In this episode we discuss common misconceptions about the geologic column and the fossils it contains. Many people remember being taught that the fossil record shows a progression of evolution over millions of years, with a certain fixed order of fossils showing a lineage of simpler to more complex forms. Recent findings that have forced a rethinking of evolutionary assumptions that overthrow the idea that fossils are never found 'out of place'.

There are millions of specimens of ice age plants and animals in the Page Museum's collections. Yet excavators and preparators will continue to dig up, clean and catalog millions of more fossils for the foreseeable future. The Page Museum's Chief Curator, Dr. John Harris, explains how paleontological and climatological research at the museum relies upon on tar pit's prolific fossil deposits.

Does the evidence support Evolution?

Find out what evolutionary theory actually predicts about intermediate forms in the fossil record.

Evolution is testable ... human and ape chromosome numbers.

Theories are crucial to science because they provide a coherent framework for making sense out of scientific observations.

An example of such a theory is the Theory of Evolution. Without the theoretical framework of evolution, biologists would be limited to observing living things and noting the similarities and differences between them.

Fossil discoveries, combined with evidence from morphological, genetic, and embryological studies of existing organisms lead us to a powerful explanation of a large set of biological observations. These observations only make sense using the REAL science of evolution.

Route 66 crossed the Illinois Basin in the state of Illinois. It cut right through an extensive coal strip mine area what is (was) the source of large numbers of fossils and known as the Mazon Creek (and Essex) fossil beds. Shown here are a variety of fossil plants and animals which came from this area and are representative of it. Many of these were collected in the 1950's and 60's when collecting of these fossils was especially productive.

Dr. Austin is a field research geologist who has done research on six of the seven continents of the world. His research has taken him by helicopter into the crater on Mount St. Helens, by bush plane onto glaciers in Alaska, by raft through the Grand Canyon, on horseback into the high Sierra, by elevator into the world’s deepest coal mines, by SCUBA onto the Great Barrier Reef, by rail into Korean backcountry, by foot onto barren plateaus of southern Argentina, and by four-wheel drive into remote desert areas of Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Austin received his PhD from Pennsylvania State University in sedimentary geology.

New dinosaur species are still being discovered by scientists around the world.

The first dinosaur fossils found in the country of Venezuela belong to a newly discovered species, and are reportedly some of the oldest dinosaur remains that have ever been identified by archaeologists.

Researchers working at the La Quinta Formation in Tachira State, Venezuela have found fossils of dinosaurs that they believe to be around 200 million years old.

They named the species Laquintasaura venezuelae, after the location where the fossils were found.

Paul Barrett, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum in London, and lead author of the study, is quoted as saying: "There are many surprising firsts with Laquintasaura. Not only does it expand the distribution of early dinosaurs, its age makes it important for understanding their early evolution and behavior."

Experts think that Laquintasaura lived during the earliest part of the Jurassic period, after a mass extinction event at the end of the Triassic era.

The new species is believed to be an ancestor of the well known three-horned Triceratops dinosaur

Other data from the study shows that the newly discovered species of dinosaur traveled in herds, (1,6,1) eating mostly ferns along with small prey like insects.

The new species is part of a group of bird-hipped dinosaurs, which experts know very little about because of their scarcity in the fossil record.

The Geologic ColumnThe Geologic Column
The Geologic Column
Arlo Moehlenpah 📤 5 years ago 2013-12-14
This video answers the following questions: What is the geologic column? How dependable are index fossils in dating rocks? Where can the geologic column be found? How do flood geologists explain the order of the fossils? The geologic column is really just an idea rather than a column of rock. The complete "geologic column" does not exist anywhere in the world except in textbooks and other media. How do flood geologists explain the order of the fossils? Moehlenpah, www.doinggood.org

Specialists at the Berlin Museum of Natural History came one step closer to immortalising their vast collection on Friday, after using the first 3D scanner of its kind to digitise close to their entire back catalogue.

Opening up new opportunities for archaeologists and natural history enthusiasts alike, the one-of-a-kind CultLab3D scanner was used to process and archive millions of the museum's cultural artifacts, many of which were previously unavailable to the public.

The scanner is capable of using 14 cameras to shoot up to 6,561 pictures from different angles at the same time, making the digitised information incredibly detailed. Once scanned, the data can be used to recreate virtual and 3D printer models, letting researchers study, replicate, and handle scale versions of dinosaur bones and fossils without damaging the originals.

Not only allowing the creation of long-lasting life-sized dinosaur models, the scanned 3D structures will also be available online, allowing both enthusiasts and specialists to access the exhibits from the comfort of their own home.

Upside down geological columnUpside down geological column
Upside down geological column
CMIcreationstation 📤 2 years ago 2016-07-05
Did you know that part of the geological column is found upside-down in Pakistan? At the foot of the Karakorum Mountains, in the Salt Range Formation, scientists have discovered fossilized plants and insects. From an evolutionary perspective, these remains belong to the upper part of the geological column. However, this formation lies beneath Cambrian rocks, which are supposedly over 400 million years older. So why are the fossils of more complex life buried below fossils considered much more primitive? This is a vexing evolutionary problem. Discoveries such as these support the biblical version of earth history, whereby the geological column is primarily a consequence of the global flood and its aftermath. It is no surprise that there is some order in the fossil record, such as sea creatures buried beneath land creatures, and mobile creatures such as birds near the top. But, as the Salt Range Formation testifies, the ordered charts that adorn textbooks aren’t necessarily what we find in the field.

Are fossils ever found in the wrong place?
For more details visit: http://creation.com/creation-magazine-live-episode-25

In this episode we discuss common misconceptions about the geologic column and the fossils it contains. Many people remember being taught that the fossil record shows a progression of evolution over millions of years, with a certain fixed order of fossils showing a lineage of simpler to more complex forms. Recent findings that have forced a rethinking of evolutionary assumptions that overthrow the idea that fossils are never found 'out of place'.
