I though I would test them vs one of my axes. Long story short, they don't. Chainsaw PPE is designed to protect from chainsaws, not axes or edged tools. Always wear chainsaw PPE when working with chainsaws, it is fantastically effective against chainsaw accidents. But when using axes I would recommend woodchopping competition chain mail.

Why I Dont Like Paracord/Leather Axe Collars & Handle Breakage Ben Scott 2021-07-15 | These are the reasons why you wont see me using axe collars made of leather, paracord tape etc, especially on felling axes or racing axes. I do like steel collared splitting axes but for most uses the collar gets in the way. But the main thing is failures of the handle can be concealed by a collar meaning you may use the axe despite its unsafe condition. collars can help with abrasion but they will not stop failures such as cracking.

If this isn't the final nail in the coffin then there is nothing more I can do. They will have to learn the hard way. Axes from Companies such as Gransfors Bruks, Hults Bruk, Ochsenkopf, Helko Werk etc are not ready to be used for heavy chopping in a stock condition. The only company that produces reasonably priced axes with decently proportioned handles is council tool, but even they can benefit from a bit of thinning. For the rest you must put time in and thin them down heavily till they are comfortable, have a good amount of flexibility and fit your hand shape best.
