For those of you unfamiliar with my work, I take the stories of video games and attempt to turn them into movies that would be enjoyable and understandable whether you play the game or not. Where some people may just compile cutscenes, I realize that is simply not enough information to understand the story, so I include as much gameplay as necessary to avoid plot holes and keep the story flowing nicely. I also try to, whenever possible, treat myself like the director, camera operator, and actor. While not always possible, I try to play as if I were on a movie set, rather than just playing a game the way I normally would. If walking is more appropriate, I slow down. If certain camera movements might look better than just whipping the camera around, I try to do that whenever possible. If the character wouldn't actually know where to go next, I try to control their movements as if they were figuring it out, even though I already know what to do.
I also focus on removing elements on screen that make it super obvious that you're watching it a game instead of a hollywood movie, such as button prompts, gameplay objectives, chapter titles, etc. Some of these I'm not always able to remove, but I removed nearly every button prompt, and most gameplay objective boxes as well. I was able to remove a few, but not most chapter titles, simply because they covered a large portion of the center of the screen. Immersive mode in the settings helped a lot, but I did need to utilize visual effects and other editing techniques to remove the rest.
This was a much bigger process than I expected it to be. The movie ended up being quite long, and there were a lot more button prompts and other things leftover that I wanted to remove to ensure the most cinematic experience possible. This project required nearly 500 VFX shots, spanning over 50,000 frames total. I worked on this movie for 4 months, which was one of my longest movie projects to date.

Kratos and Atreus must prepare themselves for the apocalyptic battle, journeying through all 9 realms to do so. This is a movie edit of the video game by the same title. This video will look the best on HDR screens, but has been custom color graded to look great in SDR as well. This video also supports 5.1 surround sound.
If you've never seen one of my movies before, the idea is to take the story of a video game, and edit it in a way where anybody can watch and enjoy it, whether they play video games or not. If you haven't played this game, this movie will give you the opportunity to enjoy this story you might have missed otherwise, but even if you have played the game, this movie can allow you to enjoy the story in a new way. I often find that watching these stories in this way allows me to see the bigger picture of the story better than when I'm playing myself. Of course, with the length of this movie, you will likely need to break it into smaller sessions. Chapters are provided for good stopping points, but I will also be releasing this story as smaller episodes every week on my second channel, @APGames
My goal is to bring this as close to a movie watching experience as possible, with a focus on the core of the story itself. I try to reduce any gameplay down to just what's necessary to understand and enjoy the story. If there are sections I can cut without introducing plot holes, and can be done in a way that doesn't feel jarring, I will generally try to do so. That being said, this is still a long game, with the core story often taking over 30 hours to complete, with a high percentage of the story missions being critical to that story, so this was a difficult task. Typically I will avoid side missions, although in this case there were a couple small details from some side missions that I felt were important to avoiding unresolved story threads, as well as helping the flow of the story in one spot, with only minimal impact to the runtime (just a few minutes).
On top of that, one of the things that really sets my content apart from other similar videos is that I try my best to remove as many "game indicators" as I can. Elements that appear on screen that remind you that you're watching a game. I disable as much of the HUD as possible, but then I also go through extensive VFX work to remove as many button prompts and pop ups as I can. Not everything is removable (especially some elements that appeared center screen), and there are some that I missed, but the vast majority of these elements have been removed. For this movie in particular, I worked on 541 total VFX shots, covering 133,893 frames, or nearly 75 minutes of VFX total. Additionally, when I'm able to, I do try to keep a nice control over the camera, trying to make any gameplay feel as cinematic as possible. My movies are always recorded on replay, and I watch walkthroughs to prepare as well, so that I know what I'm doing and where I'm going in my gameplay.

