MOTHERING AGAINST THE WORLD For Sophie Lewis, kinship is always made, not given. Defying the many uncaring logics of our world, Lewis calls for queer denaturalization of normative family registers, comradeliness, and a new understanding of the bounds of biogenetic, procreative and reproductive love. Laying out the key arguments for 'family abolition' from her book Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family, Lewis argues for communities of care based on 'kith' and kindness, rather than the metaphor of 'family.’ Instead of waiting for a more liveable world to arrive, she asks, how can we practice comradely tenderness during the coronavirus lockdown? How can we mother and unmother ourselves collectively in the now, in the spirit of (to recall a phrase from Adrienne Rich) mothering against motherhood, which is to say, mothering against the world?

“MĀTES AIZGĀDĪBA PRET PASAULI” Sofija Luisa uzskata, ka radniecības saišu veidošana, mātišķa mīlestība un mātes gādība jebkurā gadījumā ir kaut kas cilvēka gara veidots, ne dabas ieprogrammēts. Metot izaicinājumu pasaulē dominējošajai vienaldzības loģikai, Luisa aicina uz kvīru pasaules uztverē sakņotu normatīvo ģimenes reģistru denaturalizāciju, biedriskumu un jaunu bioģenētiskas, prokreatīvas un reproduktīvas mīlestības robežu izpratni. Luisa iestājas par savstarpējas gādības vienotām kopienām, kuru pamatā liktas gara radniecības saites un sirsnība, pretstatot to “ģimenes” metaforai. Viņa vaicā – vai un kā koronavīrusa karantīnas laikā būtu iespējams veidot biedriski maigas savstarpējās attiecības, negaidot normālai dzīvei piemērotākas pasaules atnākšanu?

Chief curator Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel decided to transform the exhibition into a film set, reimagining the biennial as a feature film in anticipation of the closure of all public events in the summer of 2020.
The film and suddenly it all blossoms is a journey through the complexities of our time, shifting between hopes, desires, and doubts around our present moment. It follows a voice whose perspective on our disconcerting global situation unfolds as a meditation, guided and prompted by the exhibition’s artworks. The set itself - a Tarkovskian ecosystem of a decommissioned power station, an abandoned paintball field, warehouses, bird colonies, cruise ships and railway lines amongst empty lots and wastelands - exists as a metaphor for the ruptures of Soviet ideals and capitalist hopes. Presented as one continuous shot, the film is a reflection of standing on thresholds in a world suspended between old and new times. The drifting narrative remains tied closely to its setting, learning and growing from the Latvian and Baltic context, where ‘worlds have ended’ many times over through centuries of occupations, wars and economical upheavals, rebirths, and reinventions.
The film has been premiered in Moscow, Basel, London, Riga, Berlin, Paris, and Athens.

WILDNESS — Celebrating unpredictability against colonial and patriarchal desires for normativity and control. Merging with other systems of space and time that linger in the background of our contemporary world.
WILD THINGS: AN AESTHETICS OF BEWILDERMENT For Jack Halberstam, wild things escape control and can provide a useful political category to declassify and decolonize the patriarchal civilizational narrative that order the contemporary world. Halberstam is widely recognised for his unique ability to shuttle back and forth between high and low theory / high culture and low culture, foregrounding an unexpected and subversive understanding of popular culture, gender variance, and queer art.
JACK HALBERSTAM Jack Halberstam is Professor of Gender Studies and English at Columbia University. He is the author of six books including Wild Things: The Disorder of Desire (forthcoming, 2020), Trans*: A Quick and Quirky Account of Gender Variance (2019), Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal (2012), The Queer Art of Failure (2011), and Female Masculinity (1998), among others.

Viņš sarakstījis sešas grāmatas, tajā skaitā “Wild Things: The Disorder of Desire” (nāks klajā 2020. gadā), “Trans*: A Quick and Quirky Account of Gender Variance” (2019), “Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal” (2012), “The Queer Art of Failure” (2011) un “Female Masculinity” (1998).

