The Vintage Appliance Emporium
Vintage 1979 National MC-7770 Ultra Compact Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
updated
Here's one of the trio of Hoover The One series machines that I bought new (graded) back in 2007 / 2008.
It's sat in the garage for many years. I saw it the other day covered in filth and thought I'd really like to clean it up and make a video of it. So I plugged it in but there was no life in the brushroll.
In this video we're going to open up the head and see if we can get it working again.

Richard gave me this one owner from new SEBO X1 and there are a few things wrong with it. Not sure what the best thing to do with it is so thought I'd ask you guys.
Please let me know in the comments :)

As I mention in the video - sorry I didn't film the restoration process. I can assure you it was thorough. The machine was fully stripped and cleaned, the motor was stripped, cleaned and lubricated including washing out the fans which were loaded up with dust.
I then popped in a Numatic Henry HEPA-FLO dustbag and we're off!
Amazingly, as I was getting ready to film this video, I laid my hands upon a Miele powerhead that that been hanging out in the lounge for months. It was the perfect opportunity to combine the two together to make the ultimate S220 - I dread to think how much this set up would have cost back in 1980. A LOT of money.

It's actually not as bad as I thought it would be. Join me in this video where we explore my BUSH in great detail; the good, the bad and the hairy.

One of them is pretty special and I've been after this model for a while. Are they any good? Let's find out.

I'm always astounded at just how easy these machines are to work on. You can have the motor in your hands in less than two minutes - try doing that on a modern Dyson lol.

Late in 2022 there was a vacuum repair shop in outer London that was closing down and getting rid of all their stock. Some of the collectors in the UK shot over there like a plague of vultures to strip it clean.
I was going to go but it was a six hour round trip and people being people had already "reserved" the machines they wanted (I didn't know we could do this) so ultimately there was no point in going as grubby fingers had already been electronically placed on the items that I would have wanted.
Dearest Sam knew that there were parts I could do with so me made me up a couple of boxes of parts that he thought I would find useful.

In this video we're going to have a look inside, see what's wrong and attempt to repair it.
If your plastic chassis Hoover upright has this kind of fault, hopefully you can follow the video and repair your machine.

Sorry I've been away for so long and have not posted much content over the past four months.
Watch the video and allllll will be explained.

Lots of love,
Steve xx
They were everywhere when was a child; this model did seem to be particularly popular, probably because it was the cheaper end of the market by the time '73 rolled around.
I bought this Constellation in February from Ebay having paid £35 including postage. Shame that it didn't come with all the tools but I do have them scattered around the house and will compile the correct set when we finally get to see the machine in action.
In a future video we will be giving the machine a service, removing the suppressor and a proper good clean.

In this video I'm going to answer the final set of questions that you guys sent in.
Thanks for a superb response, I really appreciate it. Some of the questions were too filthy for public consumption and I've kept those back for a personal response lol ;)

Anyway, I bought two Miele S228i cylinder vacuum cleaners from eBay and they've arrived! The box is SO heavy. Was actually a bit of a struggle to move it, especially when the angry-faced postman dropped them off.
Let's get this box open and see what kinda condition the Mieles are in. I'm hoping they aren't too bad but we can always make a good one out of the two.
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe!
So I thought why don't we use this as an opportunity for all my dear viewers to submit questions which I will then answer in an upcoming video.
Get your thinking caps on - you can ask whatever you like... but it might not get answered lol ;) Leave your questions below OR email them to me at:

Looking forward to hearing from you!
Whilst it never ever sounded 'good' I think we can make it sound a bit better.
So in this video we're going to take it apart, give it a light refurbishment, and see if we can make it a bit better.
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
I shall explain :)
Let's go back to 1978 for some superb German engineering and a gorgeous avocado green colour scheme with this fabulous Miele S220.
I've never owned one of these cleaners that's quite so early in the production run. I /think/ this series ran from 1975 to 1983 although I could be very wrong there. Please do let me know in the comments!
And whilst you're here don't forget to subscribe :)
But not before I rescued the electronics so I could make a new test lead!
This lead allows me to start any motor on the bench at 50% power and then with the flick of a switch, move to 100% power! Should prove quite useful.
Hope you enjoy the short. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
It belongs to a client of my mate Richard who rather grandly promised that I could repair it. But I wasn't sure that I could.
Let's take a look at it, see what's wrong and attempt to repair it.
Special guest appearance from Emerson at the end!
Hope you enjoy this video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
And a happy New Year to all my dear viewers!
The Junior was a much easier fix although it did have me worried for a time.
In this video we're going to see them both in action in a trip down memory lane back to 1984.