This was one of the games I felt was most deserving to be turned into a movie on my list, but I was worried about how much work it was going to be. I was right. This was my largest project yet! This video is optimized to look best if you watch it on a device that supports HDR youtube, but I put in a lot of work to make sure the SDR grade looks fantastic as well.
For those of you who may be unfamiliar with my work, my goal is to take a video game's story, and edit it into a movie, designed in a way that can be understood and enjoyed whether you play games or not. A big part of that process is removing as many HUD elements as possible, to give a cleaner, more hollywood like presentation. Those HUD elements can hurt the immersion when watching as a movie, so the more of them I can remove, the better.
I'm proud to say I was able to remove almost every HUD element in the game, with a few exceptions. While there was a setting which reduced HUD distractions very slightly, for the most part, QTEs, dialogue choices, and objective indicators needed to be removed through extensive use of VFX. I ended up creating a total of 822 VFX shots. Post production took 3.5 months straight of working every single day! Under typical gameplay moments, the average time between one VFX shot and the next closest shot was 4 seconds! Based on the typical length of the effects, I estimate that VFX represented approximately 30% of the gameplay, or about 15% of the movie as a whole.
There are a few areas where you might see some leftover HUD elements. These could happen if removal simply wasn't possible, if the HUD element represented new information or a thought the character had, or in a few cases, I simply missed them, even on rewatches.
This game is obviously a choice based game, so the story you see here is simply my journey through the story. Because there are so many choices that are possible, I had to carefully study the flowcharts and walkthroughs, and play most missions multiple times to get the footage I wanted to assemble my version of the story. Even doing this, I still wasn't able to get all of my favorite moments, although I tried to craft the best story I could tell, given the limitations.

If you haven't seen my work before, my goal is to edit together the story of a game in a style that can be understood and enjoyed by anybody, whether you've played the game or not, or even if you don't play games at all. Unlike some videos, this isn't just a compilation of cutscenes. While my focus is on the story being told, there's much more to the story than just the cutscenes. Some of the gameplay represents and important part of the storytelling, and therefore must be included. That being said, I do try to keep the gameplay time down. If I can cut a section without sacrificing storytelling, I will. The main goal is making sure any edits I make don't cause the audience to get confused, while making sure the gameplay remains entertaining to watch.
I do some other things to try to improve the movie watching experience. The main thing is turning off as many HUD options as I can. Thankfully, this game has many options to disable parts of the screen, although you will still see some things. While recording this movie, in particular, objective markers and button prompts were the two things I couldn't disable, as well as a few other miscellaneous pop ups. At the beginning, I tried using VFX to remove all of this stuff, and I was able to do that for the first 15 minutes or so of the movie, but then I decided to give up on the objective markers, which were becoming too complex to remove. I used a story moment of Aloy suggesting using the Focus to reveal the path to start showing them. That being said, when I was 70% of the way done recording, the game was updated to allow disabling the objective markers and button prompts, so you'll stop seeing the objective markers once the story gets closer to the end.

I recommend watching this video on an HDR capable device if you have one, but I've custom tonemapped the HDR image to look great in SDR as well.
If you aren't familiar with my work, I take video games and I try to edit them into a movie experience that can be enjoyed by everybody, whether you play video games or not. For people who don't play games, or couldn't play this particular game for whatever reason, this gives them the opportunity to enjoy a great story they might have otherwise missed out on, but even if you've played the game, it allows you to experience the story in a new way. When playing games, we usually split the story up into multiple gameplay sessions, so by the end of the game, the beginning of the story isn't as fresh in our minds, as well as other smaller details. By watching in a compressed format like this, you get to keep the entire story fresh in your mind, and also experience it with better pacing from scene to scene.
For my movies, I want to include just as much gameplay as is necessary to understand and enjoy the story, without creating plot holes or a feeling of confusion in the audience, especially for those who haven't experienced the story before. This is a game that's heavy on combat sequences, and I wanted to cut the gameplay up more to flow through the worlds without needing to show the entirety of every combat scenario. When it made sense, I would cut entire sections of a world, or otherwise do quicker montages through the various combat encounters in the world. This required more chopping up of the gameplay than I've done in some other movies, but I think I was able to find a good balance that showcased the action without leaving the viewer bored with it taking too much time between story beats.
Like my other movies, I also work to try to minimize distractions that make it super obvious you're watching a game. The main way I achieved this was to cut off the top and bottom of the HUD, by reformatting the image to a 2.40:1 aspect ratio, and using "tilt and scan" techniques to manually adjust the framing of the image for every since one of the ~2000 shots in the movie. I also used over 200 VFX shots to remove some other HUD elements, such as when the game prompts you to press the right stick or d-pad to interact with things, as well as some progress notifications. One area I was unfortunately not able to remove was the enemy life/stamina bars, and that's simply because of how often they appear on screen.