FUTURES
The glossary-based series of talks and conversations began with ENDINGS and now comes to a close with possible FUTURES. Away from those thoughts of ends and abrupt ruptures, the speakers and presentations have called for a development of alternative approaches and sensibilities that urge new habits and practices of attention, invention, and experimentation against the calculative logics and rationalities of late modernity’s futures. These 20 weeks have mapped the entangled rhythms of reimagining ourselves as complex presences set within a network, and reenchanted those thought processes. How do we think about our future scenarios? How can we build more liveable futures?
20 Weeks | 20 Questions drawn from each of the contributions. Compiled by RIBOCA2 Associate Curator of Public Programmes Sofia Lemos:

FICTIONS — Narrating impossible stories, archival omissions, and voices missing from the record through the factual, the fictional, and fabulated.
FICTING AND FACTING For McKenzie Wark, radical new critical theory sprouts from the alternative worlds imagined by fiction, autofiction, fictocriticism, and writing practices that can discover forms of life outside existing accounts of gender and global capitalism. Her work exceeds academic territory, with narratives that take into account twentieth century political and media landscapes as well as class and labour struggles. It might appear that the proliferation of fictions is one of the big problems in the world today. Entire societies seem to function on the basis of deeply held delusion. And indeed we do need facts to counter such fictions, although they never seem to be very effective in changing anyone's mind. Perhaps we could look further into how both facts and fictions are produced, and even produced together. Rather than things, we could see them as practices: ficting and facting. Perhaps what we need are more interesting and reliable practices for doing both.

Vinciane Despret Phonocene’: Bird-singing in a multispecies worldRIBOCA2020-09-17 | /LV and RU below/

LANGUAGE — Moving away from the idea that language is a fact and towards communication as practice. Acknowledging nonverbal, haptic and more-than-human dialogues rather than words as given.
PHONOCENE’: BIRD-SINGING IN A MULTISPECIES WORLD For Vinciane Despret, behaviors typically identified as separating humans from animals do not actually properly belong to humans. Despret draws from the fields of anthropology, psychology and the history and philosophy of ethology, the study of animal behavior, to understand and re-imagine how humans and animals relate to one another. Many of the theories that explain bird behaviour have focused their attention on the competition between birds, on conflicts, and the need to guard and defend territorial boundaries. In her talk Despret proposes to shift our awareness to the pleasure that birds take (and give) in singing, to the boundaries of their territories as meeting places, and to the songs they learn with their neighbours. Towards imagining other stories about their shared dialects, these stories take into account all the good reasons they have for being deeply attached to, through, and by their territories and in turn, might help us to imagine what it could mean to inhabit shared territories in a multispecies world.

Introduction and Questions by Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel, RIBOCA2 Chief Curator. Subtitles available in English, Latvian and Russian.
VOICES — Moving toward different possibilities of coming to voice, by summoning those missing from history, listening to and amplifying those who have been silenced or unheard.
LOST RIGHTS AND UNATTAINED GOALS In the talk Lost Rights and Unattained Goals, Oliver Beer and Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel discuss the artist’s practice and homonymous installation that instrumentalizes a number of hollow objects from the home of Latvian poetess Aspazija (1865-1943). Building on his Vessel Orchestra at the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and Household Gods series, Beer will discuss how, using his feedback loop method, each object in his installation would have sung a note inherent to it and determined by its shape and volume. Yet, seemingly silenced by the Coronavirus pandemic, the chorus that would have given voice to Aspazija’s world developed into a new form. As extensions of her lived environment, Beer discusses how the singing objects bring about her material presence and point to the female voices lost from canons of literature, art, and music.
OLIVER BEER Oliver Beer works with sound and music, using various processes of amplification to produce sonic environments that map an otherwise imperceptible realm. He combines his background on musical composition and visual art across performance, installation, sculpture and film, to confronts us with the incompleteness of human perception and experience.