I've been hosting my dear friend Jack this weekend as he's popped over for a visit.
There's nothing we like doing more than dragging a few vacuum cleaners out and giving them a run so Jack chose a selection that he wanted to try and I filmed him using them.
Jack, like myself, is another Hoover FanBoy so we very much enjoyed having a poke about in the Hoover Room and discussing our favourite machines.
Stick around until the end of the video to see a classic Hoover Fail (sigh).
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe!
I get a bit worried when I can't turn the armature on these machines, the reason for that is explained at the end of the video.
Is the machine saveable? Will it live again? Let's find out together!
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
I do lol XD
Join me as we disassemble the early Turbopower 2 and attempt to make some repairs.
Still not sure what to do with that bag door. Any suggestions folks?
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
This is both the epitome of AWFUL and IMPORTANT at exactly the same time.
Big thanks to the lovely Charlie at Wot Not for selling it to me :)
Join me as we dive into the last gasp of the iconic Hoover Turbopower series as we take a look at this late 1997 super-basic example.
On sale at this time were:
U1060 Total System in Stellar Red
U1050 Hard Bag in Venus Blue
U1426 Junior in (Unknown) Blue
If anyone knows where I can get my hands on a U1050 please give me a shout.
Interesting to note that at this point in time Hoover were selling the Mk1 Turbopowers AND:
The cost reduced Turbopower 2 / 3
The PurePower uprights
And god knows what else!
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe!
It certainly WAS cheap but I didn't expect it to sound like a little chirpy bird...
This may not have been the best purchase of my life!
Let's check out this 1984 Brown Bag version of the inimitable Hoover Junior U1104.
Special guest appearance by the 1982 Flowery Bag version of the imitable Hoover Junior U1104 lol ;)
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe!
I then did a search of my own YouTube channel for "U2464" AFTER buying this cleaner because I thought I might already own it and had stupidly bought a duplicate.
Turns out I was right and I was also wrong...
Hope you enjoy the video! Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
Please forgive the rambling rant about Electrolux's range in 1975. It's something I've been thinking about since I bought this cleaner. Hoover always gets a bad rap for creating model after model after model, but Electrolux were also guilty of this. To a much lesser extent of course.
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
PS:
If you can name any other Electrolux cylinder cleaners that were around in 1975 then please comment them in the comments below!
God I hate these motors with a passion. They ALWAYS throw up a problem or three.
Hope you enjoy the video, and my frustration. It's almost as bad as the Convertible / Dial-A-Matic XD
Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as I love hearing from you guys
Anyone ever seen this on another Hoover appliance??
I found this wonderful Miele on Ebay and won it for far less money than I had originally thought. Seeing as I've never actually owned one of these cleaners it's certainly one that must be added to the collection.
Let's take it out of the box and see if it works.
Special guest appearance by the Dyson V8!
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out
Does it work? How much paint is it spattered in? Will I regret this purchase?
Watch to find out. And if you can help with my question, please comment below!
In this video we're going to see if the poor old Goblin 105 actually runs and make some plans to start the restoration process.
Who knows how this will turn out!
Thank you to everyone who commented on the last video. Y'all provided some amazing information on this series of machine!
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out :)
We've got machines from:
Hoover
Numatic
Dirt Devil
Goblin
Zanussi
So let's sit down together with a nice cuppa tea and work our way through them.
I've actually got three more in the garage to show you but we'll do those in a separate video.
Hope you enjoyed this overview. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
PS: Whoops - seems I have done a video of the Vortex Bigfoot (it's not a Hurricane at all!)
Visit Sam here:

But did the refurbishment go according to plan?
Watch on and find out...
Hope you've enjoyed this series of videos. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out and I enjoy hearing from you :)
PS: I thought the problem may be to do with the suction change-over valve but sadly not :-/
Thought it was worth doing a separate video on this machine as I've a story or two to tell about it.
So let's take a look at it, see how bad it is and decide what we're going to do with it!
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out :)

As luck would have it I also have a motor from a 1970s PortaPower in my drawers so we can do a comparison between the twin-fan upright unit AND the triple-fan variation used in the Portable / Slimline / PortaPower machines.
It really is a dreadful motor for reasons which I will explain in the video.
Hope you're enjoying this series. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out and I love hearing from you!
I'm rather pleased with how they all turned out and will be listing them for sale very soon. Actually I hope they're all sold by the time this video goes live lol ;)
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out. Thank you all so much!
I have to be honest with you guys - I HATE this job. There's so much that can go wrong, as you'll see with the front panel. If I'd kept pulling it we'd have a ruined machine and a very sad me! Putting it back together is even worse but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
So let's remove the motor from this old girl in readiness for a future video. I'm appalled by the 'repair' I did all those years ago...
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe!
I know I normally focus on vintage vacuum cleaners but this little Tesco Value machine has a story to tell. And seeing as it's not got long left on this earth we may as well hear it! Let's celebrate the unexceptional.
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out :)
Can you imagine what it was like to trot into an electrical retailer in late '63 and to see this Hoover sat there amongst all the soft-bag style uprights? It would have looked incredible, out of this world, 'space age' and exciting!
And VERY expensive.
I've owned this 1100 since 1999 and it's time to give it some much needed love. This task has been put off and put off but I have the time to do it so let's make hay whilst the sun shines. This is going to be one hell of a frustrating series haha!
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out and motivates me to make more videos :)
The Hotpoint's flex rewind unit transplant has been a 90% success and the Sensotronic's motor seems to be OK, so whilst they are both running let's see them in action.
I'm very much looking forward to putting these machines back into the collection and gazing at them lovingly every time I go into the Hoover Room (which is now the Hoover & Hotpoint Room lol)
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out :)
I spent £45 and drove a 35 mile round trip to Neath. The question is - have I wasted my money?
This is a genuine first look - I have not even taken their tops off yet!
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe as it really helps me out :)
Whilst taking it apart to harvest its motor, I realised that the flex rewind unit was incredibly small, and there's a machine in the collection that's been waiting for a donor unit for well over a year now.
In this video, we will look at the final few steps to getting a replacement cable rewind unit into the 1985 Hotpoint Super 3650 upright vacuum cleaner. Will it work?!
What a polava that was. From start to finish the Miele fought me but ultimately I WON - yaay!
In this video we'll take a look at the problems I encountered and try out some different floor tools:
1. Accunova
2. 1980s Turbo nozzle
3. The Awful Allteq
I hope you guys have enjoyed this series and don't hate me toooooo much for the modifications I made to the machine. This was the one that I always wanted to save for myself as I do think it would make the perfect Car Cleaner.

The VAX 101 had a huge service, new filters and a damn good deep scrub.
The Electrolux Turbo2 had a light service, new bag and filters, new belt and a light scrub as it wasn't too dirty.
In this video we will use these two classics for the first time and see how they perform.
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment, like and subscribe as it really helps me out and I appreciate it massively :)
We had a:
Hoover Jovis handheld
Hoover Breeze bagless cylinder
Dyson DC40 upright
Miele C3 Complete Cat & Dog cylinder
And the options were to:
Put in the bin
Harvest for parts
Refurbish and sell
Keep for myself
In this video we will find out what happened to the four machines.
Hope you enjoyed the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe!
So let's take a look at a literal trash-to-treasure Henry and see what we're dealing with.
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
Update: Henry was sold to his new forever-family on Sunday 28th August 2022
In this video I'm going to show you how I managed to bodge a new motor in the Miele and we'll see if it worked.
This is really useful knowledge actually - a replacement motor for one of these cleaners is hideously expensive, but with this trick we can get any old Chinese crappy motor into the machines.
Hope you enjoy the video. We'll see the C3 again in a follow-up video as I've more to tell you about it.
