🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
The inland wetland of Mýrar in West Iceland is an ancient freshwater ecosystem of international importance. Its expansive freshwater habitats are resting places for migratory birds, some of whose global populations rely on them as breeding grounds. Within its many lakes and streams, species like the critically endangered eel feed and grow during epic migrations. In two key catchments of the Mýrar wetlands, we’re supporting the first wetland restoration project of its kind in Iceland for freshwater species. The goals? To unblock migratory paths, rewet drained peatlands and restore flows that connect all the way out to sea.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Coral reefs are known as “the rainforests of the sea”. These vibrantly complex ecosystems harbour the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem globally. An estimated 25% of all marine species depend on reefs. They are also crucial for millions of people, providing food, livelihoods, resources and coastal protection.
Major threats, such as over-exploitation and climate change, are jeopardising the future of coral reefs. In the last few decades, sharp declines in reef cover have occurred worldwide. This is our first coral reef project to restore damaged reefs in the northern waters of Nusa Penida, Indonesia.
Our long-term goal is to improve resilience by enhancing connectivity of fragmented reefs whilst protecting and preserving endangered coral species. Led by our local team of expert divers and marine biologists passionate about the preservation of this marine ecosystem, we work with local people to promote positive community involvement in coral reef restoration.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Four species of snail thought to be extinct have been found on a small Atlantic island. After more than 100 years without a confirmed observation, the species were rediscovered on Deserta Grande by the local conservationists at IFCN. Their only home and habitat had been devastated by invasive species so their reappearance comes as a very pleasant surprise. However, initial estimates of their numbers (less than 50) suggest they may be on the verge of extinction. For this project, we have joined a hopeful rescue operation led by the IFCN that aims to ensure the long term survival of these species.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Healthy wetland habitats are one of the most vibrant ecosystems for biodiversity in Europe. Flora and fauna can flourish when free flowing water meanders through the land creating wetland conditions along its path. The Čiliz Brook is a stream in southwest Slovakia trying to do this, but comes up against several problems as it winds through an agricultural maze. The stream has been altered, polluted and blocked. With our partners and specialists in wetland restoration, BROZ, we plan to unclog this ‘artery’ and supply much needed water to dry lands. This will flood a small forest and a field to create amphibian ponds and transform an area into a rare wetland habitat - wet sedge meadows.

Back in August 2023 we purchased 194ha of land next to the Yasuni National Park in Ecuador, comprised of a mix of habitats from untouched rainforest to abandoned cattle pastures. Since then we have purchased an additional 15ha attached to our land, taking the total up to 209ha, and we've been working towards numerous ways to improve the habitat quality and monitor its health on our land and beyond ever since.
This video covers our efforts to set up ambient biodiversity monitoring systems using camera traps and bioacoustics, as well as our plan to test and develop canopy bridges to combat the effects of habitat fragmentation for arboreal animals

Paul de Toirões is an important area for landscape connectivity in northwest Portugal where nature is recovering from years of mining. The 300-hectare property boasts one of the largest water surface areas in the Greater Côa Valley, consisting of lagoons, canals, and ponds. Its diverse range of environments are connected by seasonal flooding which supports a variety of wildlife and vegetation. In an area managed by our partners, Rewilding Portugal, this project presents an excellent opportunity to expand its habitats and establish a stronghold for wilderness in the region. Starting with our first intervention, we aim to enlarge and diversify the habitats through earthworks.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Over recent decades, large swathes of Slovakia’s wetlands have been lost. They have been drained to make way for agriculture as a result of the construction of dams for hydroelectric power, as well as for timber production. Wetlands are an integral part of the Danube floodplain landscape in Slovakia and draining them to plant trees has detrimental impacts on the environment. Wetlands store large amounts of carbon and are home to a diversity of plant and animal species that are specially adapted to the wet conditions. One of these species is the nationally endangered and endemic Pannonian root vole, which has declined drastically in Slovakia in response to disappearing wetlands. This project will turn forest back into a wetland by digging 650 meters of ditches. This will kickstart a “flood” of change and bring back a healthy functioning, sustainable and wilder ecosystem.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Butterflies are one of nature’s most eye-catching creations and best embodiments of beauty. They also act as important health indicators of their environment. Many butterfly species are specialists, meaning they require very specific food and habitat conditions to complete their life cycles. Consequently, this makes butterflies highly susceptible to environmental changes. Across much of Europe, both overgrazing and undergrazing as well as changes in forestry practices are affecting butterfly habitats and driving populations down. This project seeks to rewild a butterfly meadow in an area of Slovakia called Beckovske Skalice (near Beckov castle). We are working with BROZ to improve the conditions for butterfly and moth host plants through conservation grazing and clearing shrubs and woody vegetation from overgrown meadows.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
We are embarking on a new journey. To help protect the most biodiverse place on Earth.
Our new project, led by our own team of biologists, will aim to protect and restore rainforest in the buffer zone of the Yasuní National Park. Located in the Amazon region of Ecuador, this rainforest is home to the highest concentration of species on the planet.
We have laid the cornerstone by purchasing 140 hectares of forest (protecting 200 ha) that borders the national park, securing its protection and establishing a base for our project. Together with members of the local community and local experts, we will develop solutions to stop forest degradation and kick-start forest regeneration in the area.