Emanuele Coccia One World, One LifeRIBOCA2020-09-03 | ...Avery F. GHOSTS — Constructing ourselves as part of a layered testimony, where history commingles with the present. Learning through forms of dispossession and the lingering social narratives they hide.
HAUNTED FUTURES: THE UTOPIAN MARGINS For Avery F. Gordon, haunting registers the harm or loss sustained by a social violence done in the past or being done in the present. Unlike trauma, this living meeting opens up possibilities rather than fatalistic views of the future. In her writings, Gordon is interested in how haunting can be cultivated towards more just and peaceful ends and how to eliminate the structural conditions that produce ghosts in the first place.
AVERY F. GORDON Avery F. Gordon is Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Visiting Professor at Birkbeck School of Law University of London. She is the author of The Hawthorn Archive: Letters from the Utopian Margins (2018), The Workhouse: The Breitenau Room (with Ines Schaber) (2015), Ghostly Matters: Haunting and the Sociological Imagination (1997), among other books and articles. She serves on the Editorial Committee of the journal Race & Class and is the co-host of No Alibis, a weekly public affairs radio program on KCSB FM Santa Barbara.

Atziņas, ko varam smelties no dažādām ekonomiskās netaisnības formām un to slēptajiem sociālajiem naratīviem.
HUMAN — Acknowledging the practices of inequity in being human through the grammars of global capital. Transforming our understanding of the world, through a complex web of human and non-human interactions.
RUNA: HUMAN BUT NOT ONLY For Marisol de la Cadena, the accelerated consumption of minerals, oil and energy as well as the development of infrastructure to make them available for consumption, has led to an unprecedented destruction of other-than-human entities. IMAGINATION — Expressing futures and fabulating from and of-the-world. Rethinking art and poetry as processes of resilience and collective acts of togetherness.
THE YOUNG, THE OLD AND THE GENERATION OF NOW For Tim Ingold, imagining the future, dissolves the boundaries between the future and past. In his writings, the imagination is intimately entangled with perception and memory such that they cannot be considered independently. Against the idea that limited futures are coming directly at us, Ingold locates the imagination as an activity, technique and subject in scenes of everyday life and as the means by which worlds come to be.
TIM INGOLD Tim Ingold is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He is the author of Anthropology: Why It Matters (2018), The Life of Lines (2015), Being Alive: Essays on Movement, Knowledge and Description (2011), Lines: A Brief History (2007), Tools, Language and Cognition in Human Evolution (with Kathleen Gibson, 1993) and The Appropriation of Nature (1986), among numerous other books and publications.

CARE Cultivating gestures of empathy, stewardship and nourishment towards natural commons in the context of finite resources.
WE ARE ALL AT SEA For Astrida Neimanis, water facilitates the gestation of all life between human and non-human as well as elemental and geophysical beings. Neimanis’ feminist writings call for a planetary ‘hydro-commons’, a shift in attention towards bodies of water and new political paradigm that extends beyond the human and beyond the present.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTARIANS: MARGINAL SPIRITUALITY AND POLITICAL DISSENT Attentive to the often confusing and sometimes contradictory links between religious / spiritual dissent and the search for political alternatives, Nikolay Smirnov and Birgit Menzel respectively research from artistic and academic perspectives the revival and proliferation of New Religious Movements in post-soviet Russia. In the dialogue Religious Libertarians: marginal spirituality and political dissent, Smirnov and Menzel explore how the occult and esoteric underground in the post-Stalinist USSR was significant for the dismantling of the Soviet project, and how, today, in the age of globalized syncretic spirituality, we continue to observe the proliferation of New Religious Movements, such as Dievturiba in Latvia and the followers of Siberian shaman Aleksandr Gabyshev in Russia.

