Late 60s early 70s Craigleith Ski Club Scenes HomeMoviesdotCa - historic films of Canada 2021-12-08 | Craigleith Ski Club near Collingwood, Ontario was founded in 1958 on property previously owned by relatives of Sir Sandford Fleming. The chalets you see in this homemovie film were the first to be built by the original members of the club. They were all torn down some years ago as 'unsightly'. My family was among the first 50-60 original members of the Craighleth Ski Club. One of the chalets, an A-frame, sadly not filmed, my family built. I added a couple of my family photos. One photo is of the Craigleth Ski Team winning a race. My younger brother Dan, 2nd from left, was on the team before he crashed into a tree and lost a kidney. The guy in the upper right corner was Steve Podborski. First ski lift was a long thick rope tow driven by a small airplane engine that only had two speeds - zero and 100 miles per hour. Everybody went thru at least 3 pairs of rope tow burnt smoking mitts or gloves per ski day, and, you were very lucky if you didn't go 'airborne' into the trees at the top if you didn't let go at just the right split second. Club house was a tiny shack, about 6 people at a time size, with an old wood or coal pot belly stove that your gloves and boots would melt from if you got too close. But you did anyways to thaw out your frozen hands and feet. Several members had to have a finger or toe amputated. Lunch was a twice daily visit from a coffee truck that always got stuck in the snow and had to be dug out, or wait for a local farm tractor to come pull it out every time. Every summer, volunteer club members would have to help with ski hill preparations, pulling out tree stumps and removing rocks and smoothing the worst of the surfaces. At the end of the day, each chalet member would take turns holding a hot dog and burger BBQ for everybody. If there were grazing horses on the property, kids might be lucky to hop one for a ride, usually getting thrown off. Truly, the good old days.

So I had youtube mute the song.Then for the messages part I added UK band 'Nashville Teens" (stupid band name for a UK band) 1964 song "Tobacco Road" which also got tagged copyright claim so as to show ads during it's playback, not a strike against me, but blocked viewing in some countries. -- Cuba, Syria, North Korea, and some other dictatorship country, LOL, none of which I care if they can watch it.Several times in the past I had some uploads viewing blocked because I'd used paid-for-public-domain SmartSound audio music and I had to spend a lot of time proving that I had the right to use the music.It all seems quite bizarre to me.

2021-01-14 St Catharines Heritage Committee Meeting Mountain Locks Park HomeMoviesdotCa - historic films of Canada 2021-01-16 | NOTE THIS: Yesterday's January 14th, 2021 Heritage meeting was NOT listed on the city's website list of meetings, ergo, no meetings list webpage announcement nor link for the public to find to be able to watch the live youtube broadcast. The live broadcast thru youtube did not appear till well into the meeting, and today it is no longer watchable. It has been marked 'no longer available - private', so nobody of the public can ever watch it. IMHO, both of those are violations of our rights as citizens of St Catharines. I want to know who's responsible. Guess what though, I managed to record the entire meeting as HD mp4 file. LOL at whomever the responsible was.On the one hand I agree with Brian Narhi's "Ire".On the other, I fully understand why some people over the past year prior to yesterday's Heritage meeting got very hot under the collar, including me, and said things the Heritage Committee volunteers didn't deserve. It's because of shenanigans by others, not the Heritage Committee, like no online Jan 14th meeting announcement, no link to watch, delayed live broadcast, and the meeting having since been made private so nobody can watch it.IMHO, there is fishy stinky things going on somewhere within the city admin process. The Heritage Committee volunteers are just as much victims of these shenanigans by others as the public is.The historical advocate presenters at yesterday's Heritage meeting all did very well presenting. The Heritage Committee, several councilors, and city staff, all did excellent also. Everybody conducted themselves in a very proper respectful manner.Don Sawyer related that there are a lot of people of all ages including young people who care a lot about St Catharines' and Canada's history and preserving it, especially the truly special, such as what's left the old Welland Canals.Much was said about the upcoming 2029 200th Anniversary of the beginning of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Welland Canals, how important they were and still are to the economy and history of St Catharines, Niagara Region, and Canada, and how Mountain Locks Park can play a pivotol part in celebrating that Anniversary history, thus resulting in much economic benefits to be had from doing so.Colleen Beard proved at least several of the proposed parking spaces will cause lock damage and destruction, and Kimberly Monk presented strongly for a full Archaeological Assessment.Reference to the Rideau Canal was made as example of what can be done for some part of the old Welland Canals, specifically the 2nd Canal Mountain Locks and further north to Westchester Crescent.IMHO:Personally, I think Montreal's Lachine Canal would make a much better reference. After the The St Lawrence Seaway was completed in 1959, the Lachine Canal was abandoned, most of it was buried, and the rest fell into ruin. In 1988 a huge Niagara Region historical advocates' campaign proposal was made to governments and in 1989 came within weeks of achieving National Historic Landscape Designation for the old Welland Canals, and being allocated $ 100 million for "The Welland Canals Development Corridor" from Lake to Lake. But, by the end of 1989 suddenly overnite the bottom literally fell out of that project, it sank, and other much smaller attempts since never came close again. Interestingly, almost ten years later in 1997, 14km of Montreal's Lachine Canal received $ 100 million to restore it to full functionality for use by kayaks and canoes, sided by hiking and biking and green space, and, Historic Site Designation. Since then the entire related area of Montreal was soon revitalized by a further over $ 350 million worth of investments, resulting in over a Billion $ worth of business and recreational economic activity.(continued in 1st comment below)

At time 4:31 Jim can be seen in the front of Rhodes Chuck Wagon after buying some food, I assume recorded by his wife, shortly before it was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel. Ferries from Toronto and other places would bring people and take them home at the end of the day. Trains and trollies did the same. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Welland Canals began/terminated there. All gone now but the merry-go-round.In January 2020 Neil Peart of Canadian music band, Rush, passed away. Peart grew up in St Catharines, used to go to the park often in the summer, had very fond memories thereof, and In 1975 wrote and sang the song "Lakeside Park" about it. A memorial to Peart will soon be erected in the park.

Gary's cousin, Jonathan, son of Saul, found a huge treasure of information and AV recordings from those years, after Saul passed away. Jonathan made a documentary of it he called, "My Father and the Man in Black" Several family members, including Gary, played Saul at different ages in the documentary. My mother, Joyce Lee, was in the film, beginning at 13 minutes 2 seconds. She toured the film across Canada.In 1983 working women got far less pensions than men because on average women got, and still do get paid 13 % less for same job. House wives got nothing, even when their husbands died first. This film helped make some changes. Today there's OAS and GIS along with CPP, but when one spouse dies, that's all cut by at least half for the survivor, often more than half.(steve hartwell - homemovies.ca)
1980 96 99 Ruth Redmonds Battlefield of Lundys Lane HomeMoviesdotCa - historic films of Canada 2020-04-03 | In 1814 the Battle of Lundy's Lane in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada was the last major battle of the War of 1812, when Canadian, British, and Métis allies defeated the invading Americans and (future) Canada won the war. If we'd lost that battle, Canada would not exist today, instead would have become part of the United States.Eventually forgotten by 100 years later, the Battlefield of Lundy's Lane was constantly under threat of being lost forever to developers, ironically mostly Americans.In 1954 Ruth Redmond began a 40 year battle to save the Battlefield of Lundy's Lane from the Americans for all time as a Canada Historical Site, and in 1996 she finally succeeded in doing so.This video includes the 1980 Tom Cherington show episode (CHCH TV Hamilton) about Ruth's battle to save the battlefield to honour what happened there.
