Most of this video is in mandarin Chinese only.I'm sorry for updating sparsly lately, but since a couple of weeks back I do unfortunately not have wifi at home. I am instead relying on free public wifi, whenever I can get my hands on that. And it's usually suuuper slow. // SITTING THE MONTH!? //Sitting the month is a Chinese postpartum tradition. When a woman has just given birth, she is then supposed to rest for a month. How this month of rest plays out varies between families and regions, but in this video Yating explains how she's doing it - when the video was filmed she had been sitting the month for three weeks.Some basics that you'll find everywhere in China is that you're not supposed to leave the house (come call it postpartum confinement...), that you need to rest, that you shouls avoid anything cold, and always keep warm.There are also usually postpartum diets, in Yating's case that consisted of a lot of soup, and eating non-spicy and milder flavours only. The postpartum care, is often done by the husband and his parents, but in Yating's case her own parents were there caring for her. They were there to cook, clean and just help out for the whole month. As you will see, Yating's way of sitting the month seems quite healthy and nice - but there are some horror stories out there. Last year there was new about a young woman who died while sitting the month. She had been forced to stay wrapped up in her bed without any air conditioner during summer. And eventually her inner organs couldn't take it and she passed away. I have also heard about mothers who have been forced to rest, also from caring for their own baby - and hence were barely allowed to touch their baby during the whole first month. The Last Pottery Master... | Yunnan Vlog 01 Miriam Follin 北欧米粒 2023-05-27 | During our travels earlier this year, we got in contact with a local pottery maker, who in turn lead to visiting a local pottery master in a small village outside of Dali. The village used to be a base for potters, that all used the local clay found in the surrounding mountains. Invited to a Muslim Home for the Holidays! Miriam Follin 北欧米粒 2023-04-29 | Here comes a vlog from our first experience celebrating Eid in the neighbouring village. My husband and I don't have much experience from Hui culture or Muslim culture, so when a friend invited us we were happy to go, and she was happy to introduce a little bit of her culture and her tradition. I do not have a lot of knowledge of Islam, and if I have done mistakes in the translation, I do apologise. When writing the subtitles, I was asking my friend for a lot of advice, and I have also done a lot of googling to try to make the best translation - but there might still be mistakes. Translating between languages is hard in itself, and when there are more languages involved that neither party speaks (Arabic) it is even more difficult. Last summers potatoes... 7. Snow: a Christmas Memory Miriam Follin 北欧米粒 2022-12-07 | December 7: snow ❄️In todays very rushed society, I think snow can be quite an inconvenience. Getting dressed and making your way out to the car, getting the car ready to leave...I remember always coming much later than usual to drop off at kindergarten during winter. I could not get used to it.All the extra time it takes, easily adds a layer of stress - because dispite the change in season and weather, things go on as usual.We work the normal eight hours a day, five days a week. Need to pick up kids, drop of kids, need to do activities, work out, meet friends, meet family participate in this, or that... While there are huge changes in the natural world - our lives look more or less the same all year round, just a bit more inconvenient, due to a layer of snow.I feel like the past few years, I have gotten a deeper appreciation going with the flow of life. Slowing down when there are obsticles, rather than pushing through. I think it's a good thing to realise this - that it's OK to be resting. It's OK to slow down. It's OK to do less. To engage less. To do the bare minimum. It's winter. Let the snow muffle out the pressure until you can't hear it anymore. ❄️#christmasmemories #christmasstress #itsoktoslowdown #winter

5. Oranges & Cloves: a Christmas Memory Miriam Follin 北欧米粒 2022-12-05 | December 5 🍊The smells and flavours of Christmas and winter. Oranges, cinnamon, coco powder, cloves, ginger, saffron. None of which are native or possible to find in Sweden. I find it quite amusing that now, here in rural China, what I wish for are non-Swedish flavours in order to bring back memories from... Sweden! I suppose the reason we ate there special treats, is that they were exclusive and expenaive/hard to get your hands on, and hence reserved for a very special occasion only (Christmas). Would love to look into more of the history of the Swedish smells and flavours of Christmas, but I'm saving that for the future. This year I'm going to try to find it all on taobao. 4. The First Christmas Decorations of 2020 Miriam Follin 北欧米粒 2022-12-04 | December 4 🍊2020, the first year I prepared Christmas in China properly. One of the first thins we made, was dried citrus fruits for decorations. I don't even know if it was December yet. Now it's December 4, and I har done very little. I brought out one set of Christmas lights, but unfortunately the kids played with it yesterday until it broke and now only half of the lights work. But we're having a really cozy December anyway, much thanks to the Swedish TV calendar. Every evening before we go to bed, we turn the broken lights on, put on or knitted socks, cuddle under a blanket and watch the calendar. And if feel it's enough. However, this evening we got some news, apparently we're not in lock-down anymore?! I honestly won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes, but there are fireworks everywhere and people are celebrating. We've been in lock-down since August. 3. Our Swedish Cottage Garden in Winter: Christmas Memories Miriam Follin 北欧米粒 2022-12-04 | December 3 ❄️We spent a year and a half in the cottage in Sweden. We came in winter and then stayed one more. It's not particularly long period of time, but I felt we made it our home, and I have such lovely memories from there. I particularly loved our bird feeder, just by the window next to out dining table. And the birds that stopped by. Sometimes when I see the bare mountains here, am greeted by the harsh winds and the sand, I miss this little cottage in the forest and all the life there. 2. Advent Calendars From Sweden: a Christmas Memory Miriam Follin 北欧米粒 2022-12-02 | When it’s December, I always feel very excited waking up. Pirr i magen, butterflies. I think the reason is the advent calendars. Every December morning, for as far as I can remember, I woke up and rushed over to the calendars. I had one glittery one, that my cousin used to give me, one chocolate calendar, one from our church, sometimes other gifted ones, and of course the gift calendar. My grandmother made it for me, and every December there would be 24 little gifts. Chocolates, candies, colorful pens, rubber gums, and just tiny little gifts that my mum had prepared. I don’t know if this is a tradition around the world for Christmas celebrations. Did you have this as a child? Advent calendars? Counting down the days for Christmas. 1. We cut our first ever Christmas tree: a Christmas Memory Miriam Follin 北欧米粒 2022-12-01 | Christmas content coming! If you have followed me for a while, you know I love Christmas. 2020 was when we spend the holidays in China last – and also the first time we went all in (in the ways possible for us at the time). I posted many videos from that year, and have always wanted to do the same since. Last year I posted only one Christmas video, and the reason was that I was alone in Sweden with the kids until December 11, when Yonghong FINALLY came back – and we simply enjoyed our time together. This year, I had hoped to do something similar - but fact is that we are in strict lock-down in our village now, and have been since mid-October. This means we can’t order anything online or go to any supermarket, so I can’t do any Christmas cooking (the shops in the village don’t have cream, butter, coco powder, chocolate, oranges, lemons or anything like that). Being in lock-down has generally been a bit frustrating (more on that in a coming video), and I must admit I’m not in the best of moods. But two days ago I thought “Oh, never mind the lock-down, I’ll make films anyways”. So here we go: I will post a short vertical video every day until Christmas, starting today.