COSMOS — Welcoming the contingency and chaos of cosmic events. Acknowledging the long history of futurity in the Baltic region and in Eastern Europe.
BORIS GROYS AND THE INSTITUTE OF THE COSMOS (Marina Simakova, Anton Vidokle and Arseny Zhilyaev) For Boris Groys the artists of the Russian avant-garde saw themselves as prophets of a New Age in the history of mankind, when humans would leave the Earth and conquer the cosmic space. Examining the Russian philosophy known as Cosmism, Groys’ writings put forth the transformative potential of art during this period. Cosmist ideas for the philosophy, literature, and art of the Soviet era have inspired The Institute of the Cosmos (Marina Simakova, Anton Vidokle and Arseny Zhilyaev) to study how the authors and artists of the Russian avant-garde envisioned a society of universal happiness.

MAGIC Being in amazement of the unfamiliar. Experiencing the world through openness, uncertainty and doubt. THE END OF THE WORLD(S) For Federico Campagna, reality varies with each era, civilization and new world, in turn shaping what is possible to do, think and imagine. In his philosophical work, Campagna investigates the operating principles of reality and proposes forms of reconstructing the world that are expressed through bewilderment and amazement. FEDERICO CAMPAGNA Federico Campagna is an philosopher and the author of Prophetic Culture: recreation for post-future adolescents (forthcoming, 2020), Technic and Magic: The Reconstruction of Reality (2018), The Last Night: anti-Work, Atheism, Adventure (2013), and What We Are Fighting For: a Radical Collective Manifesto (2012).

HEALING - Investing the everyday with meditative practices and rituals of care. Encouraging the transformation of the self through holistic approaches. Marder's talk, To heal a shipwrecked world: St. Hildegard’s cures, is prompted by a poem by St. Hildegard, the 12th-century Christian mystic and polymath, in which the author realises with pained lucidity that her world is a “shipwrecked world,” naufragus mundus. By teasing out three curative threads from Hildegard’s body of work, including a) the vegetalisation; b) the feminisation; and c) the musicalisation of existence, Marder argues that, taken together, these cures aim to regenerate our shipwrecked world, making it liveable again.

Atšķetinot no Hildegardes darba trīs dziednieciskus pavedienus ‒ eksistences a) veģetalizāciju, b) feminizāciju, c) muzikalizāciju ‒, Marders uzskata, ka visi trīs dziedējošie līdzekļi, kopā ņemti, tiecas atjaunot šo kuģa vrakam līdzīgo pasauli, atkal padarot to apdzīvojamu.

ENDINGS — How can we transform the contemporary moment, one of significant shifts in ideas, systems and ways of being, into a time of renewal and new beginnings? “The end of the world” has always haunted mankind, starting with one of the oldest myths, from the Epic of Gilgamesh in 2100 BC to films such as Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia (2011) and the current Covid-19 crisis. For CAConrad poetry and ritual are two ancient technologies that investigate the space between body and spirit. Somewhere between fable and confession, their “(Soma)tic poetry rituals” and their resulting poems are acts of attention and devotion to the present in response to trying conditions of personal and ecological violence. In the live reading and talk (Soma)tic poetry rituals, CA discusses how to make and maintain creative space in our lives. When Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge,” he was asking us to understand how bringing new ideas for the world is always more important than stagnating under templates of previous paradigms.

The second week of RIBOCA2 Public programmes was a week dedicated to a glossary word NATURE. Education team organised a seed bombing workshop with our sparkling and energised freshly formed RIBOCA Youth Council and local urban environment activists from Augnīca. Participants made healing herbs seed bombs themselves and planted them around our RIBOCA2 venue in Andrejsala disctrict. Guerilla gardening is a fun, active, fast process that brings not only joy to the participants, but also reminds us about the meaning of nature and environmental mindset in urban lifestyle. Finally, throwing bombs can be good for you and for the world!
(edited)

NATURE Understanding the human as a set of interdependencies between nature, animal, mineral, vegetal and technological ecologies.
NOTES ON NATURE (Thinking the Human in Terms of the Non-Human) For Tobias Rees, humans learn to set themselves apart from nature at the turn from the sixteenth to the seventeenth century. Interested in how categories that order knowledge mutate over time and the effects these mutations have on conceptions of the human, Rees writes about how the real is organized by modern templates for culture, society and technology.
TOBIAS REES Tobias Rees is the founding Director of the Institute’s Transformations of the Human Program of the Berggruen Institute, Professor of Humanities at the New School for Social Research and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.

