Tom Smothers full interview Terry Phillips 2025-02-08 | Terry Phillips, host of the "Quality of Life" public radio program, interviewed Tom Smothers on March 9, 2010. The topic was free speech in the workplace. Tom and his brother, Dick, had a top-rated TV variety show ("The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour") on CBS from 1967 to 1969. The network fired them following a dispute over creative control and the presentation of controversial material. The Smothers brothers won a federal law suit against CBS which was reportedly ordered to pay them $776,300.Ironically, Phillips was fired in a similar dispute with the station which had broadcast this radio program. That matter was settled out of court after the company agreed to pay him an undisclosed sum for contract violation.Tom Smothers passed away on Dec. 26, 2023.