Because of some copyright issues, for youtube I've edited the music in a couple scenes to remove John Williams music from the Episode III soundtrack, and replaced it from tracks from the game's soundtrack instead. However, the full quality downloads available to mid and top tier patreon supporters include the original unedited audio, if you'd like a slightly more authentic experience for those two scenes. The changes only account for about 3 minutes total of music, but a scene at the end in particular feels much better with the original music imo.

Took me an hour of dying over and over again until I could finally beat him. Then I thought the game was giving me a game breaking bug, with the boss getting stuck in this animation loop forever, so I kept replaying the boss for another hour, getting stuck the same way the two other times I successfully beat him.
Turns out I never bothered trying to press L1, which caused a pulse and loaded the next cutscene. I feel really stupid, because you used this same mechanic on corrupted plants all throughout the game leading up to this, pressing square to use the Rot and then L1 to cause a pulse, destroying the corruption, but I never bothered to try it on this boss lol.
Anyway, here's the final time I beat him, with all the improvements in my combat that I learned along the way. Didn't even need to heal this time, which I definitely needed the other times I beat him. Too bad I didn't get any parries in this time. I was doing pretty good with them on some runs, like this attempt (my first successful) I posted on twitter:

The reason I decided not to include those arcs was because they were not super important to the main story being told, either regarding the Eivor/Sigurd connection, expansion of the Isu lore, or hunting the Order. This one, however, has something unique about it that the other cut arcs don't, it resolves the story arcs of characters introduced in my first movie. While it's not important that viewers of the movies see what happened to these characters to understand the story, seeing what happens here does finish those character arcs, and provides some extra context for some scenes in the beginning of the second movie.
If my movies were much shorter, and there was a more natural place to fit this story in them, I might have considered including it in the movies, but as it is, the movies are quite long, and this scene would significantly disrupt the flow of the storytelling as well. However, if you want to place it somewhere, it could probably technically fit anywhere between the arc these characters are introduced in and the beginning of the second movie, but in game, it takes place in the time that passes between the two movies' stories.

This is by far the longest Assassin's Creed story, and this meant this project would be massive in scope. It took 5 months to work on these movies. The story alone was 72 hours of gameplay, even though I went through it as quickly as I could, doing only the bare minimum level grinding. Because it was so big, I had to cut a LOT of what the game requires you to do. 62 quests were cut, out of 154 required story quests, as well as plenty of other grinding, raids, and assassination targets. Some of the cut quests were interesting stories on their own, but simply did not have a specific purpose to the overall story.
On the other hand, there are still some quests that I was originally considering cutting to focus a little more closely on the main Eivor/Sigurd storyline, and that would of course have shortened the run time, however, those quests are essentially the main Assassin/Templar focus in this game, and it would be a shame to lose that. In the end, they also proved to improve overall story structure and pacing, so despite the added length, I think it made sense to keep them. There's still plenty cut out. I estimate that approximately 70% of my total play time in this game ended up either being necessary grinding or story arcs I ended up cutting from the movie.
Those familiar with my previous movies will know that I try my best to remove as many on screen HUD elements as I can, to improve the movie watching experience. The same was true with this movie, and the main focus of my efforts was to remove map indicators in the eagle shots, which I used for establishing shots. During gameplay, there are select areas where I was able to remove things, but in most cases, the main mission objective marker, and some other objective markers needed to remain on screen. This is usually because it's either on screen too long to realistically remove, or is simply displayed in a way where removal is impossible. Overall, while some of those longer scenes may have been theoretically doable, it probably would have at least doubled post production time, so I had to pick and choose what made sense to do. That being said, the game still has plenty of HUD options I was able to remove. Options were better in some other games though. Overall, I ended up creating 137 VFX shots, covering over 23,000 frames total.