In light of our current situation, the 2nd edition of Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA2), and suddenly it all blossoms, had to be reimagined. Initially planned to open on 16 May 2020 with a five-month duration, the project will now transform into a feature movie and the unfinished exhibition will become its film set. What was initially envisioned as a weekly public programme of several activities from evening talks with international speakers, and different educational activities throughout the week, has combined and condensed into an online series of talks and conversations that will introduce the reformatted exhibition. The series of talks and conversations will begin 21 May 2020.
The series of talks and conversations bring together outstanding thinkers, researchers, and writers from various fields, join Agniya Mirgorodskaya, Founding Director of Riga Biennial Foundation, Commissioner of Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Rebecca Lamarche Vadel, RIBOCA2 Chief Curator and Sofia Lemos, Associate Curator of RIBOCA2 Public Programmes in introducing this programme.
Unfolding across the duration of the Biennial, the weekly programme of online talks and conversations, workshops and activities expands on a glossary of words that inspired RIBOCA2: Endings, Nature, Love, Ruins, Healing, Magic, Cosmos, Underground, Care, Dreams, Dance, Imagination, Human, Wildness, Ghosts, Metamorphosis, Voices, Fictions and Futures. Each keyword works as a prompt for the week’s events and as a tool for building alternative social and ecological imaginaries that acknowledge diverse ways of being, thinking and doing.

Mikropilsonis / Microcitizen / microRIBOCARIBOCA2020-05-13 | LV un RU below/ Lots of things may come and go, many of them unnoticed. And yet the project mikropilsonis (microcitizen) continues to encourage local residents of Riga to have unexperienced reflections on themselves, their neighbours and neighbourhood from different perspectives. For instance, so many recognisable characters can be found easily, entangled naturally in the urban jungle of Riga and our everyday lives, not forgetting the architectural odds, peculiarities and singularities of a particular district.
LV🕵🏻♂️ Rīgas centra apkaimēs publiskās mākslas projekts mikropilsonis sniedz iespēju sastapties ar rīdzinieku portretējumiem, palūkoties uz sevi, saviem kaimiņiem un savu rajonu no neierastāka redzes punkta. Ar labsirdīgu humoru tie atspoguļo mūsu apkaimes iedzīvotāju sociālo tipoloģiju un vietējās sadzīves ieradumus, vienlaikus izceļot arī konkrētā rajona arhitektoniskās īpatnības. Šis ir tikai ieskats.

With Jacob's guidance, participants created unusual musical instruments out of all sorts of objects and materials. ----- Since 2011, Jacob Cohen has performed at New York Subway stations, producing original cello music every day for a live and ever-changing audience. With his street performances, Cohen has traveled to Southeast Asia, Japan, Thailand and India, and in 2014, he created the Cello Without Walls project, where he performed and led master classes in Northeast US prisons. A year later, the musician received a grant to create a youth music program for the world's largest prison complex, the Raiker Island. Cohen has repeatedly collaborated with Polish sculptor Pawel Althamer, and both artists will be hosting an interactive installation at #BRIBOCA2 this year.

What if you had the opportunity to have a meaningful exchange with a stranger and spark a new relationship, new ideas, and new outlooks on life? Would you take it? ‘Feast of Strangers’ is an event based on an original idea by Oxford scholar Theodore Zeldin. The events pair two strangers together for sincere, rewarding exchanges that probe beyond small talk. You are each given a ‘Menu of Conversation’ but instead of descriptions of food dishes, each heading contains topics to talk about.
The event was organized by the Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA) and Oxford Muse Foundation within the support of Dailes Theatre on 7 October 2019. We want to thank each and everyone who inspired and encouraged others to participate, who was keen on learning, trusted, listened, and above all who was open to new findings and brave enough to take a chance on having a conversation with a stranger.