We have laid the cornerstone by purchasing 140 hectares of forest that borders the national park, securing its protection and establishing a base for our project. Together with members of the local community and local experts, we aim to develop solutions to stop forest degradation and kick-start forest regeneration in the area.

Yet still, within its 5.5 million square kilometres, one region stands out above all. A belt of rainforest in the eastern Amazon that runs from the lowlands of Ecuador to Manaus in Peru. Here, the highest levels of biodiversity for mammals, birds, amphibians and vascular plants overlap to form a planetary megadiversity hotspot.
Nestled within this belt lies one protected area, the Yasuní National Park, which is often anecdotally referred to as the most biologically diverse place on the planet.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
The River Chew is a scenic watercourse that forms part of the Bristol Avon network of rivers, streams and lakes in the British countryside. Along stretches of the river, trees and vegetation provide food, shelter and spawning grounds for important migratory fish and invertebrates, including the protected Atlantic salmon. Where there is sufficient shade, trees help improve water temperatures, sediment levels and the riverbank. However, sections of the River Chew don’t have this delicate balance of vegetation cover and have been degraded by surrounding land use. Partnering with BART (Bristol Avon River Trust), we are focusing on river habitat restoration, riparian tree management, landowner engagement and habitat and fish spawning surveys to improve two key fish spawning tributaries.

===============================
Back in August 2023 we purchased a section of rainforest in Ecuador along the border of the Yasuni National Park, and the team has been busy with lots of logistics and on-the-ground work since! Our area protects around 200 hectares (including the buffer zones around the river) and consists of land with various levels of exploitation, from clear-cut fields to almost virgin rainforests.
We're yet to fully introduce this project, but more will be coming out soon so keep an eye out for that. We can't wait to share more with you!

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
This project is turning forest back into a wetland with its 650 meters of ditches. This will kickstart an annual “flood” of change and bring back a healthy functioning, sustainable and wilder ecosystem.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Scotland possesses some of the richest examples in Europe of a rare biome - temperate rainforest. Despite this, there are only thought to be around 30,000 hectares of woodland that have rainforest biodiversity left within the rainforest zone, an area that stretches along the west coast and is characterised by its wet climate. The zone currently holds approximately 93,000 hectares of semi-natural woodland that could potentially harbour this diversity. Ancient or old growth woodlands are the best places to start protecting, expanding and managing this declining habitat.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
On a stunning 15 km stretch of Portuguese coast two special cliff plants found nowhere else on earth are facing extinction. The main threat comes from a dominating invasive species carpeting the cliff called the ‘ice plant’. Access to the sheer cliff faces poses a challenge for their conservation. This is why we’ve gathered local rock climbers and cavers, passionate about local biodiversity, to remove the invasive ice plant. We’re also using drone technology to document changes to the vegetation. Protecting these precious plants not only reduces biodiversity loss but treasures nature in all its glorious forms.

