RobynOAre you wondering why your animation looks bad? Does your animation suffer from floaty movements, or is it just unconvincing or lacking something but you don't know what? If so, this is probably the video for you.
I'll detail some of the most common animation problems and mistakes. Learn how to fix your floaty movements, and also find out why it looks that way. Learn about the things you should stop doing if you want to become a good animator. Things like visual white noise and the lack of anticipation, action and reaction. Learn about planning and blocking your animation, and using pose to pose versus straight ahead action when animating a scene. Learn about why the graph editor only wants what's best for you - as do I.
There are more things to learn, but I'll leave it up to you to keep watching so you can learn how to fix your animation.

Timing and spacing are probably the two most important animation concepts to grasp, annd timing is one of the 12 principles of animation for a reason. It can be difficult to understand the difference between the two when you're first starting out or trying to learn animation or even if you've been in it for a while. Or maybe you can execute it pretty well but if someone asked you, you wouldn't be able to explain the difference between the two concepts. While timing and spacing go hand in hand, they are actually different concepts- it's not different terminology used for the same concept, which some people seem to think because I've heard the terms used interchangably which is not accurate. Understanding timing and spacing and how to use and manipulate the two will improve your animations and motion graphics tenfold!

Netflix recently fired it's Director of Creative Leadership and Development for Original Animation and is cancelling a bunch of animated shows like Bone, City of Ghosts and Toil and Trouble, with new shows being cancelled even more recently. It's been a rough month or so for animation, and I'm kind of hating this perception people have of it as a "lower" or less worthy medium than the rest of cinema, completely ignoring the skill and artistry that goes into animation production, and seeing it as the first thing to drop or cut budget on when a company has financial problems like Netflix as they recently lost a huge amount of subscribers.
I'd love to know what other people think about this whole issue with Netflix animation and netflix cancelling animated shows, if this is the start of Netflix's downfall, what happened at The Oscars, and people's perception of animation in general. Do you think people will soon stop thinking animation is just for kids, or will this opinion always be common?

I watched it for myself, with my most critical glasses on, and decided to make this video review and animation analysis because I couldn't leave some things unsaid. Of course, I had to give my two cents on the visual treatment and animation since that's my profession, as well as the storyline and characters because...I just felt like it. The character designs, anime influences and 2d elements in Turning Red make it really unique and refreshingly different from other Pixar and Disney 3d films. When to Animate with Pose to Pose vs Straight Ahead Action | Animation AdviceRobynO2022-03-10 | Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose are two different methods of animating and are one of the 12 principles of animation as mentioned in The Animator's Survival Kit. Michiru Rig - thestoff.gumroad.com/l/pSXRnWhy Networking is Important for Animators #shortsRobynO2022-03-02 | Networking is a contentious subject for a lot of people in the animation industry. A lot of people hate it and claim they'll never do it and it's not necessary and your work should just speak for itself, while others do think it's really important for advancing your animation career and finding animation jobs. I've done a video on it before, but here's the #short version of one of the reasons it's so important, especially if you're new to the animation industry

This is advice from Milt Kahl, passed on to Richard Williams, who wrote the Animators Survival kit. Milt Kahl is considered a god among animators and many new animators would take any advice he gave to become a better animator. Here I discuss why it's controversial and how there are even studies that give evidence of the positive effects of music on divergent thinking and the effects of music on improving cognitive performance. So this actually may not be the best piece of advice for animators, or any creatives for that matter.
Understandably, beginner animators want to do everything by the book and take all the advice form the greats but it may not always be for the best. Ultimately, everybody is different and in this case, and my advice is that people should just do what works for them.
