Ok, but do I REALLY need to use an eye cream? 🤔
Unfortunately, the eye area is one of the first parts of the face where we show signs of ageing. The skin around our eyes is extremely thin and delicate, and is therefore vulnerable to sun damage, pollution and other environmental factors. The skin around our eyes is naturally prone to dryness, wrinkles and a loss of volume because it does not produce as much natural oil (or sebum) as the rest of the face. Having fewer sebaceous glands in this area can result in dryness, crepey eyes and wrinkles.
Depending on the strength of product, eye creams and serums can be used at any (adult) age. We recommend starting to use an eye cream at the first signs of ageing to achieve maximum, noticeable benefits from use and more improvement over time.

Skin Fit September is about getting your skin in shape for the warmer months ahead, when we’re (hopefully!) out of lockdown and enjoying time with the ones we love.
At the beginning of September we want everyone to identify a skin goal that will help them feel confident in their skin. Each week we will focus on different parts of your regime to work towards that goal, so it is achievable (and fun!)
Some examples include:
Get your glow back
Address your dehydration
Sort out congestion
Minimise those fines lines and signs of ageing
Get into the habit of protecting your skin with SPF
Learn how to exfoliate properly
Get a fresh, daily routine that is simple but effective
Learn more about ethical, clean skincare
Why is it important?
During a time when there is so much stress and negativity in our lives, we’d like to bring our skincare lovers together to all work towards a common goal. We hope to cultivate a sense of community in the online beauty space, inspire each other, have people post their progress, learnings and successes in a time where everyone needs a bit of a distraction and motivation.
We hope that while we may be separated from the people we love, we can connect to each other through a shared interest in all things skincare and wellness.

Full disclosure: Here at The Clinic we are definitely on #TeamEyeCream. As a team of registered nurses and skincare specialists, we see the premature ageing that occurs around the delicate eye area on a daily basis. It’s a personal choice, but we highly recommend using a product that is both preventative and restorative in reducing wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness around the eyes. 👁️
The eyes are often the first area to show signs of ageing due to a lack of sebaceous glands. Eye creams and serums are specifically formulated to treat the delicate skin around the eye area for common ageing concerns such as dryness/dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles.
So, when is the best time to start using an eye cream? Depending on the strength of product, eye creams and serums can be used at any (adult) age. We recommend starting to use an eye cream at the first signs of ageing to achieve maximum, noticeable benefits from use and more improvement over time.

The term ‘Chemical Face Peel’ often conjures up the image of Samantha from Sex and The City wearing a giant black hat to hide her literally peeling face. Don’t let this term or image scare you off! At The Clinic, Chemical Peels are our number one treatment for improving skin tone and texture. We perform over 60 peels per week and have been doing so for over 20 years. Here’s what you need to know about Chemical Peels…
WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?
Chemical Peels treat the Epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, to remove debris, dead skin cells, congestion and pigmentation, and increase cellular turnover to reveal more brighter skin. Different to your typical facial, a Chemical Peel involves the application of a sophisticated chemical agent, which is absorbed into the skin and then rinsed off. We do not waste time with steam or massage as it is the ingredients in the Chemical Peel that have the power to transform your skin. These ingredients have come a long way since Samantha’s experience, so you do not have to literally peel to achieve results.

Although it sounds like something that you should not be putting near your face, what if we told you that hyaluronic acid actually holds the key to smooth, flawless and hydrated skin?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide (carbohydrate) in the human body. That’s right, our own skin cells actually produce hyaluronic acid naturally in a bid to maintain moisture levels.
HA provides moisture, plumpness, and firms the skin. This is achieved as this powerful molecule is capable of binding over 1000 times its weight in water, making it a humectant – a substance that retains moisture. HA works by binding to water molecules, which helps to keep the skin hydrated and plump, and Topically applied, it helps to hydrate the skin and maintain this hydration as a humectant.
.
How do you incorporate Hyaluronic Acid into your routine?
Unlike other potent serums or active ingredients that need to be applied specifically in the morning or at night, hyaluronic acid is the flexible hydrator that can be applied in either the morning or evening, or both.
After cleansing, simply apply to the entire face and neck for maximum skin hydration and plumping. Follow with serums, moisturiser, and SPF.
Who should be using Hyaluronic Acid?
Just like collagen and elastin, the amount of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid decreases as we age. As it decreases our skin volume, hydration and appearance of plumpness also subsides. This is where a topical hyaluronic acid serum has proven beneficial for all skin types. Particularly for dry, dehydrated, sensitive skins, individuals with impaired barrier or aging concerns.
Our Picks for the Best Hyaluronic Serums:
1. Societe Skin Hydration Complex
2. Aspect Dr Hyaluronic Serum
3. Cosmedix Surge
4. PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Serum
5. SkinBetter Science Interfuse Intensive Treatment

