This transformation of metal happens when the ram pushes the can through the outer Domer tooling to first create the crown, before contacting the second set of tooling to form the dome, all with precision accuracy. Embedded in the Domer tool is a distinct imprint that transfers to the can for quality control purposes. As the ram retracts, the can is removed from the punch using a stripper ring and compressed air inside the ram before heading to the next operation, the Trimmer.

Can Makers should understand Bloom's Taxonomy. Why? Because we are all responsible for training new Can Makers, yet few of us are professional educators.
Blooms Taxonomy describes how we all learn. First we must remember something, and then understand it. Only then can we apply the knowledge, analyze or evaluate something, and eventually solve a problem or create something.
The problem is, so many times we want to skip the first steps and jump right to identifying can defects.
But if we do this on Day 1 of training, we begin to break the trust that is so important in the education process.
Trust is established at the recruiting process, when we trust that we will be trained properly. Then trust is continued with HR, who hands us off to the training class.
If on Day 1 of training we try to teach advanced topics (like Defects) to beginner learners, the trust is broken, and one of two things will happen.
Either the learner will feel stupid, and eventually quit because they feel they don't belong.
Or, perhaps even worse, they will stay, and quietly quite. Taking a paycheck, while abandoning any intention of becoming a better can makers. And this is where bad training leads to increased spoilage and decreased efficiency.
No matter how you look at it - good training matters.

Comparing modern can design to that of a 7oz Coors can from the late 60's / early 70's, there is a lot to notice.
1) Old cans didn't have necks, which meant the can making process didn't use a Necker!
2) Domes on older cans were much more simple, as they relied on thicker metal to resist dome reversal. Modern cans require much more engineering and design as they use thinner metal.
3) This particular can used a UV cure process for the decoration, compared to modern cans that use thermal cure.
4) Can walls of older cans were the same thickness from bottom to top, where modern cans have a distinct transition near the top of the can that allows thicker metal to be used to neck the can, and thinner metal where it is not needed.

It takes an incredible amount of design and engineering to come up with a design this simple. And in it's simplicity lies the beauty. The valve is actuated with a coil that is built into the body. When energized, three tiny stainless steel balls move up and down, allowing air to flow. That's it. It is that simple. And because of this, the valve is rated to last 5 Billion Cycles. And regardless of how the calculations are done, the valve will last years, not months.
Technology Story #2 (Performance). The performance of this valve builds off the simple design, which allows the valve to cycle significantly faster than other alternatives. This fast cycling allows multiple pulses of air to be released during a single stroke of the Bodymaker and Cupper. For the Bodymaker specifically, these pulses act in the same way an impact wrench or air hammer work, allowing it to help strip the can off the punch.
Technology Story #3 (Air Savings). Because the valve is able to cycle so quickly, with multiple pulses per stroke of the Bodymaker or Cupper, the time the valve is not actuated results in air savings. For Cupper this is especially important because most Cuppers turn their strip air always-on once they reach a certain speed. Imagine the air savings from always on, to cycling (only using air when needed).
Technology Story #4 (Sustainability). Air savings is important, but just as important is the electricity savings resulting from not using as much compressed air. If the can manufacturing industry is going to make good on the sustainability promises it is making the world, it needs technologies like this.