Native oysters (Ostrea edulis) are considered functionally extinct in many parts of Europe. Native oyster beds were once widespread in the UK and known as ‘the poor man’s food’, but have declined by 95% in the United Kingdom since the mid-19th century. This habitat-forming species would have once been present throughout our coastlines alongside other habitats such as seagrass beds, but now they are either absent or in relatively small, fragmented populations. There are no known remaining wild native oyster populations within the Cromarty Firth, but they were present in the area in the recent past. This community-led marine enhancement project, in partnership with Moray Ocean Community, aims to reintroduce native oysters to the Cromarty firth and generate open access data on the coastal and marine habitats found in the wider area.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Montane woodland is a virtually extinct habitat in Scotland. Of the 5.1% of native forests in the Scottish Highlands, only a mere 4% exists above altitudes of 400 metres. Although important restoration schemes are working to restore Caledonian pine forest, temperate rainforests and montane willow scrub, a missing piece of the landscape is largely, if not completely neglected - mountain birch woodland. In what should be a transitional zone between lower and higher mountain woodlands, high-altitude adapted species like mountain birch have all but disappeared, leaving a gap in this ecological niche. This Mountain Birch Project (MBP), led by Reforesting Scotland, aims to progress efforts to reinstate mountain birch woodland in Scotland. It will involve locating remaining fragments, mapping their distribution and seed collection and propagation, as well as the establishment of a seed orchard.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
The project featured in this video is all about translocating ground squirrels between populations, to help facilitate gene flow and counteract the loss of genetic diversity caused by the fragmentation of their habitat. Our project is informed by the results of a genetic screening study and expert guidance, and is based on the Action Plan for the Conservation of the European Ground Squirrel in the European Union. It builds upon a previous project, where we supported some ground squirrel colonies in Slovakia with supplementary feeding while reducing predation pressure by putting up nesting boxes.
This project is also the first known ground squirrel translocation project of this scale to include baseline data and follow up genetic screening studies. Mossy Earth members have supported the funding of 13,700 Euros each year to cover the staff and travel costs for this project until 2027.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Beavers have rightly claimed a lot of accolades in the recent rewilding movement for their central role in restoring riparian areas. The dams they engineer create habitats, filter water and help mitigate flood damage and droughts. For degraded riparian areas devoid of trees and beavers, artificial structures called Beaver Dam Analogues (BDAs) are being used to mimic the effects of beaver dams. This is the case for our latest project in Scotland at Glassie Farm, a member of the Northwoods Rewilding Network (NRN). Habitat degradation, pollution and rising water temperatures are threatening a host of important native species. In partnership with River Revivers, we’re building BDAs and planting native trees and scrub to create habitat, help improve water quality, stabilise water temperature and mitigate flood damage.

===============================
Underwater forests are an immensely important ecosystem: they support biodiversity, improve water quality and sequester carbon. Despite their significance for marine life and the fight against climate change, the loss of kelp forests from coastlines worldwide has captured much less of the spotlight on deforestation. This is why since 2020, we have been working with SeaForester to restore kelp forests in Portugal where large areas of kelp have disappeared. We are building a kelp nursery to produce and deploy kelp that tests a new method called ‘green gravel’ with the potential for large-scale marine reforestation.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Woodland restoration is happening at astonishing rates in Scotland to protect native species of conservation concern like the red squirrel, pine marten and capercaillie. However, one area that is being largely ignored, is the understory. A healthy woodland in Scotland is carpeted in shrubs, wildflowers, mosses and fungi. While we have given woodlands a helping hand by bringing native trees back to the landscape, some understory species are slow or entirely unable to recolonize. This 4-year-long project aims to restore a rich, resilient woodland habitat with a healthy understory at 3 different sites in Scotland.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
For millions of years, water has run over the limestone and dolomite bedrocks of Croatia carving out a special subterranean world. In this mysterious underground terrain, uniquely adapted species have evolved in the dark, damp environments in what’s known as karst caves. Although we are no longer cave-dwelling species ourselves, our impact on these fragile ecosystems is still being felt. For decades, caves in Croatia have been used as dumping grounds for waste, which is threatening endemic cave species and polluting important sources of water. Supporting our partners BIOTA, we are attempting to undo some of the footprint by sending a team of technical divers into the Predolac cave to remove waste.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
This was the first project we undertook at Mossy Earth and it was a challenging one. Our ultimate goal was to create a long term native forest that will propagate from the top of the valley to other areas. We faced an uphill battle with the heat and the lack of soil which lead to high mortality rates. Nevertheless, many of the trees survived and we believe that in the long we will succeed in our aim of creating a pocket from which woodland will propagate further. We’ve visited the area several times over the years of course and have kept a keen eye on the progress. Potential future interventions might include cutting down the Portuguese broom to reduce the fuel availability and shade and also adding some more trees to boost the overall numbers.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Iceland is known for its vast open landscapes shaped by massive volcanos and expansive glaciers. Native birchwoods, the only woodland type to form in Iceland, are also an important part of the landscape. They offer food and shelter for biodiversity, help stabilise soil, provide wind breaks, and sequester carbon. At one point, it is thought that 25-40% of Iceland was covered in birchwoods. Now, it is a mere 1.5%. This project, in partnership with the Iceland Forest Service, aims to restore birchwoods to an area about 120km east of Reykjavik where natural succession could take centuries or even millennia.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT

===============================

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
We are looking to create 33 hectares of a rare ecosystem: wet sedge meadows. While at the same time we want to help restore the flow of the Ciliz brook which is currently stuck between all the human infrastructure and help flood a small forest to create a valuable amphibian pond. This project has a bit of everything and we think it is great bang for our buck in terms of impact.
We will publish the project details and the project management plan on our website in the coming weeks as we finalise the details.