#RIBOCA #RigaBiennial #ArtEducationShe Who Has No Crown by Alexis Blake / Live broadcast / RIBOCA1RIBOCA2018-10-28 | Commissioned by the 1st Riga Biennial, 'she who has no crown' is a work in two parts: an LP record and a live broadcast performance heard in a Riga public space - outside the former Faculty of Biology of the University of Latvia on 28th October 2018
she who has no crown seeks to fill the public and private space with the sound of alternative narratives by sonically exploring questions of (in)visibility and censorship in relation to gender, self-expression, sexuality and national narratives.
#RIBOCA #RigaBiennial #AlexisBlakeRIBOCA1 VenuesRIBOCA2018-10-01 | The Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA) has eight main venues, which host the inaugural edition of the biennial and its related public programme and events.
The selected venues reflect Riga’s diverse cultural and architectural history: from medieval and 19th century traditional wooden buildings and pre-war Art Nouveau; to Soviet modernism and impressive industrial architecture. The spaces not only serve as an aesthetically captivating frame for the concept of the biennial and its artworks but are also an integral part of the broader cultural and historical narrative of the city of Riga and the wider Baltic region.
#RIBOCA #RigaBiennialPalace Ruin by James Beckett / RIBOCA1RIBOCA2018-10-01 | Palace Ruin is a reconstruction of the former Paleis voor Volksvlijt (Palace of Popular Diligence), The Netherlands’ own Crystal Palace, which went up in flames in 1929. An archival photo shows a flank of the remaining building amid a haze of smoke and debris the morning after attempts to douse the fire. Beckett recreates this moment in the form of a large sculpture, a smoldering wreck – part horror house, part memorial. Palace Ruin features a public programme of events (concerts, screenings, talks) during the biennial.
#RIBOCA #RigaBiennial #JamesBeckettRIBOCA1 at Former Faculty of Biology of the University of LatviaRIBOCA2018-10-01 | The faculty serve as one of the main venues of RIBOCA and it also hosts the public and educational programme. The Neo-Renaissance style venue still houses former laboratory spaces, empty wood-paneled libraries, two auditoriums and three functioning museums (of zoology, the history of chemistry and botany). These spaces all invoke the building’s former use as the Faculty of Chemistry, and subsequently the Faculty of Biology, of the University of Latvia. Taking into consideration the building’s function as a former scientific and educational institution, the first chapter of the exhibition explores scientific and technological developments, how they fundamentally change the world – visible and invisible – around us, and what effects they have on the way we view and understand it. The works take into account the notion of evolutionary time, man’s impact on the environment in the age of the Anthropocene, and the constant renewal of knowledge. They also question the nature, limits and extent of progress – its possibilities and shortcomings, opportunities, pitfalls and consequences. We seem to be on the cusp of a brave new world; one that could go either way – good or ill – depending on human action. Is technological and scientific progress leading is toward an abyss, “like an axe in the hands of a criminal”, as Albert Einstein once said? Or will it lead us towards something liberating and full of promise?
#RIBOCA #RigaBiennialRIBOCA1 at Art center ZuzeumRIBOCA2018-10-01 | The neurotic and fast-moving pace of contemporary life has created common feelings of anxiety, of failing to live up to the image we have created for ourselves, and fear of being left behind. For many people, regardless of age, the speed of change today is faster than the human psyche seems able to handle. It is becoming increasingly challenging to reconcile the rhythms of our personal lives with the demands placed on us by work and ‘performance’ in all fields. Though the advent of technology provides great opportunities, it has also created a collective sense of malaise, which is also fuelled by information overload, social-media overdrive and the constant feeling that there is not enough time. The works at Art center Zuzeum look at how these changes affect the individual on a more personal, existential level, and at what strategies of resistance or alternative ways of being are possible. Considering the zeitgeist, it might be worth pausing to think about Ludwig Wittgenstein’s comment that, “A man will be imprisoned in a room with a door that's unlocked and opens inwards; as long as it does not occur to him to pull rather than push.”
