TLoZSR
pretty insane new route :)
updated 11 years ago
I know this differs from what I've uploaded here in the past, but I'm really proud of what my friend and I have put together here!
Inspired by classic JRPGs such as Shin Megami Tensei and Trails, we've put together a short (~60 minutes) prototype focusing heavily on fleshing out the core mechanics of our strategic turn-based battle system. Explore the forest, find new party members, and fight powerful foes. Exploiting weaknesses and efficiently using Critica is crucial to make it through the forest alive!

What I do on this segment might appear to be a little bit confusing so I'll try to explain it the best I can.
Essentially, by doing Back in Time to get the sword and shield in the first segment, we've locked ourselves out of actually getting the sword and shield from Ordon. Midna doesn't catch on to this and still thinks we need to acquire those items so she won't let us into the twilight. The way around this involves luring a bokoblin over to the twilight wall and positioning him just right so you can do what's called a Long Jump Attack (LJA) over the trigger where Midna turns you back, and into the one where she allows you to continue on into the twilight.
You'll see more LJAs later on when we get the boomerang, but by jump attacking when the bokoblin is at the peak of his knockback from the first jump attack, we can jump attack much further.
This may seem like an easy segment, but quite a bit of luck is involved in all of this playing out correctly. First of all, the bokoblin's initial spawn is random, and some spawns lose quite a bit of time. Second, you need to position the bokoblin quickly and most of the time he won't stop swinging at you. In this attempt he only swung once (which you actually need that swing) so in regards to the number of swings, the segment was perfect. However, I did have him in position for a brief moment of time before he decided to attack me, so a small time loss did occur there.

This was a reasonably difficult segment to really get down, partly because I was using some techniques for the first few hours of attempts that could have seriously been improved (which I did)
The deal with this segment is that it's a bunch of movement. The movement through the sewers can be pretty difficult as you end up with a lot of awkward camera angles. My movement in this attempt was overall decent.
You can break the box at the beginning of the segment before the cutscene, but I do miss it in this attempt. It's not a huge deal as it only saves ~3-4 frames, or approximately .1 seconds.
There are 4 frame perfect trick opportunities in this segment. When you use Z to jump with Midna, if there's text before the jumps, you can jump immediately if you hit A on a certain frame, if not you have to wait about a second (as seen on the Midna jumps to reach the roof.) There are 3 places where you can get a "first framer" with Midna in this segment and I hit 2 of them. The other frame perfect trick is a cutscene skip on top of the roof. This saves about 1.5 seconds and went perfectly in this attempt.
I save over file two on the roof in order to have a file here for later use. It's a very convenient location to get Back in Time from. The end of segment save is on file 1, which is the file we'll be using pretty much here on out.

By far the most frustrating segment up to this point despite only taking about an hour to get. The problem is you just mash the A button until Bo cooperates with wrestling. This actually really took a toll on my hands.
The strat I use for Bo is to simply attempt to slap him at the beginning of each phase. On the rare chance that the slap actually works (wrestling is basically rock paper scissors. Bo has moves that either beat or tie with a slap) then I have to mash the A button to push Bo off in one interaction. This basically has to happen twice in a row.
After Bo it's some simple rolling to the Spring where all the kids get abducted and we're presented with a nice save prompt.
Extra notes: I missed a roll in this segment which is fairly annoying, but not annoying enough for me to put up with another hour of destroying my hands. I'm not happy about it, but it's not a huge deal either.
The segment attempt time is not very correct due to my program not saving it :( but it should be a good approximation. The segment attempts are correct.

Holy hell what a segment. Ok, so initially this segment was planned to also include all of segment 4 (Bo and saving at the spring) but after dragonbane looked into some timing stuff it turns out that saving in Bo's house before him turns out to be slightly (10 frames) faster. The save file on file 3 is important, it must be in Bo's house so this segment takes care of that save.
Moving on to the actual segment. It was so amazing... Except for the one hiccup in rolling. I'm so upset that everything else went perfect on the segment when I missed a roll towards the beginning. In reality though, the missed roll isn't a huge issue and getting the first frame roll after talking to the guy before goats makes up for it. Also my goat time was absolutely incredible. I had gotten a 17.67 second goat time in another segment attempt that I kinda liked, but spent a couple hours grinding this segment out to get a 16.18! nearly a 1.5 second difference. I doubt I could get a goat time this good again.

Really easy segment, just some roll optimization. I think everything went about as well as it could for a human. You may be wondering how I have the sword and shield and tunic. That's a by-product of the BiT glitch that I did in the first segment.

So, I'm doing this again. I first started this project about 5 or so years ago. I've learned a lot about speedrunning since then and I'm attempting this again. This time with a very strong desire to finish.
Segmented is a category where the speedrun is split into pieces (segments) and each piece is treated as its own little speedrun. Then you add them all up at the end to determine your final time. Timing starts upon file start, and ends upon file save.
Anyway, moving onto the run notes:
The first segment of this run is extremely interesting. I start on file 3 for reasons you'll see later, but it is important! This segment is only a minute long, but two major tricks happen. The first of which is Gate Clip, which allows us to skip parts of Ordon. Immediately after clipping through the gate, I jump into the void and reset my console on a specific frame to activate Back in Time (or BiT for short) BiT spawns link on the title screen map and after I void out again and save I'll have items that link had on the title screen (such as the sword) and some triggers will be different.
Some of the audio is cut out to avoid Nintendo claiming the video, I don't agree with them claiming videos, so I've done that. It's only a few minutes of the entire video, so hopefully it won't be much of a bother!