WHAT INGREDIENTS TO LOOK OUT FOR:
While we will always recommend specific products for individual clients, key ingredients to look for include:
Salicylic Acid - the gold standard of acne treatment. It's also called a beta-hydroxy acid and it works by exfoliating gently to unclog pores. We love Cosmedix Simply Brilliant Serum.
The addition of salicylic acid to your cleanser can help exfoliate the skin by reducing the dead skin cells that may have built up and contribute to blocked pores.
Sulphur - Draws oil out of skin and has a drying effect, making it another great spot treatment. You'll also find it as the active ingredient in some face masks, like our Cosmedix Clear Deep Clarifying Mask.
Glycolic Acid - An alpha-hydroxy acid and exfoliating ingredient that targets both acne and wrinkles at the same time. This powerful ingredient helps improve skin's texture and reduce fine lines and wrinkles while also clearing up breakouts. We recommend Société Blemish Clarifying Complex.
Retinol - A vitamin A derivative, which the skin absorbs and converts to retinoic acid. The most effective treatment but also the harshest on the skin and should only be used when prescribed or recommended by your skin specialist. For a gentle option, we recommend Cosmedix Define.
If you are still unsure which products will best work for you, organise yourself a free video consultation with one of our Registered Nurses.

Here at The Clinic a frequently asked question is: Why is my skin red? And do I have rosacea?
One of the most common reasons a client will be red is due to Rosacea although there are other reasons a client’s skin may appear red or sensitive.
Rosacea
Rosacea is a skin condition that’s symptoms typically include erythema (redness), presence of papules, flushing of the skin and visible spider veins known as telangiectasias. The most important first step you should take when you suspect you have rosacea is to visit your dermatologist or general practitioner. This form of skin condition requires a professional diagnosis to appropriately treat.
Firstly it is essential that if you do suspect you have rosacea that you are properly diagnosed from a GP or dermatologist. Many people self-diagnose their rosacea or misdiagnose it and end up treating it incorrectly.
We see two main types of rosacea here at The Clinic:
Vascular Rosacea:
Vascular Rosacea is characterised by redness and visible blood vessels in the skin.
Inflammatory Rosacea:
Inflammatory rosacea is characterised by diffused redness across the cheeks, visible blood vessels as well as pustules and papules under the skin. This type of rosacea is quite often mistaken for acne as it has a similar appearance.
Other Skin Disorders
There are several different types of skin condition we treat here at The Clinic. These conditions include psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, and skin with impaired barrier resulting in reactive skin.
The most common skin disorder we see at The Clinic, particularly post COVID restrictions is dermatitis, most commonly perioral dermatitis. Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory rash that commonly presents as a band like irritation spanning from the nostrils to the chin. This can include redness and irritation for the individual. Correct treatment of this condition is essential to ensure that it is not exacerbated.
Skin disorders refer to skin conditions including Psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis as well as reactive skin.
Here at The Clinic another common skin disorder we see is Dermatitis in particularly perioral. Perioral dermatitis most commonly occurs around the nostrils wrapping around the chin. It is essential that you correctly diagnose and treat this dermatitis correctly as if you don’t it can be exacerbated.
Could UV exposure cause reddened skin?
A common misconception about sun exposure is that is only causes pigmentation. However, sun damage can also result in underlying redness in the skin. This type of sun damage is noticeable any where on the body that is exposed to UV including the face, neck, decolletage and hands.
Could my redness be sun damage?
Most people assume that sun damage causes only pigmentation, which is true, but sun damage also causes underlying redness in a lot of people. This type of redness appears most commonly on the face, although the neck check and decolletage can quite often be affected to due to sun exposure in those areas.
Treating redness and sensitive skin
Once we understand what type of skin condition you are experiencing, we can appropriately treat and manage the skin, combining in clinic treatments and at home products.
Here our The Clinic’s most recommended products for reactive, red skin.
The first step when it comes to treating redness and sensitive skin is to start using the correct cleanser. It is important that you introduce into your routine a cleanser which is gentle, soothing, and calming, our top picks here at The Clinic include:

Part three of this series will help you to gain an understanding of what sun damage is, the effects it has on the skin, how its formed and how best to prevent and treat this form of pigmentation.
Understanding Sun Damage Pigmentation
There are several causes of pigmentation, however, in Australia our number one cause if the Sun. Therefore, we notice after repeated, long term UV exposure pigmentation disorders such as sunspots. These sunspots are the result of our skin producing excess melanin to protect itself and its DNA.
This type of pigmentation is typically seen in our fairer skinned clients around the 30 year ago group.
Where does Sun Damage Pigmentation occur?
Sun Damage Pigmentation can occur anywhere on the body that exposed to the sun, including the decolletage, arms, shoulders, and the back of hands.
Treating Sun Damage Pigmentation
To treat sun damaged skin, we recommend a combination of effective at home skin products tailored to your skin as well as in clinic treatments.
Our top recommendations for products to use for sun damage include:
- Aspect on the go SPF
- SBS Even Tone Correcting Serum
- Complete Pigment Plus
- Societe Triple C Serum
For in Clinic treatments, we suggest:
- Peels
We commence your skin care treatment plan starting from level one peel such as our blueberry peel up to our strongest level three peel such as the timeless peel. Your skin needs to be appropriately prepared for level 3 peels. These peels will help with cell turn over, collagen production and result in smoother texture of the skin.
-IPL
IPL 'Intense Pulsed Light' is an effective rejuvenation treatment using light therapy to break down melanin in the skin, reversing pigmentation and creating an even skin tone
-Fraxel Laser
Fraxel is a non-invasive, rejuvenating laser therapy that penetrates the epidermis, targeting the deep layers of the skin for collagen remodelling, with 25% less downtime. Fraxel is our most effective treatment for pigmentation, discolouration, freckles, sun spots, age spots, acne scarring and overall rejuvenation.
Preventing Sun Damage Pigmentation
As with every type of pigmentation, our number one form of defence is always incorporating an SPF into your daily routine.
The Clinics top SPF recommendations are:
- Skin Better Science Cover Shield
- Aspect Sun Environstat on the Go
- La Roche Posay
- ColorScience Total Protection
- Aspect Minerals Powder

This week as part of The Clinics Pigmentation series we are focusing on Melasma.
Part two of this series will help you to gain a deeper understanding of what is Melasma, the causes and how to treat this form of pigmentation.
➡️Understanding Melasma
Melasma presents as large patches of pigmentation generally appearing on the forehead, cheek, upper lip and chin. These patches are generally symmetrical. This type of pigmentation is caused by fluctuation in hormone levels and may be triggered by pregnancy, the contraceptive pill and other hormonal therapies.
➡️Why is Melasma so difficult to treat?
Melasma is notoriously difficult to treat. This is because it can be aggravated by UV exposure, inflammation, and heat. This form of pigmentation also involves the deeper layers of the skin, which are at a higher risk of rebound pigmentation, if not treated correctly.
➡️Treating Melasma
To treat Melasma, it is essential to firstly introduce a pigmentation inhibitor into your product routine. A pigment inhibitor, reduces and regulates the production of Melanin, by inhibiting Tyrosinase, which is an enzyme responsible for Melanin production. Some recommendations of a pigment inhibitor include:
- Skin Better Science Even Skin Correcting Serum
- Aspect Dr Complete Pigment Plus
- Cosmedix Elite X-Cell.
Once your skin is appropriately prepped, the recommended treatments for reducing the appearance of your pigmentation, include the PCA Perfecting Peel, Skin pen and the deep sea peel.

Pigmentation refers to uneven skin tone, which presents as brown spots on the skin. This discolouration is caused by the overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for giving skin its colour. When melanin is produced in excess, it accumulates in the layers of the skin causing it to darken.
The three most common types of pigmentation we see at The Clinic are:
1. SUN DAMAGE
Sun Damage pigmentation is a direct result of years of daily exposure to the sun. This damage to the skin causes darkened patches, spots and uneven skin tone often referred to as sunspots. This type of pigmentation is most often seen in sun-exposed areas such as the face, chest, shoulders and arms.
2. MELASMA
Melasma Pigmentation is Commonly seen during pregnancy, Melasma presents as large patches of pigmentation generally appearing on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip and chin. This type of pigmentation is caused by fluctuations in hormone levels and may be triggered by pregnancy, the contraceptive pill and other hormonal therapies.
3. POST-INFLAMMATORY HYPERPIGMENTATION
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation develops from any form of injury to the skin, including burns and trauma, and can also occur after aggressive skin treatments such as chemical peels and laser.
Stay tuned for our four-part series as we discuss pigmentation and the most common types of pigmentation in more depth.
